IMPROVEMENT IN TRCK-CLEARER FOR STREET-CARS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom tt may concern.-
Be it known that I, J AMES A. Moamsox, of Bra- .dys Bend, in the count-y of Armstrong and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Street-Cars; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming pagt of this specilication.
This invention relates to a sweeping-attachment for street-cars, and consists in the improvement hereinafter specified.
vFigure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of my improved car, and
Figure 2 is partly a plan -view and partly a horizontal section.
Similar letters of referenceindicate corresponding parts.
A represents the platform or oor of the car, and
B the fra-ming for supporting the same on the axles.
These may be of any improved construct-ion, except the longitudinal stringers O, which I prefer to bend inward between the axles, as shown at D, to afford bearings inside the wheels E for the shaft I?.
For propelling the ear by hand-power, I place on one or both the axles G, cog-wheels H, and between them, on the shaft F, I place an intermediate wheel, I, gearing with both.
The shaft F of this wheelcarries the wheels E, one
at each-end, with which the wheels K ou the shaft L gear.
This latter shaft carries a tiller-wheel, M, attached to it at the center, and rising up through a slot in the platform, allowing it to work freely. To this'tillerwheel I propose to apply the hand-power for propelling the car-wheels while sit-ting on the platform.
The track-clearing apparatus consists of the vertical vibrating brushes N mounted in the short armsO, pivoted to supports P above the rails, and caused to vibrate across the rails by the reciprocating toothed rods Q, connected by crank-pins to the wheels E, and gearing-with the circular toothed rear ends of the said short arms.
These brushes are intendedto be applied to both ends of the ear, and those on each side are connected to one wrist-piu on the wheel E by the rods' Q. In this way a constant vibratory motion is imparted to the. brushes when the ear is in motion.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-` The combination, with a street or other car, of the brushes N, suspended from any suitable support above the rails, and arranged for vibration, as described, and the reciprocating toothed rods gearing therewith, and connected to the wheels E, substantially as specified.
Witnesses: JAS. A. MORRISON.
