SPRAY.
To all lwhom t may concern.
Be it known that I, EARL C. WARWICK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sprays, of which the following is a specification reference being had to the accompanying rawings.
My invention relates to new and Auseful improvements in stands and sprays therefor and the primary object is to provide an improved means for spraying the articles carried on a stand in order to keep the same in a fresh condition.
A further object resides in providing an improved form of spray provided with means for the draining of the water therefrom.
A still further object resides in rov-iding a defleetor for :the spray disposed in such position as to cause the water to return to the drain.
With these and numerous other objects in View, my invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in 4the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part .of this application, Figure 1 is yan enlarged section through the spraying device. Fig. -2 yis a detail perspectivel of the funnel member and deiector, Fig. 3 is an inverted perspective of the top or screw pla-te and Fig. 4 is a reduced side elevation -of a stand showing my improved spray applied to use thereon.
In carrying out ,my invention, I shall refer to It-he drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which 1 indicates a metallic stand comprising a base 2 mounted upon the supporting legs 3 and a back plate 4. Extending from the back plate 4 toward the forward portion of lthe base 2 inclined at an angle downwardly, are the trays 5 which are made of wire mesh or any other similar material desired, said trays being adapted 'to receive -thereon vegetables and the like, and the outer ends thereof are bent upwardly at an angle to prevent the contents of said trays from rolling therefrom.

whereby the stand containing eatables may be placed in the open air and will not be unsanitary, so far as'flies and other insects are concerned. The sides 8 of the stand may be made of metal or glass, the latter preferably, and hingedly secured to said back plate 4 is an additional cover 9, made preferably of glass, whereby all insects or other extraneous matter will be prevented from injuring eatables carried on the stand.
The base 2 of the stand is adapted lto be made hollow so that ice may :be carried therein .during the warmer yperiods of the year to 'retain the vegetables or other eatables in a fresh condition, and a waste water tank 10 is provided below the .base with a cock 11 therein, whereby the water may be drained therefrom.
Extending through the base 2 ofthe stand adjacent theback plate 4 thereof to a point above the trays 5, are any number .of water pipes 12, I having shown but `two in the drawings, Said pipes being connected to the main or any other pipe leading thereto.
The upper ends of said pipes l2 are provided with the hollow circular :heads 13, said heads being reduced in size rand ex ternally screw-threaded, as shown at 14. Mounted in each of the heads 13 is a brass gauze 4wire 15, and a screw or top plate LG of a diameter substantially .equal to that .of the head 13, is adapted to be threaded into engagement with t-he threaded portion of said head, said screw la-te Ibeing provided with a restricted opening 17 therein which is disposed so as to lbe positioned in alinement with lthe l pipe 12 when said .plate is mounted on the head.
A funnel-shaped member 18 terminating in a pipe or the Ilike 19 has an open-ing 20 in the lower portion thereof adjacent its point of termination, through which the pipe 12 extends, and the upper or flared portion rof said funnel member 18 has mounted therein or formed thereon asubstantially basin-shaped member 21. This basin 21 has the bottom thereof completely .perforated and is also provided 4with an opening 22, through which the upper portion of said pipe 12 extends, said basin being so disposed as to substantially receive the head 13 and the plate 1li therein.
Carried by the basin member 21 is a deflector or the like 23, the outer and effect-ive portion of which is disposed over and some distance above the opening 17 in the plate 1G,

so that the water which is sprayed through said opening from the pipe will be deflected so as to cause a very fine spray or mist. The detlector 23, however, is so curved that the water which is not sprayed therefrom, will lpass downwardly to the basin 21 where it be kept constantly in a fresh condition, in
view of the fine mist or spray which will occur from the water striking the defleotor.
It will be understood that valves will be provided in the pipes 12 so that the water passing therethrough may be controlled, and in order to provide water which is thoroughly cooled, I desire to extend the pipe 12 through the hollow base 2 of the stand, or have said pipe connected with an additional pipe which extends through said base, and that portion of the pipe extending therethrough may be coiled, as shown at 2a in Fig. 1 of the drawings. rllhis hollow base may be provided with ice, so that it will be seen that water passing through the coil pipe 24 to the pipe 12 will be thoroughly cooled and the contents of the stand will be not only sprayed with a cooled water or mist. `but also kept in a cool fresh condition from the cooled base of said stand.
It is a well known fact that vegetable and fruit dealers have difficulty displaying their eatables, particularly in warmer periods of the year, in view of thefact that the heat dries the same, and further, in view of the unsanitary conditions which occur when displaying the same in the open air. With such a device as I have invented, however, all sucheatables, whether 'readily perishable or not, may be displayed and at the same time kept in a fresh and sanitary condition. Furthermore, when the spray is in operation, the
contents ofthe trays of the stand will be kept thoroughly watered and the misty, Water dripping condition of the stand will doubtless attract considerable attention.
It will still further be seen that in view of the curvature of the deflector, that amount of water which is not sprayed outwardly over the contents of the trays, will be passed down to the basin-like member to be drained away. In this manner, the stand, although receiving a spray or mist constantly, will never -be in a thoroughly wet condition.
Furthermore, it will be seen that it is not necessary to have these sprays constantly in operat-ion, so that when desired, the ow of water may be stopped, the glass cover removed and the mesh covering allowed to rey main, and thereby the contents of the stand may be easily viewed by passersby and at the same time be free from ies and other germ-carrying insects. r
Furthermore, it will be seen that this device is of such simple construction as to be cheaply manufactured andone which will be extremely eective in operation.
Although I such, it will be understood that this stand is to be made portable so that the same may be readily taken down and set aside when not in use and made compact for shipping.
What I claim is 1,. In a device of the character described, the combination with a water pipe, a hollow head formed on the upper end thereof and a top plate removably engaged with said head and provided therein with a central restricted opening; of a funnel designed member through which said pipe extends terminating at its lower end in a drain pipe, the
upper or flared portion of said funnel mem ber being provided with a perforated lbasin encircling said head, and a deflector carriedr by said basin having a portion thereof disposed over the restricted opening in said plate.
2. In a device of the clas's described, thel vcombination with a water pipe, a hollow head formed at the upper end thereof, said head having a shoulder and an externally threaded portion thereon, and a topplate provided with a shoulder and an internally threaded port-ion engaged with the threaded portion of said head, said plate being also provided with a restricted central opening; of a funnel-shaped member surrounding said head and plate, said funnel member terminating in a' drain pipe and provided with an opening immediately adjacent said drain pipe, a perforated basin memberv mounted in said funnel member and rovided with a central opening through w ichy said water pipe extends, and a deflector carried by the funnel member and disposed above the opening in said top plate, said water pipe being also disposed through the opening in said funnel member, whereby the latter may be moved longitudinally of the water pipe when desired.
