EVAPORATING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,541, dated November 19, 1889.
Application filed May 21, 1889. Serial No. 311,578. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. LEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Muncie, in the county of Delaware and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Evaporating Apparatus; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in apparatus for evaporating or concentrating liquids or solutions; and it consists in certain novelty in the construction, arrangement, and combination of the various parts, all of which I will now proceed to point out and describe, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my said invention; Fig. 2, a perspective view of the supports for the evaporating apparatus, said apparatus being removed; Fig. 3, a side elevation of the evaporating apparatus removed from its bearings; and Figs. 4, 5, 6, and '7 are details of various parts of my saidinvention.
Referring to said drawings, A A represent suitable supports or bases having a space between the same, and on which the evaporating apparatus is mounted, as hereinafter de scribed. Said supports are preferably constructed of masonry, but may be made of wood or metal, if so desired.
On top of the base or support A, I secure a casting B, and on the support A a casting B. Said castings are similar in construction, and on each are formed bearings 19 b, in which are mounted grooved rollers 12' b, said rollers forming roller-bearings, fora purpose hereinafter set forth.
0 is an arm or bracket secured to one side of the support A and having formed therein a bearing 0.
Z9 is a bearing secured upon the support a. D is a shaft mounted in said bearings c and b d is a pinion mounted on the inner end of said shaft and located between the rollers 12'. On the outer end of this shaft is mounted a pulley D, which has belt-connection with suitable driving mechanism, which in the present instance is not shown. Any desired power may be used.
E E are hollow cylindrical chambers mounted on the supports. The chamberE is provided with a central annular flange e, which engages with the rollers b on the base A, and the chamber E is provided with a similar annular flange e, which engages with the rollers Z) on the support or base A. For convenience in construction said flanges are preferably formed of cast-metal bands bolted or riveted to the chambers, and may, if desired, be made in two parts. provided at its center with gear-teeth,which form a gear 6 with which the pinion d engages. To the outer end of each of the cylindrical chambers is riveted or otherwisesecured bands F, having an annular flange f. To said flanges are secured heads F F, provided with hinged doors F having steamtight connections with said heads.
To the inner end of each chamber is riveted or otherwise secured a similarly-formed band G, having an annular flange g, to which is secured a head G, having perforations g therein. To the center of each head Gis attached a casting 9 to which is secured one end of a rod G which forms a rigid connection between the two chambers.
II are hollow tubes or pipes having their ends secured in the perforations in the heads and forming a connection between the hollow chambers, said tubes being so attached to the heads that steam-tight joints are made. In the center of the doors F are stuflingboxes I.
K is an induction steam-pipe, which enters the chamber E through its stuffing-box I, said pipe being connected with a suitable source of supply and provided with a valve 70.
L is an exhaust or escape pipe, having its inner end entering the chamber E through its stuffing-box I. Said pipe is supported in the upper end of the arm or bracket 0 and may be arranged to exhaust into a vessel L. When the steam is turned on, it passes into the chamber E, and from said chamber through the hollow tubes I-I into the chamber E and out through the exhaust or escape pipe L, the induction and exhaust pipes being arranged to permit the chambers to revolve. Said chambers being rigidly connected, when the shaft D is rotated its pinion cl, engaging with the gear 6 rotates both of said cut-away side being about over the cen- E ter of the revolving tubes.
N indicates a pipe leading from a reservoir or other source of supply which contains the liquid or solution to be evaporated. Said pipe discharges into the vessel M, and as said vessel fills it overflows on its cut-away side, the
liquid or solution falling upon and passing between and over the revolving heated tubes,
which present a large heating-surface and cause said liquid to be rapidly evaporated. i
The residuum or concentrated liquid falls into a receiving-pan O, which is placed under the tubes H. If desired, said receiving-pan may be permanently fixed and emptied from time i to time, as becomes necessary. It is, how- 5 ever, more convenient to have a removablej pan, as shown.
From the above description the operation I of my said invention will be readily appre-f ciated. It is apparent that it may be usedf for a variety of purposes. It is, however, esi pecially adapted to be used with chemical apparatus employed to evaporate various solutions.
Having thus fully described my said in vention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In an apparatus for evaporatingliquids, the combination, with suitable supports having grooved rollers mounted thereon and two rotatable hollow chambers mounted upon the rollers and having annular flanges engaging with the grooves in said rollers, of independent tubes interposed between and connecting the interiors of said chambers, an inductionheat-supply pipe communicating with one chamber, an exhaust-pipe leading from the other chamber, mechanism for rotating said chambers and interposed connecting-tubes, and a distributing-vessel arranged to discharge upon said tubes, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as shown and described.
2. In an apparatus for evaporating liquids, the combination, with the grooved rollers mounted upon suitable supports A A, the shaft D, carrying the pinion d and mounted upon the support A, of the hollow chamber E, provided with the annular flange e, engaging with the rollers 12' on the support A, the hollow chamber E, having the annular flange e, engaging with the grooved rollers b on the support A and provided with the gear 6 5 with which the pinion d engages, the tubes I-I, rigidly secured to and connecting the interiors of said chambers E E, and over which tubes the liquid to be evaporated is adapted to flow, all constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
