Description

F. DE VAUX.
NUT LOCK.
APPLICATION FILED Nov.25.1916.
1,232,290 Patented July 3, 1917n y INVENTOR. WITNESS di e y@ n IINITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
FRANK DE VAUX, OF STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO WILLIAM `H. SLIGEB, OF STOCKTON, CALIFORNIA.
NUT-LOCK.
Application ined November 25, 191e.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, FRANK DE VAUX, a citizen of France, residing at Stockton, in the county of San Joaquin, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.
This invention relates to improvements in nut locks, the object of the invention being to produce a nut which will automatically lock itself against being accidentally removed, or loosened under vibration and yet may at any time necessary be screwed tighter.
A further object of the invention is .to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purposes for which it is designed.
These objects I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following specification and claim.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure l is a top view of the nut showing my improved structure.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on a line X-X of Fig. 1.
Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference yon the drawings, the numeral I designates a nut having threads 2 and a slot 8 in which is rigidly fastened a flat spring 4. In tightening the nut on a bolt, the spring 4 is forced back into the recess 5 as shown in Fig. l, and, when the direction of turning is reversed, it lies flat against the surface 6 and the point 7 of the spring 4 is adapted to engage with and force into the top of the threads 8 on the bolt 9 thereby preventing the nut from being unscrewed.
The upper end of the slot 3 is enlarged as at 3a and the spring 4 has an enlarged head Speccation of Letters Patent.
Patented July 3, 1917.
serial No. 133,464.
4fL to fit into the same. This is to form a lock to hold the spring 4 from, vdropping downwardly out of the slot 3 into the orifice in the nut. rIhe side of the recess 5a is shaped in the form of a semi-circle from its juncture with the enlarged end 3 of the slot 3 clear down to its justure with the inner circumference of the nut 1. The purpose of this is to cause the spring 4 when pressed into the recess 5 to be sprung along its perfect curvature so that its resiliency will not be impaired as it might be if it were bent against the angular member.
i/Vithin the nut l adjacent the square-side 6 I provide a small hole or recess 10. When the nut is in position and has been backed to bring the spring 4 against the side 6 (in which position it is locked to the bolt) and it is desired to unlock the same, a small instrument or tool of any kind is inserted in this hole l0 and pried against the member 6 to unloosen it from its engagement with the bolt so that the nut can be turned off.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfils the object of the invention as set forth therein.
While this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention as defined by the appended claim. Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A nut provided with a slot communicating with the bore of the nut, one side of the slot being flat and the opposite side being a true curve with the curvature extending toward the flat side, and a spring mounted within the slot and arranged to engage the flat side of the slot and the bolt upon which the nut may be mounted to lock the nut on the bolt, or moved against the curved side to release it from the bolt to allow the nut to be removed therefrom.
In testimony whereof I aiiiX my signature.
FRANK DE VAUX.
