HARRY K. SALMON, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
COMBINED SAW JOINTER, AND GAGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 27, 1912.
Application filed October 10, 1910. Serial No. 586,180.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY K. SALMON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Saw J ointers and Gages, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in combined saw jointer and gage, the object of the invention being to provide an improved tool of this character which is designed for a great many difl'erent uses in connection with sharpening and fitting saws particularly cross cut saws for use, and keepmg them in accurate condition.
A further object is to provide a device of this character which is especially adapted for clamping the file, and which permits a nice adjustment of the gage plate, said adjusting means so constructed and located as to be entirely out of the way of the file when clamped in the device.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a view in side elevation illustrating my improvements. Fig. 2, is a view in elevation of one longitudinal edge of the device. Fig. 3, is a similar view of the other edge of the device. Fig. 4, is a view in side elevation of the opposite side shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 5, is
a view in section on the line 5-5 of Fig. 1.
6, is a fragmentary view in longitudinal section illustrating the gage plate adjusting mechanism. Fig. 7, is a detail perspective view of the gage plate, and Fig. 8, is a similar view of the gage plate adjusting disk.
1, represents the body of the tool which is preferably cast, but maybe otherwise formed provided on one face with three longitudinal flanges 2, 3, and 4 respectively, all of them separated at the center of the body as illustrated in Fig. 1, and said body provided with openings 5 to decrease the weight of the same. On the face of the body, opposite to the flanges 2, 3, and 4, a flange 6 is located. In the central recess portion 7 of the body, a gage plate 8 is located and as -usual is provided with a slot 9 for the reception of the teeth of the saw to be sharpened. An integral tongue 10 is provided on plate 8 and said tongue 10 is provided with a longitudinal slot 11 at its central portion, and with a stud 12 at one side of the slot.
13 is an adjusting disk which is of general circular form, having a central opening 14 to receive a screw 15, the latter having a head at its outer end, and projected through said opening 14 and slot 11, and screwed into the body 1. The disk 13 is provided with a notch or recess 16 to receive the stud 12, and an integral arm 17 is provided on the disk to turn the same. When'this disk is turned, by reason of the engagement of the notched portion 16 with the stud 12, the gage plate is caused to move and may be adjusted to the exact position desired, when the screw 15 Will be tightened to clamp the gage plate at such adjustment. The flange 4 at the edge of the body 1, is provided with screw-threaded bosses 18, through which thumb screws 19 project, and these screws 19 are adapted to clamp a file (not shown) between the ends of the screws and the intermediate flange 3. It will be noted that by reason of the particular gage plate adjusting means that I employ and its location on the body 1, that there is no obstruction in space between the flanges 3, and 4, for the accommodation of a file, and hence the file may be located flat against the body and against flange 3, and clamp by means of the thumb screws 19, so that the file may be effectually used while in this position without danger of slip ing or without injury to any other part 0 the device. It will be further noted that the disk 13 permits of a very sensitive adjustment of the gage plate, a slight change in the position of arm 17 recording a slight change in the position of the gage plate, and allowing the latter the finest of adjustment, and when once adjusted, the screw 15 will securely hold the parts against movement. Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to scour by Letters Patent is:
A device of the character described, comprising a body, three longitudinal flanges tongue, and screwed into the body, a stud fixed to the tongue, said disk having a notch in its face to receive said stud, and an operating arm integral with said disk, whereby the movement of said disk serves to adjust said gage plate, said disk located entirely 15 between two of said flanges, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
