To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, VALTER EICHELKRAUT, a subject of the King of Prussia, and resident of 6/8 Seehofstrasse, Zehlendorf, near Berlin, Germany, architect, have invented certain new and useful Improvements Relating to Closets, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to closets having a plurality of interchangeable seats, and the object of the present invention is to provide means whereby the seats may be successively passed through an antiseptic liquid for the purpose of cleansing, disinfecting and sterilizing the same.
According to the present invention the seats, which are preferably made in two halves, are carried byA arms at each side of the closet basin, upon a rotatable shaft in the rear of the basin. The halves of the seats are rotatably mounted on their arms so as to be capable of assuming a vertical position when not in use. A chamber adapted to contain an antiseptic liquid is arranged at each side of the basin and the action of bringing vthe next seat into posit-ion for use, is utilized to immerse the used seat into the antiseptic liquid. Four arms are preferably arranged at right angles to each other at each end of the shaft, each arm being adapted to carry one half of a seat and the antiseptic liquid chamber is preferably of semicircular form, so that the operation of immersing one seat in the liquid simultaneously withdraws another seat from the liquid and enables said seat to dry. In order to facilitate the drying of the seats during the interval of time between tic liquid and the bringing of the seat into position for use, the antiseptic liquid is preferably heated so as to more readily vaporize from the seat.
In order that the invention may be more clearly understood, reference is made to the accompanying drawings, whereon I have shown by way of example one method of carrying out my invention.
Figure 1 is a front view of the apparatus, Fig. 2 is a plan view, and Fig. 3 a side view thereof.
1 designates the closet basin provided in the rear with brackets 9 in which is rotatably mounted a horizontal shaft 2. At each end of said shaft are carried a plurality of arms 3, four being shown on the drawings these arms being mounted their withdrawal from the antisep-Y arranged at right angles to one another. Rotatably mounted on each of the-arms 3 is one half of a seat 10, the seat being shown on the drawings as provided with lugs 11 loosely fitted upon the arms 3. In order to normally maintain the seats in vertical position, a crown-shaped cam 5 is mounted on the brackets 9, and adapted to engage with this cam 5 is a wiper 4 shown on the drawings as fixed to the half 10 of the seat. The wiper 4 is maintained in engagement with the face of the cam 5 by means of a spring 6, one end of which is secured to the arm 3, while the other end bears against the side face of the wiper 4. The rear half of the face of the cam 5 is perfectly straight and vertical so that under the action ofthe spring 6 and wiper 4 the half 10 of the seat is maintained in vertical position during the rear half of its rotation. The forward half of the face of the cam is provided with a depression 7 so that the seat on maintaining its highest posit-ion in readiness for bringing it into use, is enabled to assume a horizontal position and rest on t-he basin on further rotation of the shaft 2. The lower front half of the face of the cam 5 is outwardly curved at 7 so that the action of bringing a seat into use causes the wiper 4 of the seat previously used to ride on the cam surface 7 and turn the half 10 of the used seat into vertical position.
Arranged at each side of the closet basin 1 is a substantially semi-cylindrical chamber 8 adapted to contain an antiseptic liquid, and the halves 10 of the .seats are adapted to move through this chamberl during the lower half of their rotation, while they are capable of drying during the upper half of their rotation. The seats are adapted to be rotated in the direction of the arrow A in Fig. 3 about the shaft 2 and in order to prevent return lmovement of the shaft 2, a ratchet wheel 12 fixed thereon is adapted to be engaged by means of a spring pawl 13 mounted on the bracket 9.
In order to facilitate the drying of the seats, the liquid in the chamber 8 may be heated in any desired manner. On the drawings I have shown an electrical resistance 14 located in the lower part of the chamber 8 and adapted to be connected with suitable electrical connections, but it will of course be understood that the liquid in the chambers 8 may be heated in any other desired manner. In order to prevent the escape of fumes from the chamber 8 the latter may be provided with hinged iiaps l5 hinged to t-he top of the chamber S at 16 so as to be capable of opening inwardly. The heating of the antiseptic liquid in the chamber S not only facilitates the drying of the seat, but also serves to slightly heat the same, which is particularly advantageous when the seats are constructed of porcelain or like material. The seats may however be constructed of any desired material. IVhen employing wood seats' it is preferable that resinous wood be employed or that the wood be boiled in varnish and be not capable of warping in the liquid.

In combination with a closet basin, a horizont-al rotatable shaft, a plurality of dividedseats, arms at each end of said shaft, said arms rotatably carrying the respective portions of said seats, means for normally maintaining said seat portions in vertical position and whereby said seat portions may be successively moved into horizontal position so as to rest on said basin, and a chamber at each side of said basin through which said seat portions are adapted to be moved when in vertical position, said chambers containing an antiseptic liquid.
3. In combination with a closet basin, a horizontal rotatable shaft, a plurality of divided seats, arms at each end of said shaft, said arms rotatably carrying the respective portions of said seats, means for normally maintaining' said seat portions in vertical position and whereby said seat portions may be successively moved into horizontal position so as to rest on said basin, and an approximately each side of said basin and somewhat below said shaft and containing an antiseptic liquid, said seat portions being adapted after use to be moved through said liquid in al vertical position and during the lower part of their movement and being capable of drying during the upper part of their movement ready for re-use.

In combination with a closet basin, a horizontal rotatable shaft, a plurality of seats carried by said shaft and normally held in a vertical plane, means whereby said seats may be successively moved into the horizontal plane so as to rest on said basin, a chamber through which said seats are adapted to be moved when in vertical position, said chamber containing an antiseptic liquid, and means for heating the liquid in said chamber.
5. .In combination with a closet basin, a horizontal rotatable shaft, a plurality of seats carried by said shaft and normally held in vertical plane, means whereby said seats may be successively moved into the horizontal plane so as to rest on said basin, a chamber through which said seats are adapted to be moved when in vertical position, said chamber containing an antiseptic liquid, means for heating the liquid in said chamber, and hinged flaps adapted to prevent the escape of fumes from said chamber while enabling' the seats to be moved thereth r ou gh.
