commrnn CIGAR corrnn am) Lrcn'rnn' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 22, 1913.
Application filed March 16, 1912. Serialllio. 584,200.
To all IF/107)), it may concern:
lie it known that I, Gnmsrran Baomnon, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Hanover, in Germany, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Combined Cigar Gutters and Lighters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention essentially consists in com bining a cigar cutter with an automatic lighter of the cerium-iron or equivalent type in such manner that the operation of cutting a cigar is automatically followed by the ignition of a burner for lighting the cl ar.
brie form of construction of this com-v bined cutter and lighter is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which-- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device, and Fig. 2 a vertical section thereof. Fig. 3 is a side view of the lighter, by itself, and Fig. i a vertical section of the part containing the cutter.
In its external shape the apparatus illustrated resembles a miniature Browning pistol, the cigar cutter being arranged partly in the butt a.
The cutter comprises an angular knife 6 pivoted to the butt a at m, with its cutting edge inside the butt and its back normally protruding approximately in the position of a pistol trigger, the knife being held in this normal position by a spring d. The butt a has a hole a for insertion of a cigar end, placed so that by pressing the knife the inserted tip of the cigar can be cut off. A casing 6, closed atthe back, is attached to the top of the butt- (1 and incloses a fuel container f which can be pushed in from the front and may contain cotton wool or the like soaked with benzin. The container 1 is fastened by means of a screw stopper 9 inserted into the filling aperture through a hole in the rear wall of the casing 6, so that the screw locks the container to the casing. A small tube p fixed inside the container contains a spring g, which thrusts a piece of cerium-iron n to the front end of the said tube 1). The container f is integral with a burner 0 which projects from the front end of the casing, when the latter is open.
The casing e is normally closed by a cap it, which is pivoted at i to lo on the casing, and contains a toothed iction wheel h centered at z and located below the burner 0 and in front of the tube 1). This cap can rock downward about its pivot, so as to expose the front of the casing and a spring 8 tends to rock the cap downward in this manner, and rotate the wheel h, but the cap is normally held in closing position bv a double-armed lever or catch Z, which is pivoted at m and rests on the upper part of the knife I), so that the spring cl, acting on the knife, thrusts the front arm of the lever Z against a notch at the bottom of the cap.
When the knife is actuated for cutting, it lifts the rear arm of the lever Z and lowers the front arm, so that the cap can swing down. At the same time the friction Wheel it rotates in contact with the cerium-iron n and produces sparks so that at the end of the cutting operation, when the burner o is exposed, the vapor issuing from the burner is ignited and produces a flame at which the cigar can be lighted.
\Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patentof the United States is 1. A combined cigar cutter and lighter comprising a fuel container, a burner, a hinged cap normally covering said burner, a frictional spark producing device, adjacent said burner. a spring for collectively opening said cap and actuating said spark producing device, a catch for retaining said cap in closed position, and a cigar cutter comprising a movable blade carrying 1ncmber adapted to release said catch in the course of the cutting operation.
2. A combined cigar cutter and lighter comprising a barrel-shaped casing. a fuel container in said casing. a hinged cap for closing said casing. a burner on said container, a frictional spark producing device adjacent said burner, a spring for collectively opening said cap and actuating said spark producing device, a catch for retaining said cap in closed position, a butt-shaped holder attached to said casing and having a hole for insertion of a cigar end, a piv oted cigar cutting knife working in said holder, and a spring bearing on said knife so that the knife back normally protrudes from said holder and the knife holds said catch in operative position.
3. A combined cigar cutter and lighter comprising a barrel shaped casing, having a hole, a fuel container having a filling aperture in said casing, a screw stopper adapted to ass the hole in. said casing into the a said ling aperture,. to lock the container to the casing, a burner, a. hinged cap normally covering said burner, a frictional spark producing device adjacent said burner, a spring for collectivel opening said cap and actuating said spa producin device, a catch for retaining said cap in c osed position, and a cigar cutter comprising a mov- 10 able blade carrying member adaptedto release said catch in the course of the cutting operation.
In witness whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
one. BA-UMBACH.
