SUSPENSION INSULATOR-CLAMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER G. CLARK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspension Insulator-Clamps, of which the following is a specification, accompanied by drawings.
This invention relates to suspension insulator clamps and the objects of the invention are to improve upon the construction of such clamps, enable the conductor to be readily supported and held in position while the clamp is being adjusted and tightened,-
and afford provision for substantially universal movement of the suspended clamp and conductor clamped therein.
To these ends the invention consists of the devices described and claimed in this specification and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which 7 Figure 1 is a side elevation of a clamp embodying the invention in its preferred form; Fig. 2 is an end elevation; Fig. 3 is a detail View of the clamp with the clamping members separated; Fig. 4 is a detail end elevation of a modification; Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a modification; Fig. 6 is an end elevation of Fig. 5; Fig. 7 is a detail view showing the clamping members separated.
Referring to the drawings, A represents a suitable insulator having the link or rod B from which the clamp is suspended. The clamp comprises cooperating clamping members C and D preferably having elongated jaws or body portions E and F concaved to receive the conductor G. One body portion E is preferably provided wit-h the hookshaped retaining members H for holding and retaining a conductor while the clamp is being adjusted and tightened. The body portion F of member D interlocks with the body portion E of member C and is adapted to extend intermediate the hooks H as shown in Fig. 1. The wings J as shown in this instance extend opposite the hooks H, while the central portion of the body F lies between the hooks H. Means are provided for securing the clamping members C and D together, as for instance, the lugs K adapted to be held together and tightened by the bolt L passing through said lugs. Means are also provided for suspending the clamp means may take the form of the hooks O and P, having the apertured throats Q and B through which the retaining bolt S passes. In assembling the clamp, and adjusting the clamp on the insulator with the conductor G in position, the member 0 isfirst hooked through the eye T and the conductor G is supported in the hooks H. The member D is then hooked through the eye T and the body portions E and F are interlocked and the bolts L and S adjusted, tightening the clamp about the conductor G. By means of this construction the weight of the conductor is supported by the member C while the clamp is being assembled and adjusted, so that the lineman or operator is not required to support the weight of the conductor himself when adjusting the clamp. The clamp may be quickly and conveniently applied as desired and substantially universal movement is afiorded for the clamp and the conductor carried thereby, since the hooks O and P passing through the eye T may swing in any direction. The body portions E and F are preferably provided with flaring ends U, in order to aflord play for the conductor G and prevent the conductor from breaking.
In the modification shown in Fig. 4, the construction is substantially like Figs. 1 and 2, except that the body portions of the clamping members are provided with the lugs V instead of the hooks O and P and a retaining and suspending bolt W is passed through the lugs andeye T of the insulator inorder to suspend the clamp in position.
The lugs K form opposed outwardly projecting securing members for the clamping members at one side, while the hooks O and P or the lugs V form opposed outwardly extending suspending members at the other side of the body portions and the suspending members are provided with means for affording provision for suspending the clamping members from an insulator or support. These suspending means may comprise the hooks O and P or the bolt W or other equivalent means, providing in effect a universal joint. It will be seen that the securing mem bers and the susupending members extend longitudinally of the body portions E and F while the clampingbolt L passes through thesecuring members transversely across said body portions. The retaining bolt S also extends transversely across the body port-ions and by this means the clamping members may be effectively adjusted and securely clamped about the conductor.
In the modification of the invention shown in Figs. 5, 6 and 7, the clamp comprises as before, cooperating clamping members. One member a is of substantially hook-shaped or U-shaped form, adapted to retain a conductor and is provided with means affording provision for suspending the clamp from an insulator or support. The other member 6 is adapted to bridge the space between the legs of the U-shaped member a and is adjustably mounted on said member, in order to hold the conductor G and accommodate conductors of different diameters and sizes.
