, To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARANOE H. CHES- TER, residing at Lebanon, in the county of Lebanon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improve- -ments in Drinking-Troughs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to poultry fountains of the type in which the water is supplied automatically as required from a res- 'ervoir to a drinking vessel proper.
An object of the invention is to provide a fountain of the kind mentioned which is particularly effective for its purpose, in which various of the operating parts are readily detachable, and in which flow of water from the reservoir to the drinking vessel is automatically controlled with great certainty.
Other objects and aims of the invention, more or less broad than those stated above, and which relate to improvements in structural details, will be in part obvious and in part specifically referred to in the course of the following description of the elements, combinations, arrangements of parts, and applications of principles constituting the invention; and the scope of protection contemplated will appear from the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings which are to be taken as a part of'this specification, and in which I have merely shown a preferred form of embodiment of the invention; Figure 1 is a front elevation of a fountain embodying the invention; and Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same on the line 22 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring to the numerals. on the drawings, 1 indicates a hollow supporting mem her, which may be of the general shape shown, and adapted to receive a lamp 2, access to the interior of the member 1 being by way of a door 3, hinged as indicated by 4. Detachably connected to the upper end of the tubular member 1 as by means of bayonet joint 5 is a reservoir 6, which is provided with a shelf 7 for a purpose hereinafter described. The member 1 is cut out at one side as indicated at 8 to permit of the passage therethrough of certain parts which will be hereinafter described. Spaced parallel lugs 9 depend from the bottom of the reservoir, and between these lugs is pivoted, as upon a removable pin. 10, a
trough member 11, which extends beneath the bottom of the reservoir and forwardly through the opening 8 of the member 1. The trough member 11 comprises a bottom wall, side walls 12, and a rear wall 14, the forward end of the trough being open, and the bottom wall at the open end of the trough being bent downward as indicated at 15, for a purpose to be explained. Near its inner end the trough memberll is provided with a weight 16 depending from the bottom wall, and there is a guard 17 depending from the bottom wall of the reservoir adapted to limit the pivotal movement of the trough in one direction. Preferably frictio-nally held in a flanged opening in the bottom wall 'of the reservoir near the inner end of the trough, is a bushing 18, preferably of rubber or the like resilient material, which extends well below the flange of said opening in the reservoir. extends into the reservoir above the bottom thereof, sufficiently to prevent passage of sediment theret hrough, and whose lower: end extends within the bushing short of the outer end thereof, so that the outer end of the bushing may be compressed about the. outer end of the feed tube.
As shown in the drawing, I provide a drinking receptacle proper 20, comprising a cup, which is attached to asupporting member 21 that extends upwardly along the side of thecup and preferably has a slight bend at 22 in wardly of the cup, and thence extends upwardly from the cup, as indicated at 24. This rearward extension 24, which, by the way, is preferably flat, passes between the bottom wall-of the trough 1-1 and a U-shaped member 25 which is attached at the sides of the trough, the said member 25 being long enough so that it may hold the supporting member 24 snugly against the bottom of the trough, while permitting sliding movement 'of the member 24 relatively to the trough.
understood; supposing the reservoir to be filled with water as indicated in Fig. 2, the parts, when there is sufficient water in the cup 20 to overbalance the weight 16, will be in the position of Fig. 2, the inner bottom wall of the trough being held up into contact with the lower edges of the bushing 18, and thereby preventing the feed of water from the reservoir. As the cup 20 is gradually emptied, the weight 16 overbalances the weight of the water in the cup, and the trough turns on the pivot 10, opening the way for feed of water from the reservoir through the feed tube and through the trough, whence it flows to the cup until the weight of the latter again shuts off the feed. The function of the guard member 7 is to prevent access to the cup except as may be necessary for drinking, so that the water in the cup may not be fouled. The lamp 2 may be used in cold weather to prevent freezing.
A cover is provided for the reservoir as shown in Fig. 2 to prevent fouling of the contents, and there is also preferably a bail whereby the device may be carried.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of this invention could be made without departing from the scope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting sense.
It is also to be understood that the language used in the following claims is intended to cover all of the generic and specific features of the invention herein described, and all statements of the scope of the invention, which as a matter of, language, might be said to fall therewithin.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the kind described, a reservoir having a flanged opening, a resilient bushing within said opening, extending beyond the flange of the opening, a feed tube extending within the reservoir above the wall surrounding the opening and extending within said bushing short of the outer end thereof, and a pivoted trough adapted to contact with the outer end of the bushing. In a device of the kind described, a reservoir having a flanged opening, a bushing within said opening, extending beyond the flange of the opening, a feed tube extending within the reservoir above the wall surrounding the opening and extending within said bushing short of the outer end thereof, a pivoted trough adapted to contact with the outer end of the bushing, a weight at one end of said trough, and a cup into which said trough discharges at the other end of the trough.
3. In a device of the kind described, a reservoir having a flanged opening, a bushing Within said opening extending beyond the flange of the opening, a feed tube extending within the reservoir above the wall surrounding the opening and extending within said bushing short of the outer end thereof, a pivoted trough adapted to contact with the outer end of the bushing, a weight at one end of said trough, and a cup into which said trough discharges at the other end of the trough, said cup being detachably connected to said trough.
4. In a device of the kind described, a reservoir, a pivoted trough member having a discharge at one end and having a downwardly bent lip at its discharge end, a U- shaped member attached outside the trough, a flat supporting member extending between the bottom wall of the trough and said U- shaped member, and a cup carried by said supporting member.
5. In a device of the kind. described, a reservoir provided with a guard having a flanged opening, a bushing of resilient material extending beyond the flange of said opening, a feed tube within said bushing extending within the reservoir beyond the wall thereof and extending within the bushing short of the outer end thereof, spaced lugs depending from the bottom of the reservoir, a trough pivoted between said lugs and i charge end, a support slidable between said U-shaped member and the trough, a cup carried by the support, a tubular member beneath the reservoir to which the latter is detachably connected, and a lamp within said tubular member.
