in Toilet-Paper Cabinets, of which the following is a specification. My invention has reference to toilet paper cabinets and consists of certain improvements which are fully set forth in the following'specification and shown in the M companying drawings which form a part thereof.

The object of my invention is to provide a construction of sheet metal cabinet which shall embody certain improvements particularly directed to lightness, cheapness, ap-

pearance, durability and strength whereby the cabinet is more satisfactory than the cast metal cabinets heretofore in use.

My invention consists of toilet paper serving cabinet largely made of sheet metal and embodying the several improvements which are fully set out hereinafter and more spe-- cifically defined in the claims.

My invention will be better understood by reference to the drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a sectional side elevation of a cabinet embodying my improvements; Fig. 2 is an elevation of the interior thereof with the'lid removed; Fig. 3 is an elevation looking at the innersurface of the lid; Fig. 4 is a side elevation of the cabinet ready for use; Fig. 5 is a cross section on line ww of Fig. 1; and Fig. 6 is a cross section on line 'g -y of Fig. 3.

2 is the box-shaped case and has back sides and bottom and is provided with a series of apertures 37 for screws whereby the cabinet may be attached tothe wall. This case is preferably formed of stamped sheet metal. The front-portion of the bottom flange is notched so as to form a narrow slot'5 between it and the lid 3 through which the paper sheets are discharged.

6 is an inclined sheet metal deflector plate secured on the bottom or otherwise and acts as a deflector to guide the sheets forward through the discharge slot 5 thereby permitting said slot to be very narrow. The use of a narrow slot prevents tampering with the interior.

14 is a rock shaft journaled in bearing plates 15 which are flanged and riveted at 26 to inwardly pressed box-shaped portions 25 of the back plate of the case 2 so that the rivets 26 do not project from the back and interfere with the cabinet fitting snugly to the wall. This rock shaft 14 has its ends provided with polygonal shaped parts exposed through holes on the sides of the. case 2 so as to enable the shaft to be rocked by a key 24 shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. By this means the key may be applied to either ends to suit cases when the cabinet is crowded into a corner and only one side .is exposed. Secured to the rock shaft 14 near each side of the case and preferably working in contact with the bearings 15,

are the locking plates 16 having laterally extending locking pins 21 which engage the hooked arms 22 of the lid;

17 are springs which are secured to the back of the case and press upon the locking plates 16 to move them and the rock shaft into locking position as shown in Fig. 1. Any other spring devices for this purpose may be employed.

3 is the lid and is made of stamped sheet metal and extended over the-top and front of the case 2, being hinged at 4 to the said case" at the top" and back'portion thereof.

The side edges of the lid, except at the bottom, are flanged as at 28 so as to fit over the sides of the case 2, and the central portion of the front is stamped up into box form as at 36 to give strength transversely and to provide room for the discharging roller 7, the deflector 29 and the retaining guard 27. This lid 3 has a transverse stiff-f ening bar 38 extending across it and shaped to fit its cross section, and'is secured in place by soldering, brazing or other means; and

'theends of this stiffening bar'are bent back-v ward at each end parallel to the flanges 28 to form the locking hooked arms 22 hereinbefore specified and as shown in Figs. 1, 3 and 5, and which are engaged by the locking pins 21 of the plate 16. Inthis way the light sheet metal cover is strongly braced and at the same timev is locked at each side to tightly seal the cabinet.

The inside of the case 2 is provided adjacentto each of its side walls with a guide channel 17 into which the hooked-portions 22 are guided when sealing thecabinet, and theside walls of said guide channels act to prevent any loose paper becoming caught in the locking devices. The case 2 is also provided with sight -holes,. inits sides and channels 19 for glass windows 20 by which the paper contents within may be seen and a knowledge of the condition readily ascertained, without opening the lid. These glass window plates 20 are held in position by the lid 3 when closed.

The paper package indicated in dotted lines at 9, may be of the usual form provided with an inverted pocket at the rear which fits over an upwardly extending arm 13 and by which itis hung in position to be pressed against the discharging roller 7. The arm 13 is riveted at its lower part to a pivoted plate 8, said plate being hinged to the case 2 at 4 and pressed toward the roller 7 bythe spring 10. The plate 8 thus supports the lower part of thepackage of paper and presses it tightly against the roller 7 so that when the latter is rotated it creates a friction suflicient to detach and discharge the upper-most sheet. The spring 10 is riveted at 12 to a box-shaped portion 11 which is stamped inward from the back, similarly to the parts 25, so that the rivet heads do not project to the rear of the plane of the back.

a The paper packages usually have a knife or cutting arm extending through the package from the inverted rear pocket and by which the paper sheets are held together and supported in proper correlation. As the pivoted plate 8 moves forward, it is evident that the front end of this knife would have a tendency to strike the lid and, if it did not bend, would stop further feeding action of the plate 8. To overcome this danger of rendering the device inoperative, I provide a deflector 29 upon the inner surface of the lid and in its upper portion so as to be opposite to the arm 13. This deflector is preferably made of sheet metal bent V shaped with the apex directed toward the supporting arm 13 so that the tin blade or knife of the package will'be guided down either inclined wall and be bent out of the way without arresting the action of the spring actuated plate 8 in the performance of its feeding the paper against the roller 7.

