TONGUE FOR SHOES OR THE LIKE.

To alt whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BRADFORD ARNOLD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eaton Rapids, in the county of Eaton and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Tongue for Shoes or the Like, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists of an extension of the tongue of a shoe or the like, said extending part being larger toward its tip or lateral end than nearer the tongue proper. Hitherto such tongues have been apt to slide out of their proper place when in use thus rendering them that much less useful.
The object of my invention is to hold the tongue in its proper, intended place under the laced flaps of a shoe or the like and thus increase its usefulness to the user. I attain this object by said extending part being smaller toward the tongue than toward its lateral end thus furnishing a unique, easy tying place for holding the tongue, the enlarged end holding the tie from slipping off and yet it may be loosed eonjointly with unlacing thus allowing all kinds of freedom to adjust or remove the shoe or the like from the person using it, thus being an improvement both upon a sewed tongue by such freedom and upon any such tongue by reason of its being held toward its top end from lopping over, where the tie naturally comes, while the so-called sewed tongue is generally only held half way up.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a tongue showing my improvement extending therefrom and showing the flaps and lace loose. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my improved extension engaged by a lace.

A is the tongue.
B is the enlarged end of a projection from or extension of the tongue and C is its neck or smaller part.
D is the lace and E, E the two flaps.
Having thus described my invention and its purpose slight deviations might be made without departing from the spirit of my improvei'nent which is the holding of the tongue during use and its easy, free loosing during adjustment.
I claim:
The combination with a lace shoe, of a tongue having an extension integral with its upper end, said extension consisting of a laterally extending body portion and a narrow neck uniting the body portion with the end of the tongue, said extension being adapted to be engaged by the lacing to hold the tongue up in the shoe.
