WILLIAM G. ANDERTON AND CLAUDE S. JARVIS, 0F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
LICENSE-TAG FOR MOTOR-VEHICLES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 19, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, VVILLIAM G. ANDER- TON and CLAUDE S. JARVIS, citizens of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of 1. hiladelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in License-'llags for Motor-Vehicles, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to improvements in license tags for motor vehicles, the object of the invention being to provide a license tag composed of a single blank of sheet metal bent in a particular manner, whereby the tag proper and the lamp supporting journal are formed from the same blank, are therefore integral, and have a rigid relationship with each other so that there can be no movement of the tag relative to the lamp.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which can be manufactured and sold atan extremely low price, and which will be strong and durable in use.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed outin the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a plan view of the blank from which the device is made. Fig. 2, is a view in front elevation of the completed device, and Fig. 3, is an upper edge view of Fig. 2.
In Fig. 1, the blank is illustrated from which the tag is made, and the blank is shaped to form the tag proper 1 and arm 2, and the journal portion The blank is bent upon the line 4, so that the arm 2 projects at right angles to the tag proper 1, and the portion 3 is bent into substantially cylindri cal form to provide an integral lamp receiving journal at the free end of arm 2, so that the lamp will throw its light onto the tag to illuminate the printing matter on the latter. The blank is provided with two openings 5 to receive screws 6 which clamp a strap 7 to the tag by means of nuts 8, and this strap 7 is adapted to be positioned around the bracket on the vehicle.
A slot 9 is provided in the tag, so that tags of other States may be readily secured thereto.
Various slight changes might be made inv the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from our invention, and hence we do not limit ourselves to the precise details set forth, but consider ourselves at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1.. In an article of the class described, a strip of material bent to form a long and a short side having rigid relation with each other, the long side constituting a license tag, and the short side bearing a lamp supporting journal integral therewith, there being a slot adjacent the upper edge of said long side to receive securing means for attaching other tags, and means for support .ing the said device on a vehicle, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the class described, a strip of sheet material, bent to form a long and a short side having rigid relation with each other, the long side constituting a license tag, said short arm being reduced in height for the greater part of its length and tcrn'linating in an end of greater height, said end constituting an integral lamp supporting journal, there being a slot extending longiti'u'linally of the long side adjacent its upper edge, whereby other tags may be' secured to the upper edge of the long side and dropped in front of the same, and means for supporting the device on a vehicle, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
IVILLTAM Gr. ANDERTON. CLAUDE S. JARVIS.
