As shown in Fig. 1 the chains 36 and 36 are made loose enough so that the angle pieces 44 may bear against the exterior of the cage 13 as they pass from the shaft 30 at the bottom and one side of the top piece 18 to the shaft 32 on oppositeside of the easdn order that the tension of the chains may be adjusted I provide suitable adjustable brackets for shaft 32 being comprised of bearings 42 attached to adjustable side pieces 45, having slots 46 engaged with bolts 47, projecting from the casing 19. Itis obvious that the bracket 45 maybeshifted with the shaft 32 and the bolts 47 clamped to hold the same in a position to retain the chains 36, 36 in a taut condition. The shaft 30 is connected with the shaft 20 by means of a belt drive 48.
The detector bar or piece 11 consists of a body portion having a lip shaped to fit the end 10 of the cast piece 8. On the o posits side from this lip or projection are lips 50 formed very thin to be easily broken. Such lips are shown in Fig. 2

If a drill point or metal piece of any de -BL scription is accidentally fed to the machine it will drop into the opening 9 and will a strike against the detector 11 and break the I lugs or lips 50. This will cause the plate 11 to fall in the space 9, being drawn by the weighted chain, permitting the weight to drop, which instantly calls the attention of the attendant to the presence ofioreign material in the cage. A door 56 is provided in the casing 17 opposite the openings 9 so that the broken detector bar 11 and the foreign substance may be removedarild a new detector bar placed in position.
I am aware that minor changes may be made in the construction, arrangement and combination of the various parts of my device without departing from the spirit of my invention the scope 0 which is indicated in the accompanying claims.

7 In a device of the character described, in combination, a cage, rotatable hammers, a breakable detector bar mounted in the cage and means for normally holding said de tector bar in position said means comprising a weighted element.
8. In adevice of the character described, in combination, a cage provlded with perforated and imperforated grinding surfaces,
said surfaces being disconnected, a cast piece forming a recess between said grmdmg surfaces, and a detector bar normally held in position on said cast piece. p

In a device'of the character described, in combination, a cage, rotatable arms mounted within the cage, a detector bar having a breakable portion normally held in position in. an opening in the wall of the cage, means for holding said detector bar in and a head portion slotted to en position, comprising a weighted arm, and a chain connecting said weighted arm with the detector bar.
