Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 7, 1911.
Serial No. 612,883.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT T. JENNEY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of De Pere, in the county of Brown and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Earth-Auger, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to earth angers, and it has for its object to provideone which may be manufactured at very little expense, and which may be readily adjusted for boring holes of diiierent diameters.
Additional objects of the invention will appear in the following complete specification, in which the preferred form of my invention is disclosed.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation showing my improvement; Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a perspective view showing the combined shank and the yoke member; Fig. tis a perspective view showing one of the arms which are secured to the plates; and Fig. 5 is a sectional view on the line 55 of Fig. 2.
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that a shank 10 is provided, which in cross sect-ion has a web 11, with flanges 12 at each end. This shank member 10 is integral with a curved yoke member 13, which has at each side a longitudinally disposed guideway 14, with channels 15, disposed below, orifices 16 extending through the yoke member 13 at the said channels 15. To each of the plates 17 there is secured an arm 18, having an elongated guide 19, which is adapted to be disposed in one of the guideways 14:, there being a flange 20 on each of the arms 18 disposed below and spaced from the guides 19, these flanges 20 being adapted to be disposed against the underside 21 of the yoke member 13. In the arms 18 there are orifices 22, which are adapted to register with the orifices 16. The arms 18 have flanges 23 with orifices 24, by which they are secured to the plates 17. The handle 25 has a slot 26, in which the web 11 is disposed, the flanges 12 being disposed at opposite sides of the said handle 25. Bolts 27 are disposed through orifices in the handle 25, the bolts extending through the slot 26 and also through the orifices 28 in the web member 11. Washers 29 and nuts 30 are provided for these bolts 27. By this means the shank 10 is held securely in place on the handle 25.
The guides 19 on the arms 18 are adapted to slide in the guideways 14, to positions where the plates 17 will be disposed at a predetermined distance from each other, and'at desired positions relatively to the shank 10. When this has been done bolts 31 are disposed through the orifices 16 in the yoke member 13, and through the orifices 22 in the arms 18 disposed at the opposite sides of the yoke member. The bolts 31 are engaged by nuts 32, by which means the arms 18 are held against and in position relatively to the yoke member 13.
It will readily be understood that the orifices 22 may be disposed at any desired distance from each other, and that the orifices 16 in the yoke member may also be disposed as desired relatively to each other, so that they will register with the orifices 22, when the arms are moved to positions where the plates 17 will be disposed to work most effectively when boring a hole of a predetermined diameter.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In an earth auger a yoke member having two guideways, one at each side, two plates adjustable relatively to each other and to the yoke member, each of the plates having an arm with a guide and a flange, the guides being adapted to be disposed in the guideways respectively, and the flanges being adapted to be disposed edge to edge and against a surface of the yoke member, and means for securing the arms to the yoke member in adjusted positions.
