Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, EDGAR W. BASSICK and ROBERT A. L. ADAMS, both citizens of the United States, residing in the city of Bridgeport, county of Fairfield, State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Latches; and we do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention has reference to spring latches, and has for its object to provide a simple and effective means for operating the same, and with this end in View our invention consists in certain details of construction hereinafter fully set forth and then particularly pointed out in the claim which. concludes this description. 1

The spring latch in connection with which our improvement is utilized, comprises a base portion 1 and easing or housing 2 the base being provided with fiat oppositely extending ears 3 that are pierced at 4, so that the base may be secured to any suitable door or the like by means of screws. Lips 5 are formed at the ends of the base and are curled inwardly and within these lips flanges 6 extend which project outwardly from the bottom edge of the casing so that it will be readily understood that said base and casing are slidably assembled.
The outer wall at the front end of the casing is bent downwardly and inwardly to provide a beveled nose 7, and a lip 8 is lanced from the base and bent upwardly and between this lip and the inner wall of the nose 7 is confined a coil spring 9 so that it will be clear that the slidable casing will have a resilient movement. In order to prevent any overshooting of the casing any suitable stop 10 is provided at the bottom of the casing which stop abuts against the neighboring lip 5.
The above described spring latch is the same as that shown and described in the application for patent filed by Edgar W. Bassick on even date herewith, Serial No. 643,560 and the particular object of the present improvement is to provide a convenient and eflicient means for operating this latch, and this means we will now describe. v
The rear portion of the base normally extends slightly beyond the rear portion of the casing so as to allow for the play of the latch, and extending from these rear portions are suitably shaped pinch levers 11, 12. In operating the device these levers are grasped between the thumb and finger and pinched together thereby withdrawing the spring latch, and the door may then be opened by merely utilizing these levers after the manner of a knob.
At Figs. 3 and 4 we have shown a pinch lever 13 pivoted at its lower end to a lug 14 extending from the base said lever being extended loosely up through the outer wall of the casing in proximity to a finger stirrup 15 extending from the casing the operation being precisely as in the instance of the construction shown in Fig. 2, it being merely necessary to insert a finger through the stirrup and with the thumb pinch the lever 13 toward the stirrup in order to retract the latch.
