Description

E. J. SCHOWALTER.
CLOTHES BOILER ATTACHMENT." APPLICATION FILED 11111.7, 1911.

EDWARD J. SCHOWALTER, OF RACINE, WISCONSIN.
CLOTHES-BOILER ATTACHMENT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD J. SorrowAL'rEn, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Racine, in the county of Racine and State of WVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Boiler Attachments; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention consists in what is herein particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims of this specification, its object being to provide simple, economical fountain attachments for domestic wash-boilers by which to induce a circulation of hot water through the clothes treated in'such boilers, the construction of the improved attachments being such as to cover a large area of heating surface and to facilitate the circulation of boiling water under steam pressure generated within their confines, provision being had for intermittent trapping of the water in said attachments.
Figure 1 of the drawings representsaplan view of one of my wash-boiler attachments inverted; Fig. 2, a partly sectional view of the device on the plane indicated by line 22 in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3, a cross-section of said device on line 8-3 in said Fig. 1.
Referring by numerals to the drawings, 4 indicates the wall, 5 the partly inclined top, and 6 the preferably tapered rear upper outlet nozzle of the shell portion of a washboiler attachment in accordance with my invention, and fitting the nozzle is an also preferably tapered vertically disposed pipe 7 'having the upper discharge-end thereof horizontall or approximately so. The shell is preferably widened intermediate of its ends to increase its area over a heater particularly a gas-stove burner, said shell, in any construction thereof, being somewhat triangular and narrowest at its forward end. The top of the shell slopes downward forward of the nozzle 6 that is at the greatest elevation of said top and thus the area in said shell is gradually decreased in the same direction to facilitate the generation of steam necessary to effect a circulation of hot water in the wash-boiler containing the herein described attachment, a fragment 8 of such a boiler being shown in Figs. 2 and 3.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 7, 1911.
Patented Mar. 19, 1912.
Serial No. 612,877.
The ends of the walls of the shell are lapped to provide a passage in which a gravity gate 9 is hung to close against stops 10, the opening swing of the gate being inward.
Forward of the nozzle 6, the inner face of the top of the shell is provided with a central longitudinal rib 11 and divergent ribs 12 by which to trap water in said shell and facilitate its flow, under steam-pressure, to the shell-outlet from which it ascends and escapes through the distributing-pipe 7 there being a convergence of the spaces between ribs toward said shell outlet with which they communicate. The ribs are of a depth less than the wall 4 of the shell, so as not to interfere with a circulation of Water in said shell, and the lower edges of said ribs are on the same plane above the bottom of the wash-boiler aforesaid.
In practice, steam is quickly generated within the confines of the shell at the shallow forward end of the same to force hot water up the nozzle 6 and pipe 7, and the partial vacuum thus created causes the gate 9 to swing inward, whereby said shell is again recharged with hot water from the boiler and said gate automatically returned to normal position. The interval between operations similar to that above described is variable in proportion to the temperature of the water in the boiler, and said water being at a boiling temperature, its circulation through the attachment is practically continuous, it being understood'that the clothes to be boiled are laid in upon said attachment below the discharge-end of the pipe? thereof.
The aforesaid wash boiler attachment may be removable, as herein shown or in permanent connection with the bottom of said boiler as may be found preferable in practice to meet the demands of the trade.
I claim:
A clothes-boiler fountain attachment comprising an approximately triangular shell narrowest at its forward end and having a sloping top descending toward the end aforesaid, the top being provided at its greatest elevation with a central upwardly extending outlet and the ends of the shellwall lapped at the rear to provide a passage; stops in the passage, a gravity gate hung in said passage to close outwardly against the stops under pressure within said shell, and
ribs depending from the shell top in such discounty of Racine and State of Wisconsin in position that the intervening spaces are conthe presence of tWo Witnesses.
ver e-ht toWard said outlet With which they coni municate, the depth of the ribs being less EDWARD SGHOWALTER' than that of said Wall. I Witnesses:
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I JEROME A. GROULIK, have hereunto set my hand at Racine in the AUGUST GROULIK.
