WITNESSES Z INVENTOR v Attorney EARL TIFFANY, OF LOGAN, IOWA.
HARNESS. 7
To all whom 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that I, EARL TIFFANY, a citizen of the United States, residing at- Logan, in the county of Harrison and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Harness, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in harness and refers particularly to the construction of the collar and breast strap of either a single or double harness.
The main object of my invention is the provision of a novel form of fastening for the collar and breast band which will enable the harness to be instantly applied or removed, and which fastening will hold the relative parts in proper position under all conditions.
The object of my invention is also the production of a fastening which will be particularly desirable for the intended purpose by reason of its ease and facility of operation, its ornamental appearance and general efficiency.
To attain the desired objects the invention consists in the novel form of adjustable and detachable connection between the collar and breast straps, and in the novel construction and combination and arrangement of parts for service, substantially as disclosed herein.
In order that the detailed construction of my improvement and its adaptability for the purpose, as well as its many advantages may be fully understood and appreciated I have illustrated my invention in the accompanying drawings.
Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my improvement in position upon the animal to clearly illustrate the application of my improvements. Fig. 2 represents a per spective view of the harness removed. Fig. 3 represents a detailed perspective View of the connection or coupling constituting the main feature of my improvement, and Fig. 4 represents a section through the connection, the two members being shown in coupled relation.
Referring by numeral to the drawings in which similar numerals indicate like parts in the several views :The numeral 1 designates the collar strap, 2 the connections on said strap, 3 the two breast strap members, and my connection is used between the collar straps and the two breast strap members. The coupling or connection consists Specification of Letters Patent.

of a member formed with an open eye, having the inner portion 4, which is passed through-the loops 5 and'6 of the collar and breast strap on one side and having its other curved portion l, formed with the cylindrical stud 7, provided with the lug 8, and another member having the same form of loop for connection with the collar and breast strap, but provided with the sleeve or barrel 9, formed with the depending yoke 10 and with the slot 11 contiguous to its inner open end and with the bayonet or an le slot 12 in one side, and in use the stud of one member enters the sleeve of the other member and when the stud has been forced home in the sleeve the turning of the lug on the stud brings said stud into locking engagement with the bayonet or angle slot of the sleeve as will be readily understood.
The depending hail of the sleeve member receives the connecting strap 13, between the member and back strap 14:, and when used upon double harness the tongue strap,
l5 has its inner loop passing around the sleeve member. It will of course be apparent that my device is applicable to single or double harness and that the device makes a perfect connection between the collar and breast strap and the tongue and back strap connections, and that a set of harness equipped with my device enables quick application of the harness; also that the device is reliable and cannot possibly become detached accidentally and adds very little to the cost of the harness while greatly i11- creasing the efiiciency and desirability of the harness.
Among the many advantages which my improvement possesses are that it dispenses with springs for securing the male and female members, as when the said members are connected or coupled the bail on the female member is in a vertical position and is retained by the strap which leads from the bail to the girth connections. Also the male and female members each constitute a single casting or part only, which provide the open eyes at right angles to the members, said eyes having the portion for connection with the breast and collar straps, also the cylindrical sleeve of the female member forms the connection with the pole strap and the bail on the female member receives the connecting straps for the girth strap and the bail is in consequence retained in the proper position and renders it impossible for the female and male members to become accidentally detached. In short the simple coupling consisting of the two members provides the connection for the breast, collar, pole and girth straps and retains all of the straps in the proper position and while capable of instant coupling and release cannot possibly work loose or become accidentally detached.
1 claim 1. A separable harness coupling, comprising a slotted sleeve, a bail having a slot therein and depending from said sleeve, combined with a stud having an integral lug adapted to pass through the slotted bail and to engage the slotted sleeve to lock the parts together.
2. A separable harness coupling, comprising a slotted sleeve, a bail having a slot therein and. depending from said sleeve, and an integral eye arranged at right angles thereto, combined with a stud having an integral lug adapted to pass through the slotted bail and to engage the slotted sleeve to lock the parts together, and an integral eye arranged at right angles to the stud.
3. The combination with the sleeve and stud members adapted to interlock, each formed with an eye at right angles thereto, and the collar and breast straps attached to said eyes, a pole strap attached to the sleeve, a bail depending from said sleeve, and a belly strap attached to said bail, the said straps holding the bail in a vertiwal position.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EARL TIFFANY.
