To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES J. HOLLAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in. the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receptacle-Closures, of which the following is a specification. I

My invention relates to improvements in receptacle closures, the object of the invention being to provide a closure for ice caps, water bottles and other similar receptacles which is so constructed as to prevent the removal of the closure, except by an authorized person.

In the care of patients, especially those having fever, or those who have been operated upon, it frequently happens that water is refused such patients for .a certain length of time. During this period, the patients are more or less abnormal, and while craving water, will resort to various subterfuges to obtain the same. As it is necessary in many cases to use ice caps, and Water bottles, patients are liable to remove the closures of such receptacles, and drink the water therein while the nurse or attendant is otherwise engaged.

To absolutely prevent this, my invention was devised, and consists in certain novel features ofconstruction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims. I

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a view in longitudinal section illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2, is a view in section on the line 22 of Fig. 1, but showing the parts in slightly difierent position, and Fig. 3, is a viewv in elevation of my improved key.

While I illustrate my improvements in connection with an ice cap, it is to be understood that it is not limited to this use, but is adapted for various other analogous uses.

1, represents a metal sleeve screwthreaded at one end, and having a rubber sack 2 secured thereon in any approved. manner. The upper end of ring 1 is flared outwardly forming an annular flange 3 against which my improved closure is adapted to bear.

The closure comprises two members 4. and

head 7, and this grooved head 7 is provided I at opposite points with openings 8 adapted to register with openings 9 in the member 4, which constitutes a cap having rotary mounting on member 5. This member or cap 4' has its edges bent or turned under the head 7, so that it cannot be removed from I the head, yet is sufliciently loose to permitthe cap to turn freely on the head, hence, when the plug 5 is in position, any attempt to unscrew the plug by turning the cap 4:, will onlyresult in revolving thecap with- I out turning the plug in the slightest.

To look the cap and the plug together, I

provide a key 10 which comprises a piece of bent wire having inwardly projecting spurs or prongs '11 at its ends adapted to spring into the openings 9, and bear in the grooved head 7, and when the cap is turned and the key so positioned the spursor prongs 11 will spring into the openings 8, when openings 9 register therewith. In such position, the key serves to lock the cap and the plug together, and the closure may therefore be turned to remove it from the receptacle or to replace the same. This key 10 also serves as a bail to facilitate the handling of the receptacle, or may operate as a hanger therefor. It will therefore be noted that until the proper key is employed to lock the cap and the plug together, the closure cannot be removed, and hence a patient cannot remove the closure to get at the contents of the receptacle.

It is to be understood that the key will be in the custody of the nurse or the attendant, so that when the receptacle is once filled with water or ice, it can be safely left with the patient without any danger of the contents being removed.

Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not-limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider ing rotary mounting on myself at liberty to'make such changes and alterations as fairly fall-Within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.-

Having thus described my inveutiomwhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

l. A closure of the character described, comprising a plug, a cap inclosing and havthe outer end of the plug, and a removable device adapted to lock the plug and cap together, substantially as described.

2. A closure of the character described, comprising a plug, a cap inclosing and having rotary mounting on the outer end of the plug, said plug and. said cap having openings adapted to register, and a removable key adapted to be positioned in said 0penings to lock the cap and plug together, substantially as described.

3. A device of the character described, comprising a metal plug having an enlarged head at its outer end, a cap inclosing and having rotary mounting on said head, and key receiving openings in said head and said cap, substantially as described.
