GATE.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLIE E. BUoK- HALT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Enterprise, in the county of Coffee and State of Alabama, have invented a new and useful Gate, of which the following is a specification.
It is the object of the present invention to provide a gate-supporting frame of novel and improved form, and to provide novel means whereby the gate, from a distance, may be unlatched from a closed position, swung into an open position, latched in an open position, unlatched from its open position, swung into a closed position, and latched in its closed position.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings,-Figure 1 shows the invention in perspective; Fig. 2 is a top plan of the gate; Fig. 3 is a side elevation of one of the supporting posts; and Fig. 4; is a side elevation of the post with which the gate engages when in closed position.
In carrying out the invention there is provided as a primary and fundamental element, a gate post 1, to one side of which is extended an outstanding sill 2, adapted to protrude across the roadway. Side sills are hinged to opposite sides of the sill 2, and extend in opposite directions, in alinement, from the gate post 1. Removable braces 4 unite the sills 2 and 3, these braces 4 serving to maintain the proper relative positions between the sills.
Fixed to and rising from the sills 3, adjacent the ends thereof, are guide posts 5, provided at their upper ends with outstanding arms 6, suitably braced, as shown at 7. Between one of the guide posts 5 and the gate post 1, there is a supplemental post 8 attached to one of the sills 3. .Between this supplemental post 8 and the guide post 1, and also attached to the said sill 3, is a stub post 9. The gate 10 is hinged to the gate post 1, as shown at 11. The gate 10 includes a top bar 12, a bottom bar 1 1, and end bars Specification of Letters Patent.

15 and 16, there being a post'17, connecting the bars 12 and 14, between the members 15 and 16, suitable diagonally disposed braces 18 depending from the ends of the post 17, to the corners of the gate.
Pivoted to one of the braces 18, is a latch 19, adapted to engage with a suitable keeper 20, upon a post 21, fixed to the outer end of the sill 2. The latch 19 operates beneath a suitable guide 22, secured to the member 16 of the gate.
The top bar 12 of the gate 10 carries a pivoted arm 23, and between the arm 23 and the hinged end of the gate 10, there is a spring arm 24:. Hinged, as shown at 25, to the posts 1 and 8, are operating members 26.
Pivotally carried by the upper end of the stub post 9, is a latch 27, adapted to be engaged by a keeper 28 upon the element 17 of the gate 10.
A crotch line 28 is provided, the crotch line 28 being connected with the latch 19, as shown at 29. The crotch line 28 is also secured to the pivoted arm 23, as shown at '30, the crotch line being thence connected to the spring arm 24:, as shown at 31. The crotch line diverges into branches 32 and 33. The branch 33 is secured to the operating member 26 which is hinged to the post 8, as shown at 34:. Thence, the branch 32 of the crotch line passes over a sheave 35, journaled for rotation upon the top of the post 8, the branch 32 of the crotch line being thence carried over a sheave 36, mounted upon the arm 6 of one post 5, the free end of the branch 32 depending, as shown at 37. The other branch 33 of the crotch line 28' is engaged, as shown at 38 with the free end of the operating member 26 which is hinged to the post 1. Thence, the branch 33 passes over a sheave 39, journaled for rotation upon the post 1, the said branch 33 being thence carried over a sheave 40 supported by the arm 6 of the other post 5, the free end of the branch 33 depending from the sheave 10, as shown at 41. Secured to the crotch line 28 at a point adjacent the branching of the crotch line 28 into its elements 32 and 33, is a short line 12, the line 42 being connected with the latch 27 which is carried by the stub post 9.
Presupposing that the gate is to be opened by the manipulation of the end 37 of the crotch line, the operation is as follows. When the end 37 of the crotch line is drawn upon, the branch 32 of the crotch line, pass- I ing over the sheaves 36 and 35, will elevate the operating member 26 which is hinged. to the post 8, tightening the crotch line proper 28, the spring arm 24 being put under tension, and the pivoted arm 23 being tilted, whereby the latch 19 will be raised out of engagement with the keeper 20. The tension upon the crotch line 28 will serve to swing the gate 10 laterally. At the same time that the arm 26 which is upon the post 8, is elevated, the short line 42 will be drawn taut, raising the latch 27, so that when the gate 10 is swung into an open position, the keeper 28 will be engaged by the latch 27 the gate 10 being thus held in open position. Obviously, by drawing upon the end 41 of the crotch line, the branch 33 of the crotch line will move through the sheaves 4:0 and 39, tilting the operating member 26 which is attached to the gate post 1, the operation "hereinbefore described being repeated, and the gate being swung into an open position. It is to be noted that when the gate is swung into an open position, the spring arm 24 will extend rearwardly, beyond the plane defined bythe posts 8 and 1. Therefore, when the gate is locked in an open position, the gate may be swung into a closed position, by drawing upon either of the extremities 37 and 41 of the crotch line, the spring arm 24 swinging the gate readily and quickly to a closed position. When either of the branches 32 or 33 are drawn upon, to swing the gate into closed position, the short line 42 will elevate the latch 27 thus setting'the gate free. When the gate is swung into closed position, the latch 19, without attention from the operator, will ride over, and engage with the striking member 20 which is carried by the post 21.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In a device of the class described, a
supporting structure; a gate hinged thereto; a.latch upon the gate, adapted to hold the gate in closed position; a pivotally mounted arm upon the gate; a resilient arm upon the gate; a latch upon the supporting structure, adapted to engage the gate to hold the same in open position; operating members hinged to the supporting structure. and'projecting in a common plane therefrom; a flexible member secured to the gate-carried latch, the pivoted arm on the gate, and to the spring arm on the gate, the flexible member being connected with the latch which is carried by the supporting structure; the said flexible member having branches connected with the operating members, the said branches extended in opposite directions, upon both sides of the gate.
2. A device of the class described comprising a supporting structure; a gate hinged thereto; a latch upon the gate adapted to hold the gate in closed position; a latch upon the supporting structure, adapted to hold the gate in open position; an outstanding arm upon the gate, adapted to protrude beyond the supporting structure, when the gate is in open position; operating members hingedly connected with the supporting structure, and projecting toward each other; a flexible member secured to the gate-carried latch, to the latch which is upon the supporting structure, and to the arm, said flexible member having branches connected with the operating members, and extended in opposite directions upon both sides of the gate.

In a device of the class described, a gate; a latch pivoted thereto, and adapted to hold the gate in closed position; a spring arm carried by the gate; a latch mounted upon the supporting structure, and adapted to hold the gate in open position; an operating member hinged to the supporting structure; and a flexible member secured to both latches and to the arm, and to the operating member, said flexible member being carried laterally over the supporting structure, to one side of the gate.
4. In a device of the class described, a supporting structure; a gate hinged thereto; a
'latch upon the gate, adapted to hold the gate in closed position; a latch upon the supporting structure, adapted to hold the gate in open position; an operating member hinged to the supporting structure for vertical swinging movement; and a flexible element connected with both latches and with the operating member, the flexible element being carried laterally to one side of the gate.
5. In a device of the class described. a supporting structure; a gate hinged thereto: a latch pivoted upon the gate, and adapted to hold the gate in closed position; an arm pivoted to the gate; a spring arm upon the gate; a latch upon the supporting structure, adapted to engage the gate to hold the gate in open position; a vertically swinging operating member carried by the supporting structure; and a flexible element-connected with both latches and with both arms and with the operating member, said flexible element being carried laterally, to one side of the gate.
