Fo all whom it may concern: Y Be it known that I, SAMUEL VVAiuznN P o'i'rs, a citizen ot the llnited States, residing in .the city ot New York, borough ot Manhattan, county and State ot' New York, have invented certain new and useful flinpi'oveinents in Sethack-Counters, ot which the following is aiull, clear, and exact speelieation.
This invention relates to setback counters and has for aniobject to provide an improved counter wherein a resetting train is continuously in operative position relative to 'the counter dials and in position to pick ,up each of the several dials at the proper time upon its actuation tor the bringing ot the dials to zero simultaneously.
ln the drawings accompanying and tormiiig a part of this specification, one practicable embodiment ot' a form ot my-invention illustrated, wherein- Figure 1 is a front elevation ot the device, the top plate being removed. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the casing showing the mechanism in elevation, this being taken on a plane at about right angles to that illustrated in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of one of the counter units; and Fig. l is a partial elevation and a partial section showing the by-pass relation between the means for connecting the resetting pinion with the dial.
In the mechanism illustrated, the supporting framework is in the nature of a casing having a liaise-plate 5, with boxlike sides 6, and a top-plate 7. The top-plate will, of course, in the mechanism herein illustrated7 be provided in the well known manner with openings through which the figures ot the dial will be read. There are shown tour counter units in the present illustration, each ot which units embodies a counter-disk 8, provided with a series ot numerals. Each of the disks is shown fast with a hub 9, an'd a pallet-wheel 10, having as many points as there are numerals upon the dial. The hub member is mounted upon a shatt 11, having bearings in the top and bottom plates 7 and 5 respectively. pivoted upon an actuator-lever '111, which will be vconnected to the movable part ot the mechanism, the movements whereof are to be Ccounted by the instrument. has associated with its pallet-wheel 10, a pin 17, for engaging the pallet-wheel of the next unit tor advancing this the distance of one step upon each rotation, so that each unit will be advanced one step at each rotation ot" each preceding unit ot the series in the well known manner.
Suitable springs, designated without preterence by the reference character 18, are provided for engaging the pallet-wheels and holding these against accidental movement. Each of the dials has tast with it a. member tor engaging an abutment associated with that particular member ot the resetting train which is connected with that unit. In the present showing' each ot the pallet-wheels 10, carries a spring-linger 22, located in position for being engaged by a pin 28. carried by the pinion 21, upon the torwari'l resetting movement ot the pinion in such manner that the dial of that unit will be moved forward. The connection between the spring-linger 22, and the pin Q3, is ot a b v-pass nature, so that asthe dial isadvanced normally in the counting operation ot' the device the spring'will ride over the pin 23, but upon tne movement of the and brought into position so that the same numeral on each willappear at the reading line, and the further advance ofthe resetting train will bring all the dials to such a position that the zero character will be presented at the reading line in each unit, and the zero characters upon all of the units will corne to the reading line simultaneously.

Having thus described my invention, what l claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
in resetting counter7 the combination 'each overlapping ymy hand in' the with a base-plate,V of a4 series of rotary counter units each unit comprising a spindle set obliquely to the base-plate, a counter dial, a pallet wheel fast with the counter dial and mounted on the spindle, a spur gear mounted on the spindle free of the counter dial and pallet Wheel, a pin carried by the spur gear and projecting toward the pallet wheel, anda spring finger carried by the pallet wheel and projecting toward the spur gear and rearwardly of the direction of rotation of the pallet wheel, the counter dial and pallet wheel of each successive unit overlapping those ofthe preceding unit, an actuator finger carried by the upper face of pallet wheel for engaging and actuating the next succeeding pallet wheel, and train.
