-' w-wa- 20.19121" To all whom it may concern:
Be it lmown that I, Fnrrz DEIMEL, a subject of the German Emperor, and residing at Berlin, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Im rovements in Frictional Pocket-Igniters, 0 which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to igniters and a primary object is to provide an improved pocket igniter in which sparks are produced by friction and ignite a combustible on a wick.
My igniter comprises apyrophorous body, 2'. e., a so-called sparker, and a scraper arranged movable relatively to one another outside a receptacle which contains the com-' bustible and is normally closed by a hinged cover, and the apparatus for producing sparks is constructed in a very advantageous manner inasmuch as a part of the same, 6. g.
\ the scraper, is attached to one end of a spring -which automatically returns the scraper into its normal position, the other end of the spring being attached securely to the receptacle. I
One illustrative embodiment of my invention is represented by way of example in the accompanying drawing, where Figure 1 shows my igmter in elevation and Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same.
Referring to the drawing, the guide It for the wick having a hinged cover 2' and a tongue or lug 7c is provided on the rece tacle a for the combustible. The holder Fearries the sparker e and is a tube traversing the receptacle a, but may be located outside the same if preferred; "the sparker e is pressed upwardly by the spring 9 against the scraper d the latterpasses through the lug Z attached to the receptacle and through the bent spring I) screwed to the bottom of the receptacle, and is secured in position by the nut c, as clearly shown.
When the igmter is to be used the hinged cap 2' is raised by ushing the lug 7: upward carrying the scraper d and the spring Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed September 1,1919. Serial No. 580,00?
in the direction of t pressed inwardly toward the v 1 the same scrapes thepyrophorous' bcd eand throws or directl conduct's'thefsgiarkis he wick and'fthereby ignites the'combustible thereon.
The pyrophorous body may be of suitablgcomposition, e. .g. cerium and 30%; -iron.f
This igniter v has the advantage that the capcan be opened'and the sparkerio erated with'only onefhand, and that, in a dition,
the full pressure ofthahan'dis utilizedfor the requisite "movement offthe -jscraper, whereby considerable showersof sparks are produced. I
I claiufi:+ .1 f: 1. An ignite: of the 'ch'a acterv described,
comprising in c'ombination, asubstantially.
rectangular receptacle; having a tubular guide for a wick, a hinged cap normally closing the end of the guide, a sprlng-pressed sparker mounted on the receptacle adja-' cent the guide, a spring, having one end secured to the receptacle, substantially parallel with the sides of the receptacle, and
a substantially horizontal scraper carried by the other end of the spring and adapted to scrape the sparker, substantially as;
shown.
2. An' igniter' of the character described,
comprising in combination a substantially rectangular receptacle having a wick-tube, I
an upwardly spring-pressed sparker-mounted on the receptacle adjacent the tube, a spring, having one end secured to the re ceptacle, substantially parallel with the'sides of the receptacle, and a substantially hori zontal;- scraper carried by the other end of the spring and adapted to scrape the sparker, substantially as shown.
In testimony whereof, I aflix ture in the presence of Witnesses:
