it. To all tighom it may concern:
'Beit known that we, WALTER PARKER and LYMANE. CAMPBELL, citizens of the United States, arid residents of Neola, in the county of Pott'awattamie and State of Iowa, have invented new and Improved Mold, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The invention relates to molds for forming fence posts or like bodies from a plastical material, such as concrete, and has for an object to'pr'ovide a'simple,-strong and durable mold by means of which fence posts and the like can be expeditiously fashioned with little time and labor; which can be easily assembled andtaken apart, and which provides means for 'adjustably and releasably holding wires or other suitable reinforcing members within the 'mold.
For the purpose mentioned we employ a mold having a base, sides carried thereby and removable therefrom, end pieces removably associated with the sides and adjustable means for holding reinforcing members within the mold so that they can be substantially embedded in the material forming the fence post or other body.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings constituting a part of this specification, in which similar charaotersof reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 1s a perspective view of our post mold; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary side elevation of the ends of our invention, with parts broken away to disclose the underlying structure and showing the means for adjustably holding reinforcing members in the mold; Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 38 in Fig. 2; andFig. l is a longitudinal sectional view of a modified form of holder for .adjustably reinforcing members in the mold.
Referring more particularly to the views, we provide a base or bottom board 10 adapted to constitute the floor of the mold. Suitable end pieces 11 having slots therein are provided and side pieces 12 are adapted to removably engage the end pieces as will be seen in Fig. 1. Secured to the side pieces 12 are angle irons 13 with a portion of one of the angle pieces at theends of each of the angle'irons cut off to form a stop lug 14,

while the remaining angle pieces 15 at the said ends are adapted to be disposed in the slots of the end pieces 11, as will also be a seen in Fig. 1.
Secured in both ends 11 are retaining 7 members consisting of collars 16 having slidably disposed therein threaded sleeves 17 and slidably mounted in the said sleeves are threaded rods 18. At one end of each of the sleeves 17 arefound integral flanges 19- provided with integral lugs 20, and at one end of each of the rods 18 circular retaining flanges 21 are integrally formed, the
22 of a reinforcing 22 in engagement with the lugs 20. Handled nuts 23 are provided on the threaded portions of the sleeves 17 to rigidly hold the sleeves from sliding in thecollars 16, and winged nuts 24 are provided on'the threaded portions of the rods 18 to rigidly hold the rods relatively to the sleeves 17.
In the use of our mold for making concrete fence posts and the like, the base 10, ends 11 and sides 12 are assembled as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, and the reinforcing 22 is disposed in the mold with the ends thereof gripped by the retaining members as shown in Fig. 2. Now, by holding the ends 22 in tioned in the mold. Cement is then placed in the mold to completely cover the reinforcing and after being suitably tamped and permitted to partially settle, the winged nuts 24 and handled nuts 23 are operated to release the ends 22 from the. retaining members after which the ends 11 can be easily disengaged from the side pieces 12 by sliding the ends outwardly. The sides 12 are then removed, and the concrete post is per- .said flanges being adapted to retain the ends mitted to set, thus becoming dry and hard I and constituting the desired commercial article. We have provided-handles 25 in the rods 18 for more easily operating the same,

In the modified form of retaining member shown in F ig. 4, we employ a sleeve 30 for threaded engagement with a collar 31, and slidably disposed in the sleeve is a rod 32 provided with integral'forked ends 33 having claws 3a thereon for gripping an end of the reinforcing, the said ends 33 being preferably made of a springy metal so that after the ends have been moved within the sleeve .30, thus moving the claws 34: toward each other to-grip the end of the reinforcing, the said ends 33 will naturally distend when they are, removed from the sleeve 30. Two retaining members are preferably used in connection with our mold, one retaining member being mounted in each of the ends 11.
From the foregoing description it will be readily seen that a cheap, substantial and easily manipulated mold is produced, and
while We have shown for example a mold for fashioning fence posts of hexagonal cross sect-ion, the form can be altered to provide a post of square or other section, the shape merely depending upon the sides of the mold, which are'preferably formed from sheet metal or the like. This and others of the constructive details can be varied in accordance wlth ind vldual preference and conditions without departing from the underlyingspirit of the invention, and, if de-' sired, fanciful designs can be providedin' relief on the sides of the'mold, thus causing these designs to appear on the outer sides of the finished article.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A mold comprising a base, sides carried thereby, end pieces removably associated with the sides, each of the said end pieces being provided with a collar having slidably supported therein a threaded sleeve, there Within the collar, the threaded portion of the rod being provided with a "winged nut adapted to rigidly hold the rodwithin the sleeve, whereby when the reinforcing memtween the said lugs operation of the winged nuts will cause the end of the --'reinforcing rod to be securely grasped'by the said sleeve and rod, operation of the handled nuts, whereby they are brought into engagement withthe collars, serving to properlyposition the said reinforcingrod and hold it under tension within the said mold. p I
