Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 26, 1911. Serial No. 623,354.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR H. BELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brooders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in brooders, and the object is to provide means for supporting a heating receptacle within the brooder, and a further object is the provision of means for protecting the chicks from coming .in contact with the heating medium.
The invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the brooder; Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional, view; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the disk or collar; and Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view, showing the manner of supporting the screen upon the disk or collar.
A, represents the brooder, which is provided with a runway 1 at one end. A door 2 is connected to the brooder, whereby the chicks can pass from the brooder into the runway. A curtain 3 is mounted upon a roller 4, which is supported upon the frame of the runway 1, whereby the top of the runway 1 can he closed when desired. A collar or disk 5 is received within the brooder, and is provided with an outer annular flange 6, which is provided with slots or perforations 7 at predetermined intervalsthrough which the bars 8 extend. A hook 9 is formed at one end of each bar, which engages the disk or collar, and the other ends of the bars are provided with right angular hooks 10, which are inserted in the staples 11, secured to the body of the brooder A. Supported by the disk is a can or receptacle 12, in which the heating medium is i received. It-is my intention to use ashes as a heating medium, as they supply a very even temperature for a period varying with Weather conditions from twelve hours in exthe receptacle 12 and is provided with openings through which the bars 8 extend. The screenis provided with rims 14' at each end, and the screen is supported by the disk by means of hooks 14 one end of the hooks engaging the flanges 6 of the collar and the other end passing beneath the lower rim 14; of the screen. The lower rim of the screen has a brooder cloth 15 sewed thereto, which extends downward toward the bottom of the brooder for retaining the heat beneath the heating receptacle. The receptacle 12 is provided with a cover 16.
The temperature of the ashes which are deposited within the receptacle 12 can be governed or regulated so that the brooder a greater or excessive heat within the brooder than under ordinary conditions. When hot coals are placed within the receptacle, they are generally smothered between layers of loose or dead ashes.
It will be noted that I have provided simple device which consists of few parts which can be assembled and disconnected readily. The wire screen 13 forms a medium for preventing the chicks from coming in contact with the heating receptacle 12, and the heating receptacle is supported within the brooder at an elevation suiticiently high so that the chicks can pass beneath the heating receptacle.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a brooder,,of a disk, bars removably connected to the disk for supporting the disk at an elevation within the brooder, a heating medium supported upon the disk, a screen surrounding the heating medium, and means connected to the disk for supporting the screen.
2. The combination with a brooder, of a disk, bars for supporting the disk, a screen, means for supporting the screen upon the disk, a-brooder cloth connected to the screen, and a heating receptacle'supported by the disk.
3. The combination with a brooder, a disk having an upturned flange at its outer edge, this flange slotted, bars secured to the disk and extending through the slots in the flange, the bars having hooks on their outer Patented Mar. 12, 1912.
