CHARLES W. SHONK, OF MAYWOOD, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR T0 CHARLES W. SHONK COMPANY, OF MAYWOOD, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 20, 1912.
Application filed September 7, 1909. Serial No. 516,547.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES W. SHONK, a citizen of the United States, residing in Maywood, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Collapsible Sheet-Metal Signs and Can-Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to sheet metal signs and display racks.
The object of my invention is to provide a combined sheet metal sign and display rack for holding and displaying to View canned goods, which will be of a simple, efficient and durable construction, capable of being manufactured at small cost, and which may be collapsed or folded into small compass and snug and comp-act form to adapt it for convenient shipment, and from which the cans of fruits, vegetables and other products may be conveniently dispensed.
My invention consists in the novel construction of parts and devices and in the novel combination of parts and devices herein shown and described, and more particularly specified in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a combined sign and can display holder embodying my invention, and Figs. 2 and 3 are vertical sections on lines 2-2 and 3 3 respectively of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a plan view, partly in horizontal section. Fig. 5 is an enlarged detail vertical sectional view. Fig. 6 is a detail, horizontal section on line 6-6 of Fig. 5 and Fig. 7 is a detail view showing the sign and can holder knocked down or collapsed into compact form for shipment.
In the drawing, A represents a sheet metal sign, preferably of rectangular shape, and having a central sign space or panel a to receive the printed, lithographed or ornamental sign matter, and provided with a marginal flange a and channel a to receive a stiffening frame B, preferably of wood, the frame being secured to the sign by leg bolts or screws Z), and shelf bolts or screws 6 and by nails or screws 6 extending through the flange a into the wood frame.
The removable legs D, preferably four in number, and projecting in pairs on opposite sides of the sign, are provided with flanges cl, having angle slots 12 therein to receive the bolts or screws Z), the flange cl fitting between the sign A or frame B, and the heads 0r nuts of the bolts 6 thus firmly and securely and at the same time removably securing the legs D to the sign.
The can holding shelves F are of sheet metal, and each provided with a front flange f and deeper end flanges 7, having angle slots f therein to receive the bolts 6 the end flanges f fitting between the frame B and the heads or nuts of the bolts 6 thus firmly attaching the shelves removably to the sign or its frame. Y
The sheet metal sign A is provided with display openings A through which one'or more cans on each of the shelves F may be disclosed to View, while the others remain hid from view by the panel or sign matter portion a of the sign. The sign A is preferably furnished with six display openings A or one at each end of each shelf F, the can holding shelves being preferably three in number. Each of the display openings A in the sign is preferably slightly less in width than the diameter of the can, thus preventing the can from passing through the opening. The cans are dispensed from the portion of the shelves F between the openings A so that as the cans are sold from my improved sign and can holder, the same does not present a broken array of cans so long as enough remain to fill the display openings.
In packing, knocking down or collapsing my improved sign and can holder for shipment, the legs D and shelves F are simply removed and packed flat against the sign A and within the frame B, the shelves F being just long enough to fit snugly between the end pieces of the frame, all of which will be readily understood from Fig. 7 of the drawmg.
I olaim 1. The combined sheet metal sign and can display holder, comprising a sheet metal sign having a marginal flange, and provided wlth a plurality of can display openings, a stiffening frame fitting within the marginal flange of the sign and secured thereto, leg bolts extending through said frame and having heads and nuts, removable legs having flanges furnished with slots to receive said leg bolts, shelf bolts extending into said frame and having heads and nuts, and removable shelves having end flanges furnished With angle slots to receive said shelf extending therethrough and removable legs bolts, substantially as specified.
2. The combination With a sheet metal sign having can display openings therein,
having slots to receive said leg bolts, shelf bolts extending into said frame, and removable can holder shelves having slots to receiilre said shelf bolts, substantially as specifiec.
CHARLES W. SHONK;
lVitnesses EDMUND AnoooK, PEARL ABRAMS.
