To all 'whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, SIMON M. SGHAEFLE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Naperville, county of Dupage, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mop- Presses, of which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates to improvements in mop presses andhas for its object the production of a device of this character by means of which the water may be forced from a mop-head with ease and expedition.
A further object is the production of a device as mentioned which will be of durable and economical construction, one which may be readily manipulated, `and one which will be of great efficiency in operation.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
Vith these objects in view my invention consists in a mop press characterized as above mentioned and in certain details of construction and arrangement of parts all as will be hereinafter fully described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention will be more readily understood by' reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specifica tion, and in which,
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a mop press embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary detail sect-ion taken on line zi-*QJ of Fig. l, Figs. 3, l and 5 are enlarged detail sections taken on lines 'u1-w, m-m and g/-g/ respectively of Fig. 1, Fig. 6 is a central vertical longitudinal section of the device, and Fig. 7 is a transverse section taken on line z-z of Fig. 6.
The preferred form of construction as illustrated in the drawings comprises a preferably metallic vessel 1 which is rectangular in form and open at its upper side. Arranged centrally within the vessel 1 in the upper end thereof are two opposingly arranged rockingly mounted perforated plates 2 and 2 between which, when the device is in operation, the head of the mop'is positioned in order to effect the expelling of the water therefrom. Each of the plates 2, 2 is secured to or mounted upon a substantially U-shaped frame member 3 which is of such a width and so arranged within the vessel 1 as to be adapted to oscillate freely within the latter. The lateral edge portions 4 of The upper edge portion 6 of each plate emi braces a bar 7 which is loosely carried ther in, the bars 7 serving as a means of reinforcing the upper edge portions of said plates, as will be readily understood. /Vith this arrangement it will be seen that the plates 2 and 2 are securely and eifectually held upon the corresponding members 3 and without the use of rivets or other similar securing devices.
The lower ends of the frame members 3 are arranged in close proximity with each other' as illustrated in the several views, the same being held in this relative positon by means of links or straps 8 which are provided at the opposite sides of said frame members adjacent the lower extremities thereof, said frame members being pivotally secured as at 9 to the opposite ends of said links as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2. This construction, as will be observed, permits of free rocking of the upper ends of said frame members and hence of the plates 2 and 2 carried thereby with' the pivots 9 as centers or axes of oscillation.
The outer ends 10 ofthe frame members 3 are bent upon themselves straddling the upper edges of the opposite walls or sides of the vessel 1, the lower extremities of the portions 10 being pivotally secured to said side walls of said vessel through the medium of bearing members 11 which are rigidly secured to said walls of said vessel by means of rivets 12, said members 10 engaging the reduced cylindrically formed outer end portions 11 of said bearing members. Screws 13 threaded into said portions 11 of the bearing members 11 serve as a means of preventing displacement or disengagement of the ends of the members 10 from said bearing members. Arranged outward of the bearing members 11 the same resting against the outer extremities of the portions 11V thereof are plates 14 which are secured in position, as will be observed, by the screws 13, said plates 14 being provided as a means of reinforcing the vessel 1. The screws 13 serve only to secure the upper ends of said' plates in position, the lower ends thereof being rigidly secured in position by means of rivets 15.
The bearing members 11 are so arranged that the axes of the portions 11 thereof are coaxial with the pivotal points 9 so that oscillation of the frame members 3 and hence of the plates 2 and 2l (such oscillat-ion being about the two points of pivotal connection provided at each side of the frame member 3) will be free and easy.
Connected with each of the end portions 10 of each of the frame members 3 is one end of a toggle 16, the outer ends of the toggles 16 being pivotally secured to the corresponding side of the vessel 1 through the medium of a bearing member 17, the ends of said toggles engaging the reduced cylin drical bearing portions 17 of said bearing members, the latter being rigidly secured to the vessel by means cf rivets 18. Screws 19 threaded into the portions 17 of said bearing members serve to prevent displacement or disengagement of the toggles therewith, washers 2O being preferably interposed between the heads of said screws and the adjacent sides of the secured ends of said toggles. Said toggles are so arranged that by operation thereof the plates 2 and 2 may be rocked toward and from each other, it being clear that when said toggles are actuated so that the end portions thereof are brought into alinement the plates 2 and 2 will be rocked toward each other or into engagement with a mop-head which may be arranged between the same, and that when said toggles are actuated to non-aline the elements thereof, or as shown in the drawings, said plates will be rocked from each other or to a position in which the same will release a mop-head which may be arranged between the same. Manual operation of said toggles 16 is effected through the medium of a U-shaped lever 21 the opposite ends of which are fulcrumed to bearing members 22 similar in construction to those previously described which are rigidly secured centrally to the opposite sides of the vessel 1` preferably by means of rivets 23, screws 24 extending through the plates 14 being threaded into said bearing members 22 to serve to conduce to a rigid construction. Links 25 serve to operatively connect the; opposite ends of the lever 21 with the toggle joints or knuckles in said toggles 16, the arrangement being such, asv will be observed, that downward swinging of the outer end of the lever 21 will effect such actuation of said toggles as to cause the plates 2 and 2lto be moved toward each other and upward movement of said end of said lever will effect actuation of said toggles such as to cause said plates to be moved from each other. The connections between the elements in each of the toggles and the link 25 connected therewith is effected preferably in the manner as shown in Fig. et, the connection as there illustrated comprising a headed pivot pin 26 and a screw 27 threaded thereinto, a washer 2S being interposed between the head of said screw and the end of said pivot pin. The connection between the lower end of each of the links 25 and the lever 21 is effected preferably in the manner illustrated in Fig. 5, the connection as there illustrated being formed by the headed pivot pin 29, the screw 30 which is threaded into said pivot pin and the washer 31 interposed between the head of said screw and the adjacent end of said pivot pin.
