Specification of Letters I'atent.
Patented Feb. 6, 1912.
PApplication filed November 18, 1911. Serial No. 660,960.
' prevent any drawing of the threads of the stocking as is common with devices now in use.
Heretofore it has been the uniform practice to provide garters with loops or hooks of one sort and another to engage the stocking, such devices exerting a strain upon one part of the stocking in excess of another part of the stocking, and as a result they draw threads, and otherwise injure the stocking.
, To avoid this is the purpose of my invention, and it will now be described in detail. With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is a view in elevation illustrating my improvements. ,Fig. 2, is a view in longitudinal section, and Fig. 3, is a view in elevation of one of the sections 2. I
1, represents astocking to which my improvements are secured as will now be described. Y
My improved attachment comprises two members 2, 2, which are precisely alike. Each member consists of a blank which may be of strong fabric, leather, or other suitable material, and is made with. an extended base portion 3, and a relatively narrow tongue portion 1. The base 'portions 3,. 3, are located against the outer and inner faces respectively of the stocking, while the tongue portions 4 extend above the edge of the stocking and are positioned one upon. the other with the ends of the tongues lying against the body of the stocking and the base portions 3. A line of stitching 9 is" then made through the base portions 3, tongues 4, and stocking 1, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and secures the two members in position.
In assembling the parts, the tongues are first passed through the lower end of a metal loop 5', so that they. serve to hold the metal loop at the upper end of the stocking,
and this metal loop is adapted to be caught over a button 6 on an ordinary garter -.7. A button hole 8 is formed in the members 2, 2, and stocking 1, so that if desired, the button of the garter may be caught through this button hole. This is "an extra precaution in case the metal loops should become detached, or if for any other reason it may be desirable to utilize the button hole.
It willbe noted that the base portion of the members is extended transversely, so
thatthe strain is distributed throughout an extended area of the stocking, and not confined to anyone oint. It is therefore believed that the li e of the stocking will be lengthened, and that the stocking will be i more securely and smoothly held by means of the garter than can be accomplished with devices in use.
Various slight changes might be madein the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my in vention, and hence I do not-limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. .As a new article. of manufacture, a stocking, flexible members located against the inner and outer faces of .the stocking at its upper end, tongues on said members projected over the upper edge of the stocking and overlapping, a metal loop through which said tongues project, and a line of stitching through. said members, tongues and stockings, substantially as described.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a stocking, flexible members located against the inner and outer faces of the stocking. at its upper end, tongues on said members projected over thenp per edge of the stocking In. testimony whereof I have signed my and overlapping, a metal loop through name to this specification in the presence which. said tongues project, a line of stitchof two subscribing witnesses.
ing through said members, tongues and F LORIAN E. MUNICH. 5 stockings, and said members and stocking Witnesses:
having a button hole therein, substantially R. H. KRENKEL, as described. I CHAS. E. Poms.-
