Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed September 28, 1911. Serial No. 651,844.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALFRED D. OW'EN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Fresno, in the county of Fresno and State of California, have invented a new and useful Compass, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to a beam compass for making circles on plates, crockeryware, and other hard substances which will not mar or scratch the surface of such plates or dishes at the center of such circles. I attain these objects by the mechanism described below, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which the figure represents a side view of the compass showing the stand on which such compass operates, and the pen used therewith.

In said figure A is a straight stiif rod with an extension A bent to form, in connection with rod A, an L. This rod can be round or cornered. In my construction I prefer to use a round stiii' wire.

H is a post adjustable longitudinally on A, and it can be firmly fastened to A by means of set screw 9. Post H is preferably constructed of a short round rod from a; to inch in diameter, having a hole near the lower end thereof through which rod A passes. Post H terminates at the bottom with pivot 1'.

K is an upright post having hole n perpendicularly extending downward from the top in which pivot 1' fits with a running fit. Post K terminates with a base, forming a stand or support, and on the under side of the base of K is a rubber covering or rubber cup, a. The purpose of the rubber covering a is to keep the base fromslipping when placed on smooth surfaces. Instead of rubber, any adhesive substance can be used. If a rubber cup is used, it may be an improvement to wet it immediately before using it and when using it to press it gently on the object on which it is to stand to exclude the air thereunder.

D is a block adjustable longitudinally on extension A and which can be rigidly fastened to extension A by means of set screw 0. Block D contains hole 2 approximately parallel to the hole through which extension A passes into which hole 2 a pen 6 can be inserted and fastened by means of set screw (Z. Hole 2 can be uniform in diameter its entire length so that pen 6 is adjustable longitudinally therein.

To use this compass, stand K should be placed on the plate or article on which the circle is to be described in the center of such proposed circle. Then adjust handle H on rod A from the point of the pen the length of the radius of the desired circle. Then insert pivot r in hole n, and by grasping post H between the thumb and forefinger and giving it a slight twist, the point 70 will describe a true circle having post H as the center. mar the plate or object on which it is used.

What I claim as new and upon which I desire Letters Patent is:

The combination of a support K having a perpendicular round hole 11. in the top thereof and terminating at the bottom with a base covered with an adhesive substance; a rod bent in the shape of an L; a pen adjustable longitudinally on an extension A of said rod, and an upright post H adjustable longitudinally on the other branch of the rod A said branch forming the horizontal extension of said L the other extension being held upright, said post H terminating at the lower end with a pivot which fits with a running fit in said hole n, all substantially as described.
