HANDLE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JAMES E. KEILY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Handle, of which the following is the specification.

This invention relates to that class of handles in which a grip piece is mounted between attaching brackets, the latter being secured to a receptacle such as a wash boiler or its cover.

One object of the invention is,to provide a grip that is removably mounted between the end brackets, and fixed therein by adjustable clamping means for rigidly clamping the brackets to the grip to prevent the grip from becoming loose.

Another object is to provide a removable grip piece for the handle, the parts of which can be cheaply manufactured and readily assembled.

A handle made in accordance wit-h my invention may be used on various articles although in the drawings I have shown an embodiment thereof especially adapted for use on a wash boiler cover.

In the drawings,Figure 1, at the right is a side elevation and, at the left a sectional view taken along the line m-y of Fig. 2, of the handle, showing it as secured to the cover of a wash boiler. Fig. 2 is an end view of the parts seen in Fig. 1. In Figs. 1 and 2 there is shown a portion of a clothes stick supported by the end brackets. Figs. 3, i and 5, Figs. 3 and 5 being enlarged, show detail views of the handle and all are shown in side elevation below the central horizontal line and in central cross section above such line. Fig. 6 is a side View of a wash boiler having a handle, constructed in accordance with my invention, secured to the cover thereof and a clothes stick sup ported in the brackets of the handle.

B represents a wash boiler or like receptacle and G is the cover therefor. The handle comprises a grip A of wood or like ma terial and of any desired design and has its ends turned down to form cylindrical projections or tenons a. These ends a are threaded to receive the ferrules D, which, as shown particularly in Fig. 5, are formed of thin sheet metal which is drawn into the shape of a cap, and the metal is so corrugated as to form corresponding internal and external threads on the ferrules. internal threads cooperate with the threads on the ends of the tenons a. while the external threads cooperate with the screwcaps, as hereinafter described. The ferrules, when desired, may be held against removal and prevented from turning by means of nails N inserted through the holes (Z in the closed ends of the ferrules and driven into the ends of the grip A. The ends of the grip A are bored out, as seen at a forming recesses larger than the diameter of the nails to be used, for a depth of about half the length of the nails N, to prevent the ends of the grip A from splitting when the nails N are driven therein.

The brackets P fit over the ferrules D and are clamped against the shouldered ends of the grip A by the screw cap pieces E. These cap pieces are threaded to screw on the external threads of the ferrules D, and each cap piece has an outwardly extending flange 0 at its open end to engage against the outer faces of the brackets P. Each cap piece E is recessed, as seen at e. to be free from the head at of the nail N thereunder when the cap piece E is screwed into place.

It will readily be seen from the above description of the parts that any looseness of the grip A in the brackets P can be readily taken up and the handle made rigid by tightening the screw cap pieces E. The grip piece A will, at once, he understood as also removable upon unscrewing and re moving the cap pieces E and slightly springing the brackets apart. The lower ends of the brackets P have feet 29 bent therefrom and conformed to fit the cover C to which they are secured by the rivets r or by any other suitable means.

In the drawings I have shown each of the brackets P as having a hole 0 in the body portion thereof and the purpose of this, as will be seen by reference to Figs. 1, 2 and 6, is to provide a convenient means for supporting a clothes stick 0, when it is not in use.

What I claim is:

1. A handle comprising brackets provided with openings, a grip having ferrules threaded on its ends, the ferrules engaging the openings in the brackets, and screwcaps threaded on the ferrules outside of the brackets so as to inclose the ends of the grip and secure it removably and adjustably in place in the brackets.

2. A handle comprising brackets provided with openings, a grip having ferrules threaded on its ends, the ferrules being formed of thin metal corrugated to form corresponding internal and external threads, and screw-caps formed with threads adapted to engage-the external threads of the ferrules, the ferrules engaging the openings in the brackets and the screw-caps being screwed on the ferrules outside of the brackets so as to inclose the ends of the grip and secure it removably and adjustably in place.

3. A handle comprising brackets provided with openings, a grip having ferrules threaded on its ends, the ferrules being in the form of caps and having central perforations, nails driven through said perforations into the grip, and screw-caps threaded upon the ferrules, the ferrules engaging the openings in the brackets and the screw-caps being screwed on the ferrules outside of the brackets so as to inclose the heads of the nails and secure the grip removably and adjustably in place.
