Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEONARD W. SMART, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SASH-CORD FASTENER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEONARD W. SMART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Cord Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
The sash cord fastener which is the subject of the present invention is designed more particularly for windows having vertically pivoted sashes, and the object is to provide a novel and improved sash cord fastener whereby the sash cords may be readily disconnected from the sashes when the latter are to be swung out of the sash frame.
With this in mind my invention resides in the particular construction, arrangement and combination of the several parts to be hereinafter described with respect to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section of the window showing the application of the inven tion. Fig. 2 is'a section on the line 33 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an elevation of the cord socket removed. Fig. 4 is a perspective View showing the device for attaching the sash.
Referring specifically to the drawings, A denotes the upper sash, and B the lower sash of the window. The sashes will be provided with suitable hinge connections (not shown) whereby they may be swung into and out of the window frame C.
Set into the right hand side of the window frame C, at points slightly above the upper edges of the sashes A and B when in their lowered position, are transverse plates 27, said window frame being provided with recesses 28 extending beneath and below the lower edges of said plates 27. The upper right hand sides of the upper and lower sashes B and A are provided with vertical Specification of Letters Patent.

cut-out portions, in which are secured plates 29, as shown in Fig. 2; these plates 29 being provided with intermediate outstanding side pieces 30, which are curved and taper inwardly toward their upper and inwardly bent edges 31. The lower ends of the weight cords 32 are secured in tapering metal thimbles 33, and these thimbles are normally held within and between the side pieces 30* of the socket plates. Each of the thimbles 33 has an upwardly projecting tongue 34, so that when the sashes are in position to be swung on their hinges the thimbles 33 may be dis engaged from the socket plates, and their upwardly extending tongues 34 can then be engaged beneath the lower edge of the transverse plates 27, thus holding them free of the sashes, and in convenient position for reengagement therewith, when the sashes are swung back into their normal positions.
I claim:
The combination with a sash and its weight cord, the former having a recess in its upper edge at one side, of a plate secured within said recess and having intermediate side pieces bent outwardly and curved toward one another to form an upwardly and inwardly tapering socket, a thimble in which the end of the weight cord is fastened, said thimble being adapted for detachable engagement within said socket, and provided with an upstanding lip, and a catch on the window frame engageable by said lip to hold the sash cord when the thimble is disengaged from the socket.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LEONARD W. SMART.