The roller.7 is of wood and provided with one or more annular grooves 30. It is provided with a shaft 31 which, at one end is journaled in a bearing 32 on the lid and has its other end guided in a slotted portion 32 in the flange of the lid and furnished with a milled head 35 by which to rotate it. Spring arms 27 are secured at their upper ends to the inside of the lidand have their lower parts curved so as to extend around the roller and in the annular grooves thereof to hold it from falling away from the lid when opened and also to act as guides or strippers for the paper sheets should they adhere to the surface of the roller. These spring arms 27 may be connected by a cross bar 29% to hold them against relative lateral displacement and to enable both arms to be lifted at the same time. By this construction the roller is loosely held in place and may revolve freely and yet it is easily removed by simply drawing it out from under the spring arms '27. As shown these arms practically hold the roller from longitudinal movement and its shaft from disengagement from the bearing 32. The shaft 31 is provided with a ratchet wheel 33 with which engages a pawl 34 to prevent the backward rotation of the roller.

By making the cabinet of stamped sheetmetal great lightness and strength is secured; the finish is such that no extra cost is required beyond the cost of construction; and breakage is practically impossible. By making the back, lid and spring plate hinged on the same axis economy in construction is secured and the relation of these parts is such that the best results are secured. v

By having the means at each side of the cabinet for locking the lid to the case, it is evident that the lid may be of light stamped sheet-metal, as the double locking of it in place (instead of a lock on one side only) would prevent the springing or bending of it, if attempts were made to force it open without unlocking of it.

It is evident that, while I have shown the spring actuated plate 8 as provided with the upwardly extending tongue or arm 13, any other manner of supporting the paper package may be employed.

While I prefer the construction shown as being excellently adapted for the purposes of my invention in commercial use, I do not confine myself to the details as these may be modified in various ways without departing from the spirit of my invention.

Having now described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:

1. In a toilet paper cabinet, the combination of a box-shaped case formed of stamped sheet metal, with a lid hinged to the boxshaped case at its upper and rear part and extending over the key operated top and front thereof and provided with side flanges, movable means independent of the lid at each side of the cabinet at a distance from the hinge for locking the lid to the boxshaped case, means for simultaneously operating both of the locking means, a feeding roller carried by the sheet metal lid, a hinged plate having a support for the paper package hinged to the box-shaped case adjacent to its upper end, and spring devices for pressing the plate toward the roller.

2. In a toilet paper cabinet, the combination of a box-shaped case formed of stamped sheet metal, with a lid hinged to the box- -shaped case at its upper and rear part and extending over the top and front'thereof and provided with side flanges, means ateach side of the cabinet for locking the lid to the box-shaped case, means for simultaneously operating both of the locking means, a feeding roller detachably carried by the sheet metal lid, a spring frame secured to the lid on the inside and having a curved downwardly extending portion for holding the roller to the lid when open and guiding the paper from the roller should it become attached thereto, a hinged plate having a support for the paper package hinged to the box-shaped case adjacent to its upper end, and spring devices for pressing the plate toward the roller.

3. In a toilet paper cabinet, the combination of a box-shaped case formed of stamped sheet metal, with a lid hinged to the box shaped case at its upper and rear part and extending over the top and front thereof and provided with side flanges, means at each side of the cabinet for locking the lid to the box-shaped case, means for simultaneously operating both of the locking means, a feeding roller having a plurality of annular grooves at intervals in its length and carried by the sheet metal lid, a spring frame consisting of a plurality of spring arms secured at their upper parts to the lid and having their lower parts curved around the roller and arranged Within the annular grooves thereof, a hinged plate having a support for the paper package hinged to the box-shaped case adjacent to its upper end, and spring devices for pressing the plate toward the roller.

