H. HARSEY. TUBPENTINB OUP. Anmoumn Hmm 1119.2. 1911.
Patented Feb. 13, 1912.
HAS'KELL HARSEY, OF ANDALUSIA, ALABAMA.
TURPENTINE-CUP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 2, 1911.
Patented Feb. 13, 1912. Serial No. 641,972.
To all whom *it may concern:
Be it known that J, HASKELL HARSEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Andalusia, in the county of Covington and State of Alabama, have invented new and useful Improvements in Turpentine-Cups, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to turpentine cups, and has for an object to rovide, means whereby the cup can be readily attached to or removed from the tree.
Another object of the inventio-n is to provide means for securely holding the cup against accidental displacement.
In the drawing, forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views,-Figure 1 is a perspective view of the cup showing the application of the same to a tree. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the cup taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a vertical section on t-he line 3 3 of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a side view showing the retaining element and illustrating its application to the cup.
The turpentine cup as herein constructed includes a combined gutter and attaching member 1, which may be secured to the tree by such fastening devices as the nails 2, or the like. This'member is provided with a relatively movable portion 3, and the side guiding and guard flanges 4.
The cup member 5 is provided with a back portion 6 which extends upwardly above the plane of the to of the cup as shown at 7 being adapted or extension beneath the hereinbefore described relatively movable portion 3 of the member 1.. The cup member is provided with end walls 8 which are disposed below the plane of the side guard flanges 4 of the member 1. The member l is provided with pivoted hooks 8 which extend downwardly in the direction of the cup member 4:. These hooks are provided with tongues 9 of a downwardly decreasing width so that each tongue is substantially of wedge formation. The inclined surface 10 of the tongue is provided vintermediate of length with a retaining concavity l1. 5I- 1 zottglly disposed eyes l2 extend from dit@ 0x16 the cup 4. These copies of this N eyes are disposed below the plane of the portion 3, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawing, and are disposed in the path of movement of the hooks.
The construction is such that the tongues of the hooks can be inserted through the eyes and incident to the provision of the surface 10 the members 1 and 4, respectively, will be moved relatively so that the end walls 8 will be frictionally engaged with the lower edges of the guard flanges 4 of the member l to effect a tight closure therebetween and thereby prevent the accidental waste of the sap on its passage in the direction of the cup. The relatively movable portion 3 is provided with a surface 13 which extends downwardly in the direction of the cup so as to effectively direct the sap thereinto.
By providing the tongue members of the hooks with the concavities hereinbefore described, it will be seen that the upper curved portions of the eye members will .be engaged 1n said concaifities so that the hooks will be held positively against movement.
I claim 1. In a device of the character described, a gutter having a relatively movable portion, a cup having a portion disposed beneath the said relatively movable portion, and means connecting the gutter with the cup.
2. In a device of the charactendescribed, a gutter having a relatively movable portion, a cup having a portion disposed beneath the said relatively movable portion, and means det-achably connecting the gutter with the cu 3. A device of the character described comprising a gutter member, a cup member disposed therebeneath, hooks carried by the gutter member and provided with substantially wedge shaped tongues, and eye members carried by the cup and adapted to receive the tongues of the hooks.
In testimony whereof I aiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
HASKELL HARSEY.
