To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osnrn 1V. Kinney, a citizen of the United States, residing at Goldcreek, in the county of Powell and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Disk Hal-rows, of which the following is a specification.
The invention pertains particularly to novel means for relative adjustment of the gangs of disks to most effectively perform their cutting action.
A further object of the invention is the means whereby the disk sections may be simultaneously adjusted, or if desired the cor responding disk sections of the gangs may be operated independently of the other sections.
Another object is to provide means for regulating the depth of cut of the disks which means may also be employed for steering purposes and also to counteract any side draft which is not counterbalanced by the adjustment of the separate gangs.
For a full understanding of the present invention, reference is to be had to the following description and to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a machine embodying the invention, the main operating lever being broken away; Fig. 2 is a front elevation bringing out clearly the mounting of the controlling wheel; Fig. 3 is a top plan view, and Fig. 4 is a section on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3, and showing more clearly the cooperation of the main and auxiliary operating levers, the former being broken away.
Throughout the following. detail description and on the several figures and drawings, similar parts are referred to by like reference characters.
Referring to the drawings the device comprising this invention consists of a frame having a longitudinal beam 1 on which are mounted approximately at the central and rear portions thereof the transverse supporting beams 2. Pivotally mounted on the transverse beams 2 on each side of the beam 1 are the supporting frames 3, said frames having depending therefrom the supporting arms 4 having bearings at their lower extremities for mounting of the axles 5. A plurality of disks 6 are mounted on the axles of each of the frames 3, said disks being shown as of the usual concave-convex form.
Between the front and rear transverse beams is located the depending arm 7 in which is mounted the main operating lever 8, by means of the stub shaft 9, said stub shaft being keyed to the operating lever 8 as clearly shown. in Fig. 4. At the lower extremity of the operating lever 8 is pivoted the link 10 which is connected at its opposite end to the inner end of the axle 5 of one of the front disk sections. At a suitable distance above the stub shaft 9 is pivoted the link 11 which is secured to the inner end of the axle 5 of one of the rear sections of the disks. The main operating lever 8 thus described is preferably located on the right side of the beam 1 and is adapted to be adj usted in different positions by engaging with the notched segment 12 secured to the beam 1. On the opposite side of the beam 1 is located the auxiliary operating lever 13 which is loosely mounted on the stub shaft 9 and has at its lower extremity a link 14 connecting at its other end to the inner extremity of the axle 5 of the other front disk section. Similarly to the link 11 there is also secured on the auxiliary lever 13, the link 15 which is connected at its other end to the inner extren'lity of the axle of the other rear disk section. As will be seen in Fig. 4, the auxiliary lever 13 normally engages with the key which connects the lever S to the stub shaft 9, but may be moved longitudinally of said shaft in order to disengage the same from the key and permit of independent adjustment of the front and rear disks on the corresponding side of the machine, said adjustment being secured by engagement of the lever 13 with the notched segment 16.
At a suitable position in the front extremity of the beam 1 is pivotally mounted the controlling wheel 17 said wheel being mounted in the U-shaped member 18 extending at an angle to the post 19. At the upper end of the post 19 is located the arm 20 extending laterally therefrom and having pivotally secured at its outer extremity the link 21. which in turn is pivoted to the operating lever 22, said operating lever being held adjusted by means of engagement with the notched segment 23.
To permit of adjustment of the controlling wheel 17 to raise and lower the harrow, and thereby regulate the depth of cut of the disks, there is provided a lever 24 which is pivotally secured intermediate its ends to the post 19 above the beam 1, and pivotally mounted on said beam 1 at its lower end forward of the post 19. The proper depth may be regulated by raising or lowering the lever 24 and permitting it to engage in the segment 25 at the desired adjustment.
At the front extremity of the beam 1 may be provided a swivel 26 to which the draft means may be attached.
At a suitable point between the front and rear transverse beams 2 is secured the standard 27 on which is mounted the seat 28, and it will be apparent that all of the operating levers will be within easy reach of the operator with the exception of the lever 24.
It will be noted from Fig. 3 of the drawings that the disks of the sections comprising the front gang of the harrow are mounted so as to throw the soil being operated upon toward the right in a manner similar to the operation of the ordinary plow. Thus in passing over plowed ground any soil which is not completely turned over will be thrown down fiat by the action of the front disks thereon. The disks in the sections comprising the rear gang are oppositely mounted to those of the front gang and perform the usual cutting action of the soil as will be readily apparent. The mounting of the disks as above described is very advantageous having in view the fact that there is no strip of soil left untouched between sections comprising gangs of the harrow or on the lap made in the next round ofthe machine. To adjust the gangs at a proper angle it is only necessary to move the lever 8 forward a desired distance, said lever by virtue of the connection between the main lever and the auxiliary lever 13 operating the position of the front disk sec tions so as to throw the soil toward the right and simultaneously pulling the disk sections of the rear gang into a position at an opposite angle to that of the front disks.
Under certain conditions it may be desirable to adjust the disks of one side of the harrow at a greater angle than those of the disks on the opposite side, to accomplish which it is only necessary to press the auxiliary lever 13 outwardly, disengaging said lever from the key on the stub shaft 9 and thereby permitting independent adjustment of said lever. The disk sections on either side may thus be adjusted as desired.
To provide means for regulating the depth of cutting action of the disks under ordinary conditions the operator raises or lowers the lever 24: which would tend to prevent one side of the harrow from cutting deeper than the other, if adjusted at a greater angle than the other sections. This adjustment of. the wheel 18 will remove nearly all of the side draft from the harrow. The wheel 17 also allows for steering the harrow as will readily be apparent.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
In a disk harrow, the combination of a frame, front and rear gangs comprising disk sections pivotally mounted on the frame, a main operating lever, a stub shaft pivotally mounted on the frame, a key connecting said lever to the stub shaft, links connecting said lever with one of the front and rear disk sections, an auxiliary operating lever loosely mounted on the stub shaft movable into and out of engagement with the key aforesaid, and links connecting the auxiliary lever with the other of said front and rear disk sections.
