Specification of Letters Patent. 1
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, (1) JOSEPH HAJDt'I and (2) STEPHEN NEMETH, subjects of the King of Hungary, residing at (1) Price dale and (2) Grindstone, in the counties of (1) l/Vestmoreland and (2) Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Ties and Joints, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to metallic tie and joint and one of the objects thereof is to provide a metallic tie in a manner as hereinafter set forth for not only supporting the rails but also for coupling the rails of the track together to prevent lateral displacement of the rails with respect to the track bed.
A further object of the present invention is to provide means in a manner as hereinafter set forth for coupling the opposing ends of a pair of track rails together to pre vent longitudinal shifting of the rails with respect to the track bed and to further allow for the necessary contraction and expansion of the track rails when occasion so requires.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a metallic tie and joint which will be comparatively simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, efficient in its use, readily set up in operative position and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In describing the invention in detail, ref erence is had to the accompanying drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pair of rails showing the adaptation thereto of a means in accordance with this invention for coupling the opposing ends of the rails together.- Fig. 2 is a plan of a track broken away showing the adaptation thereto of a rail joint and tie in accordance with this invention. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view through one of the ties. Fig. 4 is a section on line X--X of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a section on line W-WV, Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the tie sections. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of one of the rail fasteners forming an element of the tie. Figs. 8 and 9 are perspective views illus' trating the wedges for coupling the sections of a tie together, and, Figs. 10 and 11 are perspective views upon a large scale of the wedges forming elements of the joint.
Referring to the drawings by reference characters, 1, 2, 3 and 1 denote the rails of a track, one end of the rail 2 opposing the rail 1 and a like arrangement is had in connection with the rails 3 and 1. The web 5 of each of the rails in proximity to one end thereof is provided with an opening 6 through which extends the shank 7 of a hollow restangular coupling member 8 which is arranged at the inner face of the web 5. The shank 7 at its outer end is formed with a head 9 whereby the web 5 is positioned between the head 9 and coupling member 8. The coupling member 8 of one rail is arranged in alinement with the coupling member 8 of an adjacent rail and extending through the coupling member of one rail as well as the coupling member of an adjacent rail is a connecting bar 10 having each of its ends capable of being bent at an angle as at 11, 12, whereby the bar 10 is connected to the members 8. The inner face of the bar 10 is inclined so that it is adapted to be engaged by a wedge 13 which when driven home will fixedly secure the bar 10 in position and by such an arrangement the opposing ends of a pair of rails will be coupled together. To further provide means for coupling the opposing ends of a pair of rails, each of the rails has depending from its base near its end a pair of yokes 1 1, the yokes of one rail alining with the yokes of the other rail and extending through the yokes is a connecting bar 15 and a wedge 16 which perform the same function and are similar in construction to the connecting bar 10 and wedge 13.

her 19 in position and means for connecting the sections 17 and 18 together. Each of the sections 17 and 18 consists of a flat plate 21. The inner end of the section 18 is provided with a fork 22, having each of its arms formed with a longitudinally-extending opening 23. The inner end of the section 17 is provided with a longitudinallyextending opening which alines with the openings 23 of the arms of the fork. The inner end of the section 17 extends between the arms of the fork so that the opening in said inner end will register with the openings in the arms of the fork and extending through said registering openings are the wedges 24, 25. Each of the sections 17, 18 is provided with a shoulder 26, due to the fact that the outer portion of the plate is of less thickness than the inner portion. Each of the sections 17 and 18 is provided near its outer end with an upwardly and inwardly extending clamp 28 positioned at a point removed from the outer end edge of the section whereby a flange 29 is provided. VVhe-n the sections 17 and 18 are coupled together and the tie supporting a pair of rails, the clamps 28 extend over the outer sides of the bases of the rails whereby the rails are prevented from shifting outwardly with respect to the ties. Each of the rail fasteners 20 consists of a rectangular body having one end upturned as at 30 and which extends upon the inner side of the base of the rail and cooperates with a clamp 28 for maintaining the rail in position. The bodyportion of the rail fastener abuts against the shoulder 26 and is secured to the bodyportion of the section 17 or 18 as the case may be by hold-fast devices extending through the openings 31 and through the openings 32 in the section 17 or 18. The retaining member 19 is mounted upon the thickened inner portions of the sect- ions 17, 18 and the rail fasteners 20 and is clamped in position by the bands 33 and malleable wedges 34, 35 which extend through the bands which engage the sections 17 and 18 of the tie. The ends of the wedges 34, 35 are bent at right angles toprevent them from slipping through the bands. The bands 33 and wedges 34 and 35 constitute the coupling devices hereinbefore referred to.
What we claim is: p
1. In combination, a tie consisting of a pair of sections, each having its outer end provided with an inwardly and upwardly disposed clamp for engagement with the outer side of the base of a rail section, one
the arms of the fork of the last mentioned of said sections having its inner end providedwith a fork of greater thickness than the remaining portion of the section there by providing a transversely extending shoulder, the inner end of the other section extending between the arms of the fork of the first mentioned section and provided with a slot, the arms of the fork provided with longitudinally extending slots, alining with said first mentioned slot, oppositely disposed wedges extending through said slots for coupling the sections together, rail fasteners mounted upon the said sections and abutting against said shoulders and further having ends upturned and engaging the inner sides of the base of the rail sections and associated with said clamps, whereby the rails are maintained in posi tion, and means for connecting the rail fasteners to said sections.
2. In combination, a tie consisting of a pair of sections, each having its outer end provided with an inwardly and upwardly disposed clamp for engagement with the outer side of the base ofarail section, one of said sections having its inner end provided with a fork of greater thickness than the remaining portion of the section thereby providing a transversely extending shoulder, the inner end of the other section extending between section and provided with a slot, the arms of the fork provided with longitudinally extending slots, alining with said first mentioned slot, oppositely disposed wedges eX- tending through said slots for coupling the sections together, rail fasteners mounted upon the said sections and abutting against said shoulders and further having the outer ends upturned and engaging the inner sides of the base of the rail sections and associated with said clamps, whereby the rails are maintained in position, means for connecting the rail fasteners to said sections, a retaining member seated upon said forks extending upon said rail fasteners, bands surrounding said member, fasteners and sections, and wedges for clamping the band in position, said last mentioned wedges having angular ends.
