NUT-ROTATING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed April 21, 1911. Serial No. 622,553.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM CORLIS GASWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Wellsville, in the county of Golumbiana and State of Ohio, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Rotating Devices, of which the following is a specification, reference being had herein to the accompanying drawmg.
This invention relates to a nut rotating device, and the primary object of the invention is to provide a device that can be advantageously used in the maintenance of railway tracks for screwing and unscrewing nuts upon the bolts of rail joints and rail fasteners.
vAnother object of the invention is to provide a device of the above type that can be easily and quickly placed in position and operated to place or remove a nut relatively to a bolt.
A further object of the invention is to utilize a train of gears for revolving a spanner wrench.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that the structural elements thereof are susceptible to such changes as fall within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawing :-Figure 1 is a vertical cross sectional view of the device, Fig. 2 is a plan of a hand lever adapted to form part of the device, Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of the device, and Fig. 4: is a front elevation of the same.
A device in accordance with this invention comprises a base plate 1 and detachably connected to said base plate by bolts 2 or other fastening means are the lower edges of a casing, comprising sections 3 forming a lower compartment 4 and an upper compartment 5.
Arranged transversely of the compartment 4: is a double spanner wrench 6 having threaded portions 7 adjustably held in the sections 3 of the casing, said wrench having the outer ends thereof provided with spanner heads 8 that can be mounted upon square, hexagon or octagon shaped nuts.
Fixed upon the wrench 6 intermediate of the threaded portions 7 thereof is a relatively wide gear wheel 9 and meshing therewith are gear wheels 10 loosely mounted shafts 11 supported by the confronting walls of the sections 3. Meshing with the gear wheels 10 is a large gear wheel 12 mounted upon a shaft 13 journaled in the sections 3, the large gear wheel 12 occupying the compartment 5 of the casing. The shaft 13 is provided with a crank or handle 14 whereby the large gear wheel 12 can be revolved to impart a rotary movement to the wrench 6 through the medium of the gear wheels 10 and the elongated gear wheel 9.
One face of the gear wheel 12 is provided with radially disposed teeth 15, and adapted to engage these teeth is the tooth 16 of a hand lever 17, said lever having one end thereof provided with a spanner head 18 and the opposite end with a semieylindrieal head 19 adapted to engage the shaft 13. One of the sections 3 of the casing is slotted, as at 20 whereby the lever 17 can be placed in the casing to engage the shaft 13.
To assist in holding the casing relatively to a rail 21, the head of the rail is provided with an adjustable clamp, comprising sections 22 and 23 adjustably held together through the medium of a bolt 24 and a winged thumb nut 25, said bolt being carried by the section 23 and extending up wardly through a slot in the section 22. The section 23 has the outer end thereof bent downwardly. as at 26 to engage the head 27 of a bolt 28, said bolt together with a nut 29 being employed to retain splice bars 30 in engagement with the rail 21. The end of the section 22 is provided with a socket 31 and engaging in said socket is the outer end of a coiled spring 32 having the opposite end thereof loosely connected, as at 33 to one of the sections 3, said section having a book 34 to hold the outer end of the spring when it is not in use. The other section of the casing is equipped with a similar spring. The top of each of the sections 3 is provided with a hook 35 and adapted to engage these hooks is the upper end of a strap 36 having the lower end thereof provided with a foot piece 37, whereby the operator of the device can place his foot upon the piece 37 and steady the device while it is in operation.
After one end of the wrench 6 has been placed in engagement with the nut 29, the
clamp is placed upon the rail 21 and the crank or handle 14- rotated whereby the wrench 6 will be rotated to screw the nut 29 upon the bolt 28. After the nut has been tightened by rotating the shaft 13, the lever 17 can be placed in engagement with the shaft 13 and the large gear wheel 12, whereby said wheel can be further rotated due to the leverage obtained by using the leverl'T. hen it is desired to remove the nut 29, the machine is reversed or the shaft 13 can be rotated in the opposite direction.
The device in its entirety can be made of strong and durable metal and of various sizes, and besides being utilized in the maintenance of tracks, it can be used in the construction of steel cars, bridges and other structures where a large number of bolts and nuts are used.
What I claim is I. A device for rotating nuts comprising a casing having its lower portion formed with openings with the walls thereof threaded, a threaded wrench extending through said openings and having its threads engaging with the threads of said wall, a: relatively wide gear wheel fixed to said wrench and adapted when rotated to longi tudinally shift the'wrench, a pair of gear wheels arranged above said relatively wide gear wheel and journaled in said casing and adapted when operated to revolve said relativ ely wide gear wheel and rotate said wrench during the longitudinal movement thereof, and means journaled in said casing and engaging with said pair of gears for revolving them.
2. A device for rotating nuts comprising a support adapted to be positioned to have either side oppose the nut to be rotated, a wrench having its shank mounted in and projecting from each side of said support andhaving each of its projecting ends provided with a nut engaging means, means carried by said support for rotating and longitudinally shifting said wrench in either direction, and means for detachably connecting either side of said support in position to oppose the nut in whichever direction the wrench is shifted.
3. A device for rotating nuts comprising a support adapted to be positioned to have either side oppose the nut to be rotated a wrench having its shank mounted in and projecting from each sideof said support and having each of its projecting ends provided with a nut engaging means, means carried by said support for rotating and iongitudinally shifting said wrench in either direction, and resilient means carried by each side of said support for detachably connecting either side thereof in position to oppose the nut depending in whichever direction the wrench is shifted.
