Specification of Letters Patent.
vTo aZZanwm. t may concern.' l
Be i t known that I, PAUL B-.'NAYLOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new vand useful Improvements in Silos; and I do declare the following to' be a full, clear, and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art` to which it appertains' to'make and use the same.
l vThis invent-ion relates to improvements in silos. J
rThe object-,of the invention is to provide asilo having an improved foundation and means for forming an air and water tight lconnection between the lower. ends of the .sides or wooden staves of the silo and the foundation which will permitfthe'expansion and contraction of the silo. f l
With this end in View, the invention consists in the details of construction hereinafter more fully described and elaimed.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a silo constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a cross sectional View on a large scale through one side of the foundation and theadjacent part of the side of the silo; Fig. 3 is a plan' View of a portion ofA pairs of annular binding rods or 'hoops 2 `the ends of the staves by a serles ofstaples l together by 'and 3 on opposite sides Vof the staves as shown. The rods are held in osition near or U-bolts4 which are inserted through the staves and have their 4inner lends engaged with clip .plates 5, said ends having screwed thereon clamping nuts 6. The staves form- .ing the'sides'f the silo are furthersecured pperc andA lower flat 'metal bands or hoops 7.
The silo is supported upon an annular foundation 8 formed of concrete or other -suit-able material the lower portion of which 1s set into the ground to a suitable depth as. shown.. In the upper side of the foundeif/iml4 8 is formed an annular groove-or channel 9 into which'are seated the lower ends of the lower ends of the staves being arranged in the centerV of the groove lor channel as shown.
site sides of the latter to receive a sealing or, wood preserving compound 10 which preferably consists of coal-tar orthe like. .When
the sealing composition has'- beenplaced in the groove or channel onr bothsides of the staves an air and fluidtightseal is formed between the ends of the sta-vesand the founp l, Patented Mar. 19,12. Application led J' une 12,-1911. Serial No. 632,629. i
lhe lchannel is of considerably greater -wldth'than the' thickness of l'the staves thus providing a space on theoppo-v dation and said lower ends ofthe staves are edectually prevented"fro1n rotting. The
filling of coal tar or the like between the staves and the. oppositev sides of the wide channel 9 will permit theexpansion and cont'action of 'the staves forming the sides of V"the s-ilo.
The silo is preferably braced neari its upper end by a series of inclined brace rods 11 the upper ends of which have a loose connection with `the U-bolts 4 of the upper pair of hoops 2` while'their lower ends have a loose connection with stakes 12 driven into the ground adjacent to the outer side of the foundation as shown. By thus loosely connecting the ends of the braces- 1l the latter,
will not interfere with the expansion or contract-ion of the sides of the silo or with the adjusting of the same.v
From the foregoing connection with the accompanying drawings,
the eonstruction'and operation of the lnven-` tion will bereadily understood without re' quiring a moreex'tended explanation.
description taken in.
. Various changesV inl the form, proportion i and the minor details of construction may.
be resorted to without departing from the principle or. sacrificing any of the 'advan-l Vtagesof the rinvention as defined in t r pended claim. .A
Having thus described myinvention', I claimis: y
The herein described 'silo comprising a cylindrical body cdnsisting of upright wooden staves and means for Iholding them together, a foundation of concrete formed in the shape of a ring rising ilpartly above the surface to the ground and aving in its up- 55 i' staves forming the sides of the silov` said Per edge an annular groove Wider. than the vmy hand in presence of two subscribingfviit-- i thickness of said staves, the lower end of the nesses. vbody rest-in ,inthebody of said groove between its si e walls, and a. sealing compound' 5 inthe groove` between'v 'both sldes of the Witnesses:
staves and the Walls ofthe groove. l v E. W. CURTIS,
Ih testimony whereof I have hereunto setl .RAY L. BAILEY.
