Description

UNITED STATES PATENT @TWICE JONATHAN KNOWLES, OF COHOES, NIL7 YORK.
LOOM.
Specification of Letters Patent No.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JONATHAN KNowL-ns, of Cohoes, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented a new and useful mprovement in Looms, of which the :following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which make part of this specitication, and in which- Figure l represents an end elevation of the frame lay and let ott mechanism of a common power loom with my improvements applied thereto; Fig. 2, a top view of the tension roller and its guides; and lFig. 3 a back View of the same.
My invention and improvement relates to the mechanism for unwinding or letting yarn oit' the warp beam is required by the progress of the weaving, and it consists ih arranging what is termed the tension or whip-roll, which is hung in the usual manner upon the arms of a vibrating lever, to roll up and down inclined guides in its vibrations to accommodate itself to the length of the yarn unwound from the warp-roll. This tension-roll moves forward toward the breast beam as the warp is taken up by the weaving, until it arrives at a position where it puts into action the mechanism for turning the warp beam to l-et oli' warp. As the warp is let ol, the roll is forced back again by the action of a weight to take up the slack and maintain the tension of the warp, the roll is thus kept constantly oscillating forward and back and the weight which produces the tension so kept rising and falling, and as a very moderate degree ot' tension upon each one of the numerous warps, would in the aggregate counterbalance a heavy 10,209, dated November 8, 1853.
weight, the constant rising and falling of ,o
this weight would produce a series of surges and strains, highly objectionable and prejudicial. lith a view to produce the requisite tension upon the warps with a light weight and without adding to the complexity of the moving parts or' the loom I have applied an incline guide (a) to the inside of each of the standards between which the whip roll plays, for the journals of the roll to rise on they are carried toward the breast beam. These inclined guides turn on pivots (c) and are adjustable by means of set-screws (d) that pass through slots in the standards to various degrees of inclination to alterI the strain upon the warps as may be required, as the strain increases, in the saine ratio that the inclination oit' the guides increase and vice versa; therefore, instead of employing a heavy weight to strain the warp tightly, it is merely necessary to increase the inclination of the guides.
I have not given a particular description ot' any of the parts of the loom except the inclined guides which l have added, as the other parts are all well known and in common use.
ldlhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isw
The combination or' inclined guides with the whip roll for the purpose of graduating the tension of the warps substantially as herein set forth.
ln testimony whereof l have hereunto subscribed my name.
J. KNOVLES. lVitnesses CLEM, S. STULL, P. H. lVATsoN.
