KNUCKLE-PIN RETAINER.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH KELso, a citi- Zen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knuckle-Pin Retainers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to the construction of car couplers of the vertical plane type and more particularly to devices for preventing the knuckle pin from working out of the knuckle pin holes of the coupler head or from dropping out in the event the pin should be broken while the coupler is in service, thus maintaining the integrity of the pivotal connection of the knuckle with the coupler head.

To this end my invention, generally stated, consists in forming the lower end of the knuckle pin with a transversely extending aperture which is adapted to receive a key or cotter pin that is provided with an eye or opening, and in providing the under face of the coupler head adjacent to the knuckle pin opening therein with a perforated lug that is likewise adapted to receive a headed key or cotter, a key or cotter having an eye or perforation being passed through the aperture in the lower end of the knuckle pin and a headed key or cotter being passed through the eye of the knuckle pin key and through the perforation in the lug on the under side of the coupler head.

In the drawings chosen for the purpose of illustrating my invention, the scope whereof is pointed out in the claim, Figure l is a side elevation of a portion of a car coupler provided with a knuckle pin retaining device embodying my invention; and Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the devices shown in Fig. 1, the knuckle of the coupler being omitted.

I will now proceed to describe my invention more fully, so that others skilled in the art to which it appertains may apply the same.

the knuckle and 3 the knuckle pin by which the knuckle is pivotally mounted on the coupler head in the well known manner.

Formed on the under face of the coupler head adjacent to the knuckle pin opening 1a therein is a downwardly extending perforated lug lb which is adapted to receive the cotter or headed pin t by which the transversely extending key or cotter 5 is secured to the coupler head.

The portion of the knuckle pin 3 which projects downwardly outside the coupler head 1 is provided with a transversely extending perforation or aperture through which a key 5 extends, this key being, as shown, preferably a simple cotter formed with an eye or perforation in its head 5a. The headed pin 4, which is also preferably a cotter, passes through the eye in the end 5a of the key 5 and also through the perforation in the supporting lug lb on the under side of the coupler head, thus securely attaching the knuckle pin to the coupler head.

It will be noted that the embodiment of my invention heretofore described affords an extremely cheap and simple means not only for preventing the knuckle pin 3 from dropping in the event it should be broken, but also for preventing the pin from jarring or moving upwardly when the coupler is in service.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

In a knuckle pin retainer for car couplers, the combination wit-h the coupler head, knuckle and knuckle pin, said head being provided on its under face with a perforated lug and said knuckle pin being provided with a transversely extending aperture in its lower end, of a longitudinally split key formed with an eye and extending into the aperture of the knuckle pin, and a longitudinally split headed pin extending through the eye in said key and through the perforation in the said lug on the under face of the coupler head.