In the operation of the device the head of the mop from which the water is to be eX- pelled is first arranged between the plates 2 and 2 when the latter are in open position or in the positionV indicated in the drawings. Upon the head being properly arranged, the outer end of the lever 21 is depressed either by the hand or foot, such depression as above described effecting the forcing of said plates into engagement with the mop-head arranged therebetween. This being so the mop-head arranged between said plates will be compressed thereby, causing the forcing of the water from said head. This water will drip through the perforations in said plates and down the surfaces of the latter dropping into the bottom of the vessel which will be water-proof, the inner heads of the rivets which extend through the opposite sides of said vessel adjacent the bottom thereof being preferably soldered over in order to insure a water-tight construction. In order to hold the vessel secure in operating the lever 21 a U-shaped bar 32 may be provided, the ends of said bar being secured at the opposite sides of the vessel adjacent the bottom thereof preferably by means of the rivets 15. The outer portion of the member 32 projects considerably beyond one end of the vessel for engagement by the foot whereby said vessel may be held firm and secure during operat-ion of the lever 21 whose end is positioned adjacent that of the member 32, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 6. Handles 33 are preferably provided at the opposite ends of the vessel in order to facilitate handling and transporting of the same.
A mop press of a construction as set forth is durable and economical, the samel may be readily operated and because of the great leverage which results from the construction described, particularly through the in corporation of toggles, the device may be eifectually operated with a comparatively small amount of exertion. Because of the simplicity and the economy in the design of the device the same may be manufactured at a low cost and the construction is so designed as to not besusceptible to readily becoming inoperative. While I have illustrated and described the preferred construction for carrying my invention into eect this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction as set forth but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
I-Iaving described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. In a mop press the combination of a vessel open at its upper side; a pair of substantially vertically disposed .opposingly arranged plates mounted in said vessel, the lower ends of said plates being in fixed relation and in proximity with each other and pivotally mounted, permitting of free oscillation of the upper ends of said plates toward and from each other; a toggle connected with each of said plates for oscillating the same; and an oscillatory lever for operating said toggles; substantially as described.
2. In a mop press the combination of a vessel open at its upper side; a pair of substantially vertically disposed oppositely arranged plates mounted in said vessel, the lower ends of said plates being in fixed relation in proximity with each other and pivotally mounted, and permitting of free oscillation of the upper ends of said plates toward and away from each other; oppositely disposed toggles connected with said plates for oscillating the same; an oscillatory lever for operating said toggles; and connections between said toggles and said lever on opposite sides on the fulcrum of said lever, substantially as described.
3. In a mop press the combination of a vessel open at its upper side; a pair of substantially vertically disposed oppositely arranged plates mounted in said Vessel, the lower ends of said plates being in ixed relation in proximity with each other and pivotally mounted permitting of free oscillation of the upper ends of said plates toward and away from each other; oppositely disposed toggles connected with said plates for oscillating the same; an exteriorly positioned oscillatory lever mounted upon said vessel for operating said toggles; and connections between said toggles and said lever on opposite sides of the fulcrum of said lever, substantially as described.
4. In a mop press the combination of a vessel open at its upper side; a pair of substantially vertically disposed opposingly arranged mop-head portion plates mounted in said vessel, the lower end of said plates being in fixed relation and in proximity with each other and pivotally mounted, permitting of free oscillation of the upper ends of said plates toward and from each other; toggles arranged adjacent each of the lateral edges of each of said plates and'operatively connected therewith for oscillating said plates; and a manually operable oscillatory lever operatively connected with said toggles whereby said plates will be simultaneously rocked toward or from each other upon operation of said lever, substantially as described.
5. In a mop press the combination of a vessel open at its upper side; a pair of substantially vertically disposed oscillatory opposingly arranged plates mounted in said vessel; mountings for said plates; each of said mountings being constituted in a substantially U-shaped frame movable within said vessel, the ends of said frame being bent over opposite edges of said vessel and pivotally secured to the opposite sides of said vessel, the central portions of said frame members within said vessel being hingedly connected together; toggles connected with the outer end portions of said frame members for effecting rocking thereof toward and from each other; an oscillatory lever mounted upon said vessel; and an operative connection between said toggles and said lever whereby oscillation of said lever effects rocking of said plates toward or from each other, substantially as described.
