Specification of Letters Patent.
CONNECTOR.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANK MoCoLLUM and ALLEN C. HANNER, citizens of the United States, residing at Randleman, in the county of Randolph and State of North Carolina, have invented new and useful Improvements in Lug-Strap Connectors, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to an improvement in lug strap holders for looms, being particularly directed to the connection of the pick shaft arm and lug strap which will hold the lug strap into proper position on the pick shaft arm, and which will avoid the excessive wear on the lug strap incident to the usual connection at this point.
The main object of the present invention is the provision of a lug strap connection which will readily cooperate with any sectional formation of pick shaft arm and which in use will evenly distribute the wear and pressure over the forward terminal or bend of the lug strap, thereby avoiding that excessive wear of the lug strap tending to a breaking in a short time with consequent damage to the material being woven or other disadvantageous results.
The invention in its preferred details of construction will be described in the following specification, reference being had particularly to the accompanying drawings, in Which:
Figure 1 is a view illustrating the connection as applied to the lug strap and pick shaft arm. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the connection detached. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 4 is a plan of the holder.
Referring particularly to the accompany ing drawings, wherein is illustrated the preferred form of construction, the improved attachment comprises a sleeve-like body 1 formed with a central bore or opening corresponding in sectional contour to that of the pick shaft arm 2, but preferably of materially greater dimension than that of the pick shaft arm. From the upper edge of the body 1, which is approximately of oval shape in plan, there is extended an ear 3 formed with a screw threaded aperture designed to receive a bolt 4:, which bolt after threaded engagement with the ear is designed to enter any one of a series of openings 5 formed in the pick shaft arm, whereby the connection may be secured to the pick shaft arm and adjusted lengthwise thereof as desired for the usual purposes, the bolt, after its passage through the opening in the pick shaft arm, being terminally provided with the usual securing nut 6. At one end the body 1 is thickened or enlarged in the up- .per portion, as at 7, said enlargement being formed with a threaded opening to receive a set screw 8, the inner terminal of which is designed to bear against the adjacent edge of the pick shaft arm to take up any lost motion, a jam nut 9 being preferably emdisplacement thereof after adjustment. To the respective side walls of the body at a point adjacent the rear end thereof and below the enlargement 7 there are connected arms 10 which extend rearwardly from the body in parallel spaced relation, said arms being preferably offset from the body 1 so that the space included therebetween exceeds the similar dimension of the body. The arms 10 incline downwardly and rearwardly from the connection with the body and at their free ends are connected by a transverse bar 11 preferably rounded on its forward, upper and lower surface to provide a bearing surface 12. Between the bar 11 and the rear wall of the body there is thus provided a space 13 through which passes the usual lug strap 14:.
Inthe use of the device it will be noted that the pressure of the connection is evenly distributed on the lug strap in the bend of the latter. Therefore undue wear of any particular portion of the lug strap at this point is prevented, and the life of the latter thereby materially increased.
The construction of the connection permits any and all necessary adjustment wit-h relation to the pick shaft arm, and is so secured to the latter as to prevent the possibility of separation. Furthermore, the usual power strap is eliminated, the connection adapted for the reception of the oval type pick shaft arm used in the ordinary commercial loom, and the wear on the lug strap is evenly distributed.
The connection is preferably constructed of metal, though in this connection we contemplate the use of any desired material and its manufacture in any desired size as a whole or with respect to any particular portion thereof.
Having thus described the invention, what we claim as new, is
A lug strapped connector including a body ployed with the set screw to prevent casual to receive a picker arm, an ear projecting upwardly from one side of said body, means, engaging said ear to secure the body to the picker arm, downwardly inclined arms projecting from said body, a set screw carried by the body to engage the picker arm and arranged between said arms and adjacent of the lower edge of said body, the length of said bar'being greater than the width of said body, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
