NUT-LOCK.
Specification of Letters Batent.
Patented J an. 30,1912.
Application filed March 29, 1911. Serial No. 617,638.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH L. TINNIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ripon, in the county of San Joaquin, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will. enable others skilled in the art 4to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part ofi this application.
This invention relates to improvements in nut and bolt locks the object of the invention being to produce a nut lock which will hold the nuts stationary at any desired point and one which will hold fast in any fixed position regardless of the amount of jar which the bolt may receive.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purposes for which it is designed.
These objects, I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claim.
In the drawings similar characters of ref-` erence indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure l is a side elevation of a boltand nut showing my improved lock device thereon. Fig. 2 is a similar View showing the locking mechanism in section. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a bolt, the outer end being shown in section. Fig. 4 is a front elevation of a locking. sleeve.
Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings l designates a bolt, which in my improved device is provided with an horizontal central slot 2 in its outer end and a vertical orifice 3 opening into said slot 2 in a transverse manner.
Mounted upon the bolt is the usual nut 4 and the numeral 5 designates a sleeve having a recess at 6 of a shape to conform with the shape of the nut 4 and to receive the same.
When the nut is in position this sleeve 5 is maintained in the bolt and the nut 4 disposed within the recess 6 and then the sleeve 5 is fixed stationary upon the bolt in the following manner, namely, said sleeve 5 has a cross plate 7 which fits into the slot 2 and then a cotter pin 8 is disposed through the sleeve 5, the hole 3 and the plate 7 and spaced apart at its lower end as at o whereby the sleeve 5 is locked securely to the bolt and the nut 4 is held securely in the recess 6 and, since the sleeve can not turn, the nut can not turn and is held stationary in position, the plate 7, fitting always in a certain fixed position in the bottom of the slot 2 as shown in Fig. 2, provides means for accurately alining the holes through the bolts and sleeves to receive the pin 8 so that the insertion of said pin 8 need not be done by sighting through the same, for it would be possible for the bolt to be placed in an out of the way position or in a somewhat inaccessible place where sighting would be impossible. As will be noted in Fig. 2, when the sleeve 5 is placed in position, this plate 7 is projecting into the bottom of the slot 2,
and this brings all of the holes in the sleeve, bolt and plate into immediate alinement and the pin 8 can then be inserted through the same without any trouble or difficulty whatsoever.
I provide a flexible filler washer 9 disposed in the bot-tom of the recess 6 so as to prevent any movement between the nut 4 and the sleeve 5 which might have a tendency to permit the nut 4 to become loosened to a slight degree.
From the foregoing description it will readily appear that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfils the objects of the invention as set forth herein.
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from such details may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention what I mounted on said'bolt, a sleeve mounted on I' claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A lnut lock comprising a bolt having a longitudinal slot at its outer end, a nut Cotter pin projected through said sleeve, bolt and cross plate as described. 10
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JOSEPH L. TINNIN. said bolt and having a recess receivingl said Witnesses:
nut; a cross plate on .said sleeve adapted to PERCY S. WEBSTER, project into said slot in said bolt and a JOSHUA B. WEBSTER.
