VICTOR RAISIN, 0F PARIS, FRANCE, ASSIGNOR T0 LA CIE. INDUSTRIELLE IDES ALCOOLS DE LARDF-CHE, OF PARIS, FRANCE.
SACCHARIFYING- APPARATUS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VICTOR RAIsIN, a citizen of the Republic of France, and resident of Paris, France, have invented a new and useful Saccharifying Apparatus, which apparatus is fully set forth in the following specification.
This invention relates to an apparatus intended to transform the whole or portion of the woody substance into sugar which is susceptible to fermentation, and other utilizable products. To that end, wood, as sawdust, or in any other form, and whatever be its nature, is treated with an acid particularly sulfurous acid, at a suitable temperature and pressure. The arrangement and proportions adopted for the apparatus for the treatment, insure the regularity and the rapidity of the reaction.
The apparatus in question is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal verticalsection, partly in side-elevation, and Fig. 2 an endelevation, with an end-plate removed.
This apparatus comprises a cylindrical chamber a in which the mixing of the wood and the acid takes place. This chamber is constituted by a drum 6 having two tubesheets 0, 0' secured thereto. A number of mild steel tubes (Z, set in and connecting the two tube-sheets 0, a pass through the said chamber.
The interior of the apparatus may or may not be provided with a protective lining of lead or other acid-resisting material.
At each end of the cylindrical chamber a is arranged an end-sheet c 0 forming endchambers e and e communicating with each other through the tubes (1 and insuring when steam is introduced into the endchambers the uniform heating of the cylindrical chamber a to a suitable temperature for the treatment. As will be explained, the apparatus is rotated without the heating being interrupted and the tubes 03 present a surface against which the wood contacts, so.
that a perfect and uniform transmission of heat to the wood is efiected. An inlet steam- Specification of Letters Patent.

.pipe 70 passing through an opening in the center of the end-sheet 0 introduces live steam into the end-chamber c. A packingbox 70 is provided to prevent the escape of steam around the pipe 70. A baflle-plate 70 spreads the steam from the pipe 70 to cause an even distribution of the same and to prevent excessive impingement of the steam on the tube-sheet 0. An exhaust-pipe 91?. passing through a similar opening and packingbox at the center of the end-sheet c is provided with a radial bend m and a circumferential bend on at the inner end m whereby the exhaust steam may escape or whereby the water of condensation may be forced out by the pressure of the steam.
The apparatus is provided at the end-edge of the drum 5 with annular tracks 2', z" and is supported by the said tracks upon two sets of four rollers j journaled in balancebeams f balanced in U-shaped recesses in the top of standards j The driving is effected by a toothed rack 71, carried by the drum 6 adjacent one track 2' (see Fig. 1), and a toothed pinion g mounted on the spindle f journaled in the standards F, f and carrying fast and loose pulleys f*, f or any other suitable transmission means.
The apparatus is balanced so that its rotation should be uniform without any shocks to the transmission gear.
A manhole 79 having a suitable closable lid 79 is provided in the side of the drum 6 emptying the contents of the drum after the treatment is effected.
The heating can be effected in any other suitable manner, steam being quoted for the sake of example.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
In a saccharifying apparatus, the combination of an air-tight drum comprising a sheet-metal cylinder and tube-sheets, curved end-sheets forming end-chambers with said tube-sheets and each having a central opening, a plurality of tubes passing transversely through said drum and connecting In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
VICTOR RAISIN.
said end-chambers, steam inlet and outlet pipes passing respectively through the center openings of the end-sheets, a stufiingbox for each pipe, a manhole and manhole- 5 cover at the circumference of the drum, a Vitnesses:
baflie-plate at the inner end of the steam in- EMILE LEDRET,
H. O. Come.
let-pipe and means for rotating said drum.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. C.
