CUTTING-OFF TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, New A. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Jamestown, in the county of Chautauqua and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cutting-Off Tools, of which the following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification.
The invention relates to cutting-off tools for lathes and similar machines; and the object of my invention is first, to provide a slidably balanced cutting-off tool in which the cutters work synchronously in opposite sides of the cut and to provide means for manually feeding said cutters; and second, to provide means for supporting said cut-- ting-01f tool on the bar operated upon, and the invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the parts as described in this specification and shown in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is an end elevation of the attaching portion of the tool, and showing the cutting-off portion of the tool in perspective. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the attaching port-ion of the tool in the closed position showing the cutting-oft portion in perspective; and Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the attaching portion of the tool in the open position. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the cutting-off portion of the tool showing the attaching portion in the closed position and the cutters in the open position; and Fig. 5 is a plan view of the opposite side of the tool showing the attaching portion of the tool in the open position and the cutters in the closed position touching one another.
Like numerals of reference refer to corresponding parts in the several views.
The numeral 10 designates the base plate of the tool which has the side opening 34 and the dove-tail- shaped grooves 11 and 12 along the cutting face of the same. The slide plates 13 and 14 are slidably mounted in grooves 11 and 12 on opposite sides of the opening 34 in base plate 10. The slide plates 13 and 14 are connected by the toggle links 15 and 16, link 15 being pivotally attached to slide plate 13 and link 16 pivotally attached to slide plate 14. The link 16 has the enlargement 17 thereon to receive the end of the lever 18 for manually operating the slide plates 13 and 14. The slide plate 13 has the plate 19 attached thereto by suitable screws, and a cutter 20 is firmly clamped to slide plate 13 by plate 19. Similarly slide plate 14 has the plate 21 attached thereto by screws, and the cutter 22 is clamped between the slide plate 14 and the clamp plate 21. The cutters 20 and 22 are arranged to meet at about the center of the opening 34 so as to cut off a bar held within said opening.
The slide plates 13 and 14 are held normally in the open position by means of springs 23, which are attached to a suitable pin on said slide plates and on the plate 10 so that the cutters: 20 and 22 on the slide plates 13 and 14 are moved toward one another by means of the manual operation of lever 18, and as soon as the pressure is released from said lever the springs 23 will return the slide plates to their normal open position. The holding or clamping jaws 25 of the tool are attached to the opposite side of base plate 10 from the cutters 20 and 22. The intermeshing toothed aws 25 are slidably mounted in dovetail-shaped grooves 24 in base plate 10. The jaws 25 are provided on their opposite inner ends with the angular opening 26 thcrebetween to obtain a firm hold upon the bar to be cut and the intermeshing teeth 27 which hold the jaws firmly in line when intermeshed, as shown in Fig. 2.
The-jaws 25 are connected by a toggle joint consisting of a cone-shaped turnplate 28 and links 33, which plate 28 is mounted in an extension 29 on the side of plate 10. The extension 29 has the slot 30 therein and cone 28 has holes 31 therein for turning the same. The cone 28 is held in a cone-shaped opening within the extension 25) by means of a screw bolt 32. The links 33 are pivotally attached near the periphery of the circular cone-shaped. plate 28 at one end, and at the other end to the jaws 25. I,
It is apparent that a lever or bar inserted in opening 31 will turn cone plate 28, thereby actuating links 33 and moving the jaws 25 to and from one another, and that the bar to be out off may be inclosed between the intermeshingjaws 25 and the tool is supported thereon while the cutters 20 and 22 are pressed upon the revolving bar to cut it off. The opening 26 in the jaws is preferably V-shaped in order that different sized bars may be held therebetween while cutting them oil, as shown in Fig. 4.
The opening 3a in the base plate 10 admits to the opening 26 in the jaws 25. A hand bar 35 is firmly bolted to one end of plate 10 by means of which the tool is handled in placing it upon the bar to be cut off and also by means of which the tool is manually held from turning with said bar that is being cut off. The hand bar 35 may also be used as a shank for the tool for mounting it in the tool post of a lathe.
I claim as new:
1. A cutting-0E tool comprising oppositely placed slides, connecting toggle links pivotally attached to said slides to simultaneously operate the same, and means on said slides for holding oppositely placed cutting tools.
2. A cutting-01f tool comprising a supporting plate, plates slidably mounted on said supporting plate, toggle links pivotally connecting said slidably mounted plates, a lever attached to one of said links for simultaneously actuating said links and slide plates, and means for holding oppositely placed cutters on said slide plates.
3. A cutting-01f tool comprising a base plate having parallel dove-tail-shape grooves therein, slide-plates slidably mounted in said grooves, toggle links connecting said slide-plates, a lever attached to one of said toggle links for manually operating said slideplates, means for clamping oppositely placed cutting tools upon said slideplates, coil springs attached to said slideplates and said base plate to return said slide-plates to normal position when released from manual pressure, and a bar attached to said base plate for manually controlling the same.
4. A cutting-off tool comprising a base plate having an opening in the side thereof to receive the bar to be cut off, oppositely placed cutting 'tools on said base plate, means for supporting said base on said bar to be cut oif, and means for simultaneously moving said cutters toward one another on said base to cut on opposite sides of said bar.
5. A cutting-off tool comprising a base plate having an opening therein to receive the bar to be cut off, jaws slidably mounted on one side of said plate for clamping said bar to be cut ofi, means for operating said jaws, and cutters on said base plate having means for actuating the same to cut the bar.
6. A cutting-off tool comprising a base plate having a sidewise opening therein for the bar to be cut off, jaws slidably mounted opposite one another and on opposite sides of said opening in said base plate, said jaws having an angular opening therethrough, intermeshing teeth on said aws to hold them firmly in line with one another, means for moving said aws to clamp said bar, and cutters on the opposite side of said base plate having means for feeding the same to cut said bar.
7. A cutting-01f tool comprising a base plate having a side opening therein to receive the bar to be cut off, jaws slidably mounted on opposite sides of said opening, intermeshing teeth in said jaws to hold them in line, toggle links and a turn plate for manually operating said jaws to clamp said bar, cutting-oft tools slidably mounted on the opposite side of said base plate and on opposite sides of said opening, and toggle links and a lever for manually feeding said cutting-0E tools to out said bar.
8. A cutting-off tool comprising a base plate having a side opening therein to re ceive the bar to be cut 015?, jaws slidably mounted on opposite sides of said opening,
intermeshing teeth in said jaws to hold them in line, an extension on said base plate having a cone-shaped opening therein, a coneshaped turn plate rotatably mounted in said opening, links pivotally connect-ing said turn-plate to said jaws, said extension having a slot therein, said cone-shaped turn plate having holes therein in line with said slot for turning said turn-plate to slide said jaws to and from one another, cutting-off tools on the opposite side of said base plate, and means for feeding said tools toward one another to out said bar.
9. A cutting-off tool comprising a base plate having an opening in the side thereof to receive a revolving bar to be out 01f, oppositely placed cutting tools on said base plate, means for holding said base plate on said bar, means for simultaneously moving said cutting tools toward one another on said base plate to out said bar from opposite sides, clamping jaws slidably mounted on the opposite side of said base plate from said cutting tools, links pivotally attached to said jaws, and a turn plate pivotally attached to said links to operate the same, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
