Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. MALOY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Sufl'ern, in the county of Rockland and State of New York, have made and invented certain new and useful Improvements in Backs for Brake-Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to steel backs for brake shoes formed from a single piece of metal by'bending and shaping a suitable blank, the same being designed to be placed in a mold, in position to become embedded in the rear surface or back of a brake shoe, as molten metal is poured thereinto, the object thereof beingto provide an improved steel back of the type referred to having features of constructlon and advantage as hereinafter disclosed, and to provide a blank from which such a steel back may be formed by suitable bending and shaping operations, all as hereinafter defined in the concluding claims.

The blank from which my improved steel back is formed comprises oblong side portions 5-5, of approximate rectangular form connected with one another by across piece 6 extending between the sides and located at or about their middle as shown. This cross piece is bent and forced out of the plane of the sides to provide a projecting loop or lug 7 in the completed back shown in Fig. 4, the sides or ends 8 of which are about-at right angles to the plane of the sides as shown, the sides themselves being curved as shown to conform, approximately, to :the curvature of the brake shoe in which 7 serves as a mean's; ,for attaching the bra e shoe to a brake-head by means of a key, as will be understood.

The provision of recesses at the place where the edges of the sides 5 and cross piece 6 meet prevents the formation of cracks, or undue straining of the metal as the cross piece is bent to form the 100 or lug 7, and results in a construction in w 'ich the bases of the ends 8 are brought into a position between the edges and near the middle of the sides, and whereby the ends of the lu do not spring from the inner edges'of t e sides of the back as is the case in former types of steel backs. More space is also secured between the lower portion of the ends 8 of the lug, the side portions 9 of the finished back are brought closer together than were such recesses not provided, and a greater length of cross piece from which to form the lug is secured than in former blanks.
The blanks from which the steel back is formed may be produced in any way. They 'are, however, preferably out from a long narrow strip of sheet metal with a minimum wasteof material in accordance with the method of cutting blanks for brake shoe backs disclosed and claimed in the patent to Harry Jones, No. 995,011, June 13th, 1911.
.Fig. 1 shows such a strip, and the lines appearing thereupon indicate the path along which the sheet is cut, as by means of suitable cutting dies. Fig. 2 shows a section cut from the sheet, which is subsequently divided to form individual blanks such as are shown in Fig. 3.
In forming blanks in accordance with the method above referred to, projections 11, corresponding in outline with the recesses 10, are secured at the ends of the side 7 portions 5, which projections serve to anchor the ends of the sides.9 of the finished back more firmly in the back of the cast metal bodyof the shoe as the same is formed, and to prevent the end portions of the body of the shoe from shifting longitudinally and becoming detached, should the shoe be cracked or broken in use, it being not uncommon in practice for the cast metal body portion oi a brake shoe tobe cracked or roken transversely, in which event, if the parts of the shoe be not securely held or bound together, the end portions are liable to become detached and fall from the shoe, and result in serious accident. Having thus described and explained my invention,I claim and desire ,to secure by Letters Patent 1. A blank for a backfor a brake shoe having two' side portions and a cross-piece extending between them whereby they are joined together, said blank having recesses adjacent the ends of said cross-piece and extending into said sides.
2. A blank for a back for a brake shoe having two similar side portions and a crosspiece extending between them whereby they are joined together, said blank havingrecesses adjacent the ends of saidcross-pie0e and extending into said sides, and projections corresponding inoutline with said recesses at the ends of said side portions.
3. A blank for a back fora brake .shoe having two side portions and a cross-piece extending between them whereby they are joined together, said blank having two recesses ad acent one end of the cross-piece and located one upon either side of said cross-piece and extending into one of the sides aforesaid of said blank. j

the same comprising two side portions and a projecting loop or lug formed integrally with said sides and whereby they are connected with one another, the bases of the end portions of said lug joining with the side portions of said blank between the side edges thereof.
5. A back to be embedded in. a brake shoe, the same being formed from a single piece of metal and comprising two side portions and a projecting loop orlug extending from one of said sides to the other, said lug springing from the middle portion of said sides and midway between the side edges thereof, the base portions of the ends of said lug extending longitudinally of the shoe.
6. A back to be embedded in a brake shoe, the same having two parallel side portions separate fromone another and a projecting loop located atthe middle portion of said sides whereby they are joined together, and projecting lugs lying in the plane of said sides and located at the ends of said side portions.
7 A back to be embedded in a brake shoe, the same having substantially parallel sides separate from one another and a projecting loop located at the middle portion-of said sides whereby they are joined together, and lugs at the ends of said side portions, said lugs lying in the plane of said sides and extending toward one another.
