Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EUGENE B. BARTLETT, a citizen of .the United States, and a resident of Oleveland, in'the county of Guyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and Improved Latrine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention relates to certain improvements in latrines adapted for use in public buildings, such as schools, hospitals, depots, and the like, and more particularly involves certain improvements over the construction disclosed in United States Patent No. 57 3,7 44, December 22, 1896.

The object of the invention is to maintain a more uniform and continuous supply of water to the inclined sides of the body portion, and to positively prevent the passage of paper or the like into the ventilating duct.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, and in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal section through one end of a latrine constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a transverse section on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a front elevation of the parts shown in Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the means employed for supplying water to the walls of the body.

The body of the latrine is made up of a plurality of sections bolted or otherwise rigidly secured together, each section having front and rear inclined walls 10 and 11 and a curved bottom 12, the walls and bottom being preferably formed integral. At one end of the terminal section is provided a water inlet connection 13 for facilitating flushing, the bottom and sides being of such form as to facilitate the flow of the water longitudinally of the latrine, as in the construction disclosed in the patent above referred to. Each section is provided with two air inlet openings 14: at the front edgethereof at opposite sides of the center, and is provided with an air outlet 15 at the upper edge of the rear side thereof at the center. The air outlet is connected to a ventilating duct having any suitable means for creating a circulation of air therethrough, and this duct involves an elbow 16 preferably formed of enameled metal and leading from the outlet upward. In the connection between the elbow and the outlet there is inserted a perforated mctal plate 17 serving to positively prevent the passage of any foreignmatter into the ventilating duct, but, at the same time, not interfering with the free passage of air. The edges of the plate are preferably clamped between the base flanges of the elbow and oppositely-clamped flanges ,around the air outlet, as illustrated in Fig. 2.

To deliver a continuous and uniform sheet or curtain of water to the inclined side walls of the body, there has been previously employed a pipe having a series of small perfo rations therein. In this construction, the

openings are liable to become clogged and the portion of the pipe farthest from the source of supply does not always receive the same quantity of'water the portion of the pipe adjacent the supply does. To obviate these objections, I provide a series of troughs 18, each substantially V-shaped in cross section and each of a length substantially equal to the length of one section or unit of the latrine. One edge of each trough is provided with a series of notches or corrugations, while the opposite edge is provided with lugs 19 adapted for the insertion of screws or bolts for holding the trough to the walls of the body. Two of these troughs are employed for each section, one trough being secured to the, front wall 10 adjacent the upper edge thereof and the other being attached to the rear wall 11 adjacent its upper edge. The notched edge of each trough is slightly lower than the opposite edge thereof, so that the water flows through between the notches and down the side of the trough into engagement with the side wall of the body. By means of the screws or bolts entering the lugs 19, the elevation of the ends of the troughs may be adjusted so as to maintain a uniform overflow of the trough throughout the length thereof.

Two separate water supply pipes 20 are provided, one for each series of troughs along the walls. Each pipe is provided with one or more depending branch pipes 21 leading into each trough to deliver water thereto. The branch pipes are of such size that there is no liability of their becoming clogged or choked'to interfere with the free delivery of water, and the very nature of the troughs is such that the free overflow of water cannot be readily interfered with.

The water is supplied through the pipes under sufficient pressure so that each of the troughs along the length of the latrine receives substantially the same amount of wa ter, and a continuous and uniform curtain or sheet of water is presented upon each of the side walls of the body.

Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

1. A latrine, including a body having inclined sides and means for wetting said sides including an overflow trough adjacent the upper edge of each of said sides and supply pipes for delivering water to each trough, each of said troughs being substantially V-shaped in cross section and having a notched or serrated overflow edge and a lower unbroken dripping edge, and independent means adjacent opposite ends of each trough for securing the same to the side of the body and permitting of a vertical adjustment to maintain a uniform overflow of the troughs throughout the length thereof.

2. A latrine including a body having an inclined side and means for wetting "said side, including an overflow trough adjacent to the upper edge of the side, and a supply pipe for delivering water to the trough, the

trough being substantially V-shaped in cross section and having an unbroken dripping edge at the bottom thereof, one side of said trough being located substantially against 4 section and having an unbroken dripping edge at the bottom thereof, one side of the said trough being located substantially against the side of the body and its other side inclined to the first mentioned Si e at such an angle that the water overflowing the second mentioned side flows directly along the outer surface of the side and onto the side of the body to flush the latter.
