Description

Meseta-eem SAMUEL G. DUGDALE, 0F RICHMOND, INDIANA.
Letters Patent No. 101,987, dated April 19, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN SLATE-WASHERS.
`The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL G. DUGDALE, of the city 0f Richmond, county of Wayne, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Apparatus for Cleaning Slates and other plane surfaces; and I do hereby declare that the lbllinving is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings niaking a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side view.
Figureg, an end vew. with section cut off, showing contents;
A is a non-compressible case, of any suitable matcrial, size, 0r shape, with an opening, 0, lips c c, and handle d.
B is a sponge, for the purpose of holding or retaining water or other fluids to be used.
Inclosed within the case A, in connection with the sponge B, isa piece of material of finer fiber than the jsponge, as the cotton cloth i, passing between the lips rc c, and fastened by them, forming a rubber, f.
vIhe sponge B is filled with the fluid to be used by means of the holes n n, and is conducted to the rubber by the cloth fi. AThe rubber f being drawn over the slate the fluid is'supplied from the sponge by attract-ion in sufticent quantity to cleanse the same.
The nature of' my invention consists in having a sponge for the purpose of holding or retaining uitls, inclosed within a non-compressibie case, in :connection with a-material of liner ber than thesponge, leading to a rubber for cleaning slates, thereby constituting a washer that only dainpens the slate, as the sponge rctains thc fiuid until it is drawn from it by capillary attraction, by means of' the friction produced by the rubber, consequently does not requireas lnuch time for drying ofi as when washed by other washers that leave a surplus of' water, and the necessity' of wiping is in a measure avoided.
- I do not claim rigid water-reservoirs in connection with a rubber for the purpose of washing slates, as these are well-known devices; but
Vhat I do claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The non-compi'essible case A, with holes n n, lips 'c c, sponge B, cotton cloth t', or its equivalent, and
rubber j, when arranged and used in the manner and for the purpose above set forth.
. I SAML. G. DUGDALE.
