HORSESHOE.

To all 'whom t may concern.'

Be it known that we, LOUIS AHRENs and EMANUEL M. GILoWsKY, both citizens of the United States, and residents of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of Visconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horseshoes; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

Our invention consists in what is herein particularly set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings and pointed Vout in the claims of this specification, its object being to provide horseshoes having detachable cushion-calks that may be replaced with new ones from time to time when too much worn.

Figure l of the drawings represents a plan view of one of our improved horseshoes inverted and partly in horizontal section; Fig. 2, a partly sectional elevation of the horseshoe as indicated by line 2 2 of Fig. l, and Fig. 3, a perspective view of the metal portion of one of our detachable cushion-calks for said horseshoe.

Referring by numeral to the drawings 4 indicates a horseshoe having a toe-clip 5, and heel and toe bosses 6, each boss being shown as provided with a groove in which to slide a calk 7 from either open end of the same and the groove in each heel-boss may be either positioned longitudinally or transversely of said horseshoe, the transverse disposition of the groove being illustrated in the drawings herewith. Each calk has match fit in the boss-groove with which it engages, the upper end of said calk being provided with flanges 7 in opposition to flanges 6 of the relative boss of the horseshoe, and a screw-bolt 8 is employed to secure said calk in engagement with said groove. It is preferable, as herein shown, to have the screw-bolt disposed transversely of the boss and calk-shank with which it engages, and the bolt-aperture 9 in said calk-shank is vertically elongated to provide for calk-play in the same direction.

The head of each calk is shown provided with projections l0, pointed or otherwise, with which to engage a rubber block 1l that fills the space in the corresponding boss above said calk, and thereby constitutes a cushion designed to absorb shock that would otherwise come upon the foot of a horse shod with our improved shoe. ment of the head projections of a calk with a rubber cushion-block prevents the block from working out of the boss with which the calk is detachably secured. Without departure from the scope of what is herein claimed, some other form of cushion device may be substituted for the aforesaid rubber block, our invention having especial reference to interchangeable cushioned-calks.

The lower wearing-end of each calk may be primarily sharp, as herein shown, or blunt, according to the demands of the trade and surface conditions, new calks being readily substituted for those that bec-ome too much worn. The wear being upon the calks, the shoe is practically everlasting, and thus farriery expense to a horse owner is greatly reduced.

l. The combination with a horseshoe having a grooved heel and toe bosses each provided with opposite inturned lower flanges,

a calk slidably engaging each boss and provided with head projections, as well as with upper outer side iianges that seat upon those of the boss; a cushion-block boss-groove filler in which the head projections of each calk are embedded, and means for securing each calk in vertical play connection with the boss with which it and the cushion-block are engaged.

2. The combination with a horseshoe having heel and toe bosses each grooved its entire length to be open at both ends and provided with opposite inturned lower flanges, a calk slidably engaging each boss from either end thereof and provided with head projections, as well as with upper outer side anges that seat upon those of the boss; a cushion-block boss-groove filler in which the head projections of each calk are embedded, and means for securing each calk in vertical play connection with the boss with which it and the cushion-block are engaged.