4;. In a toilet paper cabinet, the combination of a box-shaped case formed of stamped sheet metal having the bottom notched as at 5 and provided with a deflector 6 extending obliquely upward and backward so as to receive and deflect the sheets of paper which are forced downward by the feeding means and by which the paper is guided through the narrow slot formed by the notch 5, with a lid hinged to the box-shaped case at its upper and rear part and extending over the top and front thereof and provided with side flanges, means at each side of the cabinet for locking the lid to the box-shaped case, means for simultaneously operating both of the locking means, a feeding roller having a plurality of annular grooves at intervals in its length and carried by the sheet metal lid, a spring frame consisting of a plurality of spring arms secured at their upper parts to the lid and having their lower parts curved around the roller and arranged within the annular grooves thereof, a cross connection between the flat spring arms whereby both may be raised simultaneously for liberating the roller 5, a hinged plate having a support for the paper package hinged to the box-shaped case adjacent to its upper end, and spring devices for pressing the plate toward the roller. v

5. The combination of a box-shaped case, a lid hinged to it at the top and rear, a discharging roller carried by the lid, a spring actuated pressure plate for pressing the paper toward the roller also hinged to the case at its upward and rear portion, and a common hinged axis for the lid and pressure plate upon the box-shaped case the hinged parts of the pressure plate and the lid being arranged at different places in the width of the case.

6. In atoilet paper cabinet, a box-shaped portion, combined with a stamped sheet metal lid part hinged to the box-shaped portion and having side flanges to fit over the sides of said box-shaped portion, locking arms secured to the sheet metal lid adj acent to each of its sides at a distance from the hinge and adapted to extend down into the box-shaped portion while the lid flanges extend upon the outside thereof, and key operated locking means at each side of the box-shaped case for simultaneously-engaging and disengaging the locking armswithout disturbing the lid.

In a toilet paper cabinet, a box-shaped portion, combined with a stamped sheet metal lid part hinged to the box-shaped portion and having side flanges to fit over the sides of said box-shaped portion, locking arms secured to the sheet metal lid adjacent to each of its sides and adapted to extend down into the box-shaped portion while the lid flanges extend upon the outside thereof, and locking means at each side of the box-shaped case for engaging the looking arms said locking means having a rock shaft shaped at each end to receive a key and by which it may be rocked and looking plates secured to the rock shaft and provided with engaging parts for the locking arms of the lid.

8. In a toilet paper cabinet, the combination of a box-shaped case combined with a lid hinged to the case, a movable plate for supporting the paper package, a spring to press the plate forward toward the lid, discharging means for the paper against which it is pressed by the spring actuated plate, and a deflector arranged in the upper portion of the lid on the inside for deflecting the blade orknife which supports the paper.

9. In a toilet paper cabinet, the combination of a box-shaped case combined with a lid hinged to the case, a movable plate for supporting the paper package, a spring to press the plate forward toward the lid, discharging means for the paper against which it is pressed by the spring actuated plate, and a deflector consisting of a V-shaped guide 29 arranged in the upper portion of the lid on the inside and having its apex directed toward the movable plate for deflecting the blade or knife which supports the paper. I

10. In a toilet paper cabinet, the combination of a box-shaped case, a stamped sheet metal lid hinged thereto and having side flanges extending over the sides of the case,

a transverse reinforcing bar secured to the inner surface of the lid and having inwardly extending arms at its ends parallel to the side flanges and arranged to extend ,to the inside of the sides of the case, and locking means for locking the lid to the box-shaped case.

7 11. In a toilet paper cabinet, the combination of a box-shaped'case, a stamped sheet metal lid hinged thereto and having side flanges extending over the sides of the case, a transverse reinforcing bar secured to the inner surface of the lid and having inwardly extending locking arms at its ends parallel to the side flanges and arranged to extend to the inside of the sides of the case, and lockmg means carried by the case and engag ing the locking arms for locking the lid to the box-shaped case. I

12. In a toilet paper cabinet, the combination'of a box-shaped case, a stamped sheet metal lid hinged thereto and having side flanges extending over the sides of the case,

a transverse reinforcing bar secured to the lnner surface of the lid and having inward extending arms at its ends parallel to the side flanges and arranged to extend to the inside of the sides of the case, locking means for locking the lid to the box-shaped case,

a roller carried by the lid for discharging I the paper sheets, and means carried by the case arranged between the side arms of the lid for pressing the paper package againstthe roller.

13. In a toilet paper cabinet, the combination of a case, a lid for the case, means for supporting and discharging sheets of paper from the cabinet, a transverse rock shaft extending across the case and having locking means at each end for locking the lid to the caseiat'each side.

14. In a toilet paper cabinet, the combination of a case, a lid for the case, means for supporting and discharging sheets of paper from the cabinet, a transverse rock shaft extending across the case and having its ends exposed andinade polygonal shaped to Ireceive a key to rock it, locking means at F each side of the case and lid and operated by the rock shaft for locking the lid to the case at each side.

15. In a toilet paper cabinet, the combination of a case containing means for supporting and discharging sheets of paper, and a stamped sheet metal lid 3 having side flanges 28 and a central front box shaped portion 86 hinged to the case, and a transverse reinforcing bar 38 extending across the lid and secured to it.
