To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, LYDA BECKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at lndianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Skir't-h/[ai-kers, of which the following is a specification.

The primary object of this invention is the provision of a device whereby ladies and misses7 skirts may be fitted so as to hang evenly at any desired distance from the surface, thereby insuring a tidy appearance.

The invention has for its object to snpply an appliance of the character set forth which when not required for immediate use may be reduced to a compact form so as not to occupy a great amount of space when stored or laid aside and which will admit of the device being quickly set up when rcquired for use.

The invention contemplates a base, uprights detachably fitted to the base, an indicator adjustable upon the uprights, means for securing the indicator in the required position, said indicator being formed in sections, and means for securing the sections when the parts of the indicator are in proper' position.

The invention consists of the novel fea tures, details of construction and combination of parts, which hereinafter will be more particularly set forth, illustrated in the accompanying' drawings, and pointed ont in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawings, forminga part of the specification, Figure l is a perspective view of a skirt marker embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a side view of the device. Fig. 3 is a side view of the appliance taken at a right angle to Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detail view, showing the joint formed between the sections of the indicator'. Fig. 5 is a section of the indicator on the line of Fig. 1.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description, and indi cated in all the views of the drawings, by the same reference characters.

The base l may be of any construction and outline and is preferably of circular form and comprises two semicircular sections which are hingedly connected as indicated at 2 to admit of one section folding upon the other. The base may be constructed of sheet metal or any desired material and may be of any size depending upon the particular use for which the device is intended. Keepers 3 are located upon the base and may be formed in any manner. Uprights 4t are detachably fitted to the base and consist of posts which have their lower ends bent substantially at a right angle to slip into the keepers 3. The uprights 4 may be of any length and are graduated in inches and fractional parts of inches to determine the position of the indicator according to the desired length of th skirt or the distance of the lower edge thereof from the surface.

The indicator 5 is adjustable upon thc uprights 4t and is preferably of circular out line, the middle portion being cut away to provide a space for the person nearing the skirt to be properly marked. The indicator is formed of similar parts, thereby enabling the saine to be reduced to a comparatively small package so as to occupy a minimum amount of space when not required for immediate use. The indi ator is mounted upon the uprights 4l and is adjustable thereon and adapted to be secured in the located position by fastening means such as setscrews 6. Each section of the indicator has openings 7 to receive the uprights 4. ln the eventl of the indicator being formed of thin material such as sheet metal it is desirable to reinforce the same to hold the parts of the indicator in a given plane. For this purpose a bar S is secured to the under side of cach part or section of the indicator and extends nearly the entire length thereof. Openings are formed in the bar 8 in position to register with the openings 7. Other bars 9 are secured to the upper side of cach section or part of the indicator and the inner ends of the bars f) are bent upwardly, as indicated at 10, and have threaded openings in which are titled the set screws 6, the ends of said set screws being adapted to engage the adjacent sides of the uprights to hold the indicator in the located position. A tongue l1 is provided at the ends of one of the sections or parts of the indicator to overlap the adjacent ends of the other section or part. Narrow slots 12 are formed in the ends of the sections or parts of the indicator in line with the inner edges of the tongues 11 and these slots receive the inner folds or edge portions of slides 13 which are mounted upon the tongues 11 and are adapted to engage the overlapping portions of the sections so as to secure the part-s when in position and to stiii'en and strengthen the joints. Each of the slides 13 has a set screw 14 by means of which it is secured in the required position.

When the device is reduced to a compact form the indicator is det-ached from the uprights 4C and the sections or parts are placed one upon the other and the uprights t are disengaged from the base and the latter is folded so that one part overlies the other, the indicator being placed upon the base and the uprights arranged upon the folded parts, the Wohle forming a comparatively small package. lhen the appliance is set up for use it appears substantially as indicated in Fig. 1, t-he parts of the base being extended, the lower bent ends of the uprights being fitted into the keepers 3 and the parts of the indicator slipped upon the uprights with their inner ends secured by means of the slides 13. The indicator is adjusted according to the desired length of the skirt to be fitted and the person wearing the skirt stands upon the base 1, the skirt being draped about the indicator so as to encircle the outer edge thereof. The marking may be effected in any manner common in the art after which the indicator may be dropped upon the base vby loosening the set screw 6 so that the person may step from t-he device without tripping or causing accident. It is not essential that the indicator be dropped as the person may step thereover.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the construction and of the method of operation will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art to which the invention appertains, and while I have described the principle of operation of t-he invention, together with the device which I now consider to be the embodiment thereof, I desire to have it understood that the device shown is merely illustrative, and that such changes may be made when desired as are within the scope of the claims appended hereto.

Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is f 1. In a skirt marker a supporting structure, an indicator-mounted upon the supporting structure and comprising sections formed wit-h projecting tongues to overlap the joint formed between the meeting ends, said sections having slots at the sides of the tongues, slides mounted upon the tongues and adapted to engage the overlapping parts at the meeting ends of the sections, and means :t'or securing the slides in the adjusted position.

2. In a skirt marker comprising a support-ing structure, an indicator adjustable upon the supporting structure and comprising` sections in which are formed openings to receive members of the supporting structure, upper and lower bars secured to the sections to stien and strengthen the same, the lower bars having openings to register with the openings in the sections and the upper bars having end portions bent in line with the openings and provided with threaded openings, and set screws mounted in said threaded openings to engage wit-h the members of the supporting structure passing through the openings to hold the indicator in the adjusted position.

3. A skirt marker comprising a base formed of foldable parts, each of the parts having keepers, uprights having their lower ends bent and insertible in said keepers, an indicator formed of similar sections having their end portions 'formed with overlapping parts, said sections being adjustable upon the uprights, means for securing the indicator in the located posit-ion, and means applied to the overlapping parts of the indicator to secure the same when assembled.