The U-shaped member 64 comprises a body portion 0 and the longer leg d and the shorter leg 6. The longer leg (1 is preferably provided with lugs f through which a bolt may be passed for suspending the clamp from an insulator or support. The retaining member Z) is adapted to be secured to the shorter leg 6 as by means of the nut g, and is adapted to be adjustably connected to the body portion 0 of the member a as by means of the teeth h provided on the body portion 0 and the hooks 7' provided on the retaining member Z). As shown, the body member 0 is cut away at is at each side of the longer leg d and the teeth 72, extend at each side of said cutaway portions. The hooks or claws j on the retaining member I) cooperate with the teeth 71 and the cutaway portions afford provision for adjusting the retaining member 12, since the shanks p of the claws j are aflorded play in said cutaway portions.
In assembling the clamp shown in Figs. 5, 6 and 7 the clamp may be first suspended from the insulator and the conductor G placed in position in the U-shaped member a. The retaining member I; is then adjusted in the desired position by means of the hooks j and teeth It and secured in position by the nut g.
I claim and desire to obtain by Letters Patent the following:
1. A suspension insulator clamp comprising cooperating clamping members having elongated jaws or body portions, one body portion having hook-shaped retaining mem-' bers and the other having portions adapted to cooperate with said retaining members opposed outwardly project-ing securing members at one side of the body portions, a bolt passing through said securing members for holding the clamping members together, and opposed outwardly extending suspending members at the other side of said body portions having means aflording provision for suspending said clamping members from a support.
2. A suspension insulator clamp comprising cooperating clamping members having elongated jaws or body portions provided with flaring ends, one body portion having hook-shaped retaining members and the other having portions adapted to cooperate with said retaining members opposed outwardly projecting securing members at one side, a-bolt passing through said securing members for holding the clamping members together, and opposed outwardly extending suspending members at the other side of said body portions having means affording provision-for suspending said clamping members from a support.
3. A suspension insulator clamp comprising cooperating clamping members having elongated jaws or body portions, one body portion having hook-shaped retaining members and the other having portions adapted to cooperate with said retaining members opposed outwardly projecting securing members extending longitudinally of the body port-ions, a clamping bolt passing through said securing members transversely across said body portions, said clamping members having outwardly projecting suspending members opposite the securing members and provided with means for suspending said clamping members from a support.
4. A suspension insulator clamp comprising cooperating clamping members having elongated jaws or body portions provided with flaring ends, one body portion having hook-shaped retaining members and the other having portions adapted to cooperate with said retaining members opposed outwardly projecting securing members extending longitudinally of the body portions, a clamping bolt passing through said securing members transversely across said body portions, said clamping members having outwardly projecting suspending members opposite the securing members and provided with, means for suspending said clamping members from a support.
5. A suspension insulator clamp, comprising cooperating clamping members having jaws or body portions, one member being provided with separated hook-shaped retaining portions, the other member interlocking With said first named member between said retaining portions, means for securing said members together, and means affording provision for suspending said clamping members from a support.
6. A suspension insulator clamp, comprising cooperating clamping members having jaws or body portions, one body portion being provided with hook-shaped retaining members for retaining a conductor, the other body portion being adapted to extend intermediate said hooks, means for securing said clamping members together and means afi'ording provision for suspending said clamping members from a support.
7 A suspension insulator clamp, comprising cooperating clamping members having jaws or body portions, one body portion being provided with hooks at its ends for retaining a conductor, the other body portion being adapted to extend intermediate said hooks, outwardly projecting securing members extending longitudinally of the body portions, a clamping bolt passing through said securing members transversely across said body portions, said clamping members having outwardly projecting suspending members opposite the securing members and provided with means affording provision for suspending said clamp from a support.
8. A suspension insulator clamp, comprising cooperating clamping members, one member being of hook-shaped form adapted to retain a conductor, and provided with means affording provision for suspending the clamp from a support, the other member being adapted to bridge the space between the legs of the hook-shaped member and being adjustably mounted on said member.
