CABLE-CAR FENDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 425,049, dated April 8, 1890.

To LZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. RHODES, of Kansas City, Jackson county, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cable-Oar Fenders, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to improvements in fenders for cable-railway cars; and it consists in the novel construction hereinafter set forth and' described.
Figure l is a side elevation of a cable car with my improved fender attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the fender detached. Fig. 3 is a detached detail view of the guide bar and wheels. Fig. 4 is a detached detail view showing the manner in which the guide-wheel and guide-bar are attached to the bed-plate.
Referring to the drawings by letter and fi gure, A represents my improved fender, B the upper supporting-bar, and C the lower supporting-bar thereof. These are provided with upright bars f. Said bars f are attached to horizontal bars B and C in such a manner as to compose a substantial fender.
Passing across and connecting the two sides of the fender are braces c and b. These are keyed or otherwise rigidly secured to the bed-plate E, said bed-plate E being hinged at d in such a manner as to allow the fender to oscillate in an upward or downward movement when the cars are moving over uneven grades. The bed-plate E is attached to the truck-frame l or to the car-floor 2 by means of king-bolt g2, my preferred method being to attach it to the truck-frame.
The guide-bar G is designed 'to move in the grip-slot, while the wheels D have their bearing one 011 either side of the said grip-slot,
(running on the slot-rai1,) thus keeping the fender A at the same level from the track all the time. By having said guide-bar G to run into the grip-slot the fender is kept directly in front of the cars while going around curves, &c. The said fender, being pivoted at E by means of said king-bolt g2, gives it an easy swinging motion. The support a is formed integrally with the upper fender-bar B and forms a bearing for the bed-plate E at its outward extremity. The guide-bar G is secured to bed-plate E by means of shoulder-bolt g and nut g. The end portion H, which forms a part of the guide-bed E and hinged thereto at d, can be made in any desired shape and of sufficient thickness, as found necessary, my preferred shape, however,being as illustrated in Eig. 2.
Having thus described my invention, that which I claim, and desire to be protected in by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
l. A cable-railway-car fender having the hinged bed-plate E and provided at its forward end with a supporting Wheel or wheels and a guide-bar adapted to extend through 'the grip-slot, substantially as described.
2. A cable-railway-car fender with a hinged bed-plate E, attached to the car by means of a king-bolt, as and for the purposes herein fully described.
3. In a cable-railwaycar fender, a guidebar and adj usting-wheels located on each side of said guide-bar and resting on the slot-rails, as and for the purpose herein fully described and set forth.
