Specification of Letters Patent.
Application fi1ed February 11, 1911. Serial No. 608,062.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HENRY E. STOLEY, citizen of the United States, residing at Woodburn, in the county of Marion and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fence-Posts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its primary object a simple, durable and eflicient construction of fence post which may be easily made out of iron or steel and which embodies a notched body portion preferably angular in cross section, and a slide co-acting therewith, the slide being movable in flanges formed on the body portion and being adapted to hold the 'fence wires after they have been placed in the notches, the number and location of the notches being determined by the number or kind of wires intended to be used with the post and the construction rendering it easy to raise or lower the wires from one set jof notches to another, by merely raising the slide so as to open the notches.
lNith this and other objects in view as will more fully appear as the description proceeds, the invention consists in certain constructions and arrangement of the parts that I shall hereinafter fully describe and claim.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following clescription and accompanying drawing, in which:

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawing by the same reference characters.
The body portion 1 of my improved fence post may be formed of iron or steel, and is preferably of V-shape in cross section, being provided on its longitudinal or vertical edges with inwardly extending flanges 2 interrupted at any desired intervals by notches 3 designed to receive the fence wires.
A slide 4 in the form of an open frame, is designed for movement back of the flanges 2, the sides of the slide being preferably beveled as indicated at 5 so as to conform to the channels produced by the flanges. By means of this slide, the wires may be easily and securely held in place after being positioned in the notches 3, the slide being then slipped into place back of the flanges 2, so as to extend across the notches and close the same. Preferably, the slide 4 is provided at its outer end with a laterally extending arm 6 which may be pivoted thereto, said arm not only constituting a handle by which the slide may be easily raised when it is desired to take any of the wires out of their notches, but also constituting a rest or support for the slide to hold the latter in its operative position, the arm resting upon the uppen edge of the post, as clearly illustrated in the drawing.

In the practical use of the device, the wires are inserted in the notches 3, the notches being of any desired number and location according to the particular kind of wire fencing employed, and after the wires are in place, the slide 4 is slipped down behind the flanges 2 so as to close the notches 3 and retain the wires in position, the slide, in its operative position being supported by the engagement of the arm 6 with the upper edge of the body 1 of the post.
What I claim is:
A fence post comprising a body which is V-shaped in transverse section and which is provided at its edges with flanges extending from one end of the body and terminating short of the other end thereof, said flanges being provided with transversely disposed notches, a slide in the form of an open frame adapted to fit snugly within the flanges, and I means carried by the slide for engagement with the top of the post to hold the lower end of the slide in a position elevated above the surface of the ground.
