" ALFRED L. C0M'101S,1 OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR WOODS- SHERWOOD COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
vs'r.urinaria.i i'
speeicatia of Leiters Patent,
To all whom t may camera Be it known that I, ALFRED L. CoMTois, a
State of Massachusetts, have invented a new l and useful Strainer, of which the following is a specitication.
The principal objects of this invention are to provide a new and improved means for lconnecting the trame of a strainer with the V strainer itself; to provide a connection ot this kind ot such character that no solder will have to be used in mounting iton the strainer and that its production will be materially simplified so that it can be made it slides. It will be seen also that the cross chiey in dies.
l'The invention also involves other im-" provements and Jfeatures of construction as will appear hereinafter. l
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side view ot an extension strainer constructed in accordance with thisI invention. Fig. 2 is an end view of the same, andv F ig. 3 is a plan.
:The invention is shown as applied to lan ordinary extension consisting of two members 10 and 11 which` are connected by integral eyes 12 at-their ends forming guides through which the iframes can slide upon each other. It can be applied toother forms of frames however. Mounted on this frame is the strainer 14 which hasv an upper sheet metal band 15 as usual. The upper band is provided with a top bead 16 integral with the body of the band.
Just under the bead 16 is a wire frame 17 of a general circular form fitting the circumference of the band and resting just under the bead. In order to hold this wire in position without the employment of solier, the sheet metal band is provided with integral projections 18 extending outwardly just under the wire at intervals along'the length thereof. The wire is formed of just such shape as to fit the band snugly and the tit of these projections under it effectively holds it in position. This is an exceedingly simple way of securing this result and results in considerable' saving in expense as the parts can be made in dies. In tact it adds to the durability of the implement itself.-
with the extension or other frame this wire i'is provided with integral hooks at opposite sides thereof each hook comprising tivo parallel spaced outwardly extending arms 30. llach arm extends downwardly to form a vertical lmember 21 and these members can extend inwardly to form connections 22 which are connected by an integral cross memberl 22%. This cross member 23 preferably henton the arc of a circle so as to tit snugly against the circumferential band 15 around the strainer.
Itwill be seen` that a space is provided between the circumferential band and the outwardly extending arms through which the extension :trame passes andfalong which bars fitting against the upper band as they do, serve to securely hold the parts in position and increase the rigidity and tirinnessof the Whole construction. At the same time no solder is required, although it solder is-applied the device willfbe further strengthened. In this way there are no internal parts to project on the inside ot the strainer and no soldered pieces which are likely to become loose in use. The wire around the top of the strainer serves to strengthen the strainer itself so that the upper metal band can be made of thinner metal and an account of consisting of a single piece of wire surrounding it and integral with the projections Yfor holding the frame, it is of exceedingly firm construction and inexpensive to make andwto apply to the strainer.' On account ofthe form and features yabove described the band 15 and connectedparts can bemade very rapidly and uniformly in dies.
Although I havt illustrated and described a preferred embodiment of the invention, I' am aware that modifications can be made therein without departing from the spirit ot the invention as expressed in' the claims. Therefore,'l do not wish to be limited to all the features of construction shown and described, but
llhat l do claim. is
1. As an article ot manufacture, a strainer comprising an extension trame and the strainer' having a wire extending around the upper part thereof and provided with integral projections forv receiving and guiding the extension frame. j
2. As an .article of manufacture, a strainer comprising an extension frame .and a atented Felo-r 6., 1912K nppucaaamea october-9, 19111; seriai no; 653,534.1 f 1 I vstrainer having a pair of opposite guidesl connected therewith and i `of said cross piece and then upwardly subfor the extension frame, each of'said guides being formed of a piece of wire having two members spaced apart through which the rame passes, said members being connected by an integral cross piece.
3. As, an article of manufacture, a strainer comprising a frame and a strainer having a pair of opposite guides for theframe, each of said guides being formed ofla piece ofl wire havin 'two members spaced apart through which 'the frame passes, said members being connected by an' integral cross piece, said cross piece engaging the` wall of the strainer and .conforming to the shape thereof.
4. As an article ofmanufacture, a strainer body having a top yband and a wire member rovided with a cross piece below the top ot the strainer and engaging 'file 'out'eifwalll thereof, and two members extending outwardly from the ends stantially to the top of theA strainer and then` inwardly parallel with each other.
5. As an article of` manufacture, a strainer havlng a metal band and a wire member provided withva cross piece below the top of the band and engaging the outer wall upwardly substantially to the top of the band and then inwardly parallel with each j other, said members diver ing from each other and extending aroun the-band near the top and being secured thereto solely by contact with the band.
6. As an article Iof manufacture, a strainer having a top sheet metal band rovided with an outwardly extending bea at the top thereof, a wire extending substantially around the band just under said bead and provided on opposite sides of the strainer with integral ways having a passage through' them adjacent to the wall of the strainer, the bandbeing provided with projections just under said wire to, hold it in place.
7. As an article of-manufacture,` a strainer having an upper sheet metal band provided with an outwardly extending bead at ther top and a wire extending around the strainer 'itself under the bead, said sheet metal band .having extensions on the inside [formingl projections on the outside -just under thewfire to hold it-in position against the bead.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
