Letters Paten-t No. 101,570, dated April 5, 1870.
IMPROVEIENT IN GATES.
The Schedule referred to in then Lettera Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AQUILA BEGRAFT, of Jacksonville, in the county of Morgan and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements` in Gates; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon, making part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a view of a gate with my improvements attached. v
Figure 2 is a side view of the gate-hinge.
Figure 3 is a side view of the brace-stirrup.
Figure 4 is a rear sectional view of iig. 1, showing clearly the fender or guard-boards.
The nature of my in'ention consists in constructing a gate with a center stile distant from the front post From the top of this stile, extending diagonally across the gate, I fasten by screws or other suitable means a brace, which reaches to the bottom of the' rear or hind post. At both ends of lthis brace I secure a stirrup or plate, provided with a projecting flange, so arranged as to prevent the brace from slipping from its position. Behind the middle stile I also place a key-wedge, to bind the stile and thus support the brace in keeping the gate square.
My invention also consists in fastening immediately behind the front postor stile a board reaching across the three lower rails next to the bottom rail, which acts as a fender and prevents the hubs of wagons and other vehicles from breaking off the post.
My invention also consists in forming the gatehinge with two flanges, by means of which the rear post or stile is firmly held. On the hook upon which the hinge rests and works I place a steel washer, to prevent undue wea-r of the same or of the hinge.
My invention also consists in constructing the shank of the lower hinge longer than that of the upper, whereby the operation of closing the gate is greatly facilitated.
To enable othels skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its constmction and operation.
A Al are the front and rear posts or Stiles.
B is the center stile.
C is the brace.
c c are the stirrups. These stirrups are inverted L- shape in form, having a rectangular slot cut in the leg, through which the top and bottom rails a" a respectively pass.
c' is a wedge-shaped key passing through the upper rail a close to the stile B, and by means oi' which the same is retained in position D D are two hinges.
The shank :c of the lower hinge D is longer than the shank x' of the upper hinge D', in consequence of which the operation of-closing the gate is greatly facilitated. I
These hinges D D* are provided with anges d d, which lit over and tightly clasp the rear post or stile A1 of the gate.
d1 d1 are screws or bolts, which pass entirely through the stile A1 of the gate, and also through suitable openings in the hinge, and are firmly secured by means of the nuts (l2 (Z2.
E E are the hooks, firmly secured to the post A, and on which the eyes of the hinge rest and work.
These hooks E E are provided with metal washers c e, one on each, to prevent all unduewear.
F is a guard-board or shield, which is tlrmly'attached to the three lower lrails next to the bottom rail a of the gate, and fits closely against the front stile A. This board, which is clearly shown in fig. 4, acts as al fender in preventing the hubs of wagons from tearing away the front post.
G is au upright strip of elastic wood, which is fastened to the two lower rails by means of screws or other equivalent device. This strip serves as a handlefor the gate-catch.
H. is a horizontal strip of wood, which is fastened to the strip G by means of the staple h. This strip H passes through suitable openings in* both the front post and middle stile.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
A gate, when the same is constructed as shown, that is, having a stile, B, brace C, stil-rups c c,`hinges D AD, having flanges L d and eye-shanks :i: x', and guard-board 01 shield F, the whole being so combined and arranged as to operate substantiallyl as described, as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
AQUILA BEGRAFT.
