PEARL V. PARE/ISH, OF NOWATA, OKLAHOMA.
CLOTHES-WRINGER CLAMP.V
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PEARL V. PARRISH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Nowata, in the county of llowata, State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in ClothesVringcr Clamps, and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invent-ion, such as will enable ot-hers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
rThis invention relates tcclamps, more particularly to clamps for clothes wringers, and has for its object to provide a clamp that will secure the wringer to its support without mutilating the support, novel means being provided for more readily applying and removing the clamp fro-in the wringer than usual.
lith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, itbeing understood that various modifications in the minor details of construction may be made within the scope of the appended claims.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the wringer with the clamps applied. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the wringer' with the clamps applied. Fig. 3 is an enlarged side elevation of the clamps in closed position and dotted in open position. Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 4 4, Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 5-5, Fig. 3. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary sectional view taken on the line 6 6, Fig. 3. Fig. 7 is a fragmentary perspective view showing t-he mounting of the slide board. Fig. 8 is a fragmentary view in elevation showing the lever in the position it occupies when the clamp is open.
Referring now to the drawing, the numeral 10 designates an ordinary clothes wringer and the numeral 11 the cross board of a washing machine upon which the wringer is supported. The clamps are arranged upon the opposite uprights of the wringer frame and are each identical in construction so that it will be herein necessary to describe in detail but one of the clamps. The clamp consists of a jaw 12 adapted to engage the front side of the wringer upright, or in other words that side of the wringer upright toward a person whenturning the wringer rolls. 12 is formed from a single fiat blank of material and is provided at its lower end with a hook 13 which engages the edge of the washing machine cross board 11. One longit-udinal edge of the jaw is rounded as shown at 14 so as to present no sharp corners to lacerate the hands of the operator. The opposite longitudinal edge of the jaw is provided with an oblong rabbet 15 which engages the cross board of the wringer as shown. Projecting laterally from this'edge of the jaw is a pointed tooth 16, this tooth being adapted to penetrate the upright of the wringer frame so as to anchor the jaw in position. The jaw is further provided at approximately its central portion with an opening 17 through which a pivot pin 18 is engaged, the ends of this pivot pin extending slightly beyond the sides of the jaw.
A. draw bar 19 is provided with a hooked extremity 20, this hooked extremity being of sufiicient size to loosely receive the jaw 12 and being further provided with openings 21 which receive the ends of the pivot pin 1S. It is thus seen that the draw bar is capable of a slight rocking movement upon the jaw.
A jaw 22 is provided for engagement with the rear face of the upright, which is away from a person turning the wringer rolls. rlhis jaw is triangular in contour and is provided at its lower outer corner with a hook 28 which engages the adjacent edge of the washing machine cross board, the base edge 24 of the jaw bearing upon the top face of the cross boa-rd as shown. The inclined cuter edge of the jaw is rounded as shown at 25 so that no sharp edges are presented and the vertical edge of the jaw is provided with a pair of oblong rabbets 26 and 27 that engage the cross pieces of the wringer frame. Sharp pointed teeth 28 are arranged upon the vertical edge of the jaw and penetrate the upright of the wringer. An inclined slot 29 is formed in the jaw so as to lessen the weight thereof. For connecting this jaw to the draw bar so that movement of the latter will draw the jaws together and cause the pointed teeth thereof to penetrate the upright of the wringer, a lever 30 is provided, this lever having a laterally projecting bifurcated head 31 at its upper end, the branches of which engage the opposite side faces of the jaw 22 and are provided with inturned lugs 32 which meet within a circular opening 33 formed in the jaw, these lugs being axially bored to re ceive a rivet 3st which holds the lever upon the jaw. Arranged in one of the branches of the lever head is an opening 35, this opening receiving a pivot pin 36 carried by the draw bar, the extremity of this pivot pin projecting considerably beyond the inner face of the branch and working in an arcuate rabbet 37 formed in the side face of the jaw, this pin working in the rabbet guiding the lever evenly in its rocking movement. It is evident that when the lever is rocked to above horizontal position, the pivot pin in the draw bar will be disposed at the upper end of the arcuate rabbet, which end nearly overlies the pivot pin ot' the lever so 'that the draw bar will be shoved i'orwardly and thus torce the jaw l2 away :trom the jaw 22, this movement liberating the jaws from the wringer upright' `When the lever is rocked downward to its operative position, the pivot pin ott the draw bar is disposed at the lower end of the arcuate rabbet which end is disposed to one side of the pivot pin of the jaw 22 so that the draw bar will be drawn rearwardly, thus causing the jaw l2 to be drawn in the direction of the jaw 22 and the teeth of both jaws penetrated into the material ot the wrii'iger upright. lflfhtn the jaws are in this position, the hooks thereof engage without mutilating the cross board of the washing machine. 'The lever 30 of the jaw is provided in its inner face with a rabbet 38 which engages the rounded inclined edge of the aw 22 when the lever is depressed, this construction permittingof the handle lever being snzxgly engaged upon the outer edge of the jaw so as to economize in space. Insoinnch as these jaws engage the lower portions ot the wringer uprights, it is evident that a slide board for the wringer must be provided. The slide board in this instance is designated by the numeral 239 and is provided adjacent its edges with brackets l0 having openings ell adjacent their ends which receive pins 4t2 carried by the lower cross piece of the wringer as shown. This slide board is arranged upon that side of the wringer adj acent to the levers of the jaws and permits of the clothes freely sliding from the rolls of the wringer into the tub designed for their reception.
Vhat is claimed is l. A wringer clamp comprising a pair of jaws engageable with opposite sides of a wringer upright, said jaws having wringer penetrating` teeth arranged on their edges, a pivoted link connecting the jaws, and a lever pivotally mounted on one of the jaws and loosely connected to said connecting link, said lever operating to rock said link whereby to move apart or draw together the jaws in mounting or releasing the clamp.
Q. A wringer clamp, comprising a pair of jaws adapted to be engaged upon opposite sides of the u finger upright, a draw bar pivotally connected at one end to one oit' the jaws, a handle lever fulcrumed upon the other jaw, and pivotally connected to the free end of said draw bar, the actuation of said handle lever causing` the draw barV to spread apart or draw together the jaws for releasing or locking the same to the wringer.
3. A wringer clamp, comprising a `pair of jaws adapted to engage the opposite sides of a wringer upright, said jaws having anchoring means arranged upontheir inner edges, a draw bar pivotally connected to one ot the aws, a handle lever having` a laterallyextending head pivotally connected to the other jaw, the free end of said draw bar being pivotally connectedto said lever head, the pivot of said draw bar working in an arcuate rabbet in the underlying aw and operating to evenly guide the lever in itsrocking movement, said lever operating through the instrumentality of the draw bar to spread apart or draw together the jaws.
In testimony whereof, I atlix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
